I think we'll see Link's Zelda U design at E3

Because of the skin colour and texture and his face shape. I'm sure the model isn't final and probably won't be used alltogether though.
It dont even look like though -_-;

and whats wrong with the skin color? Its newish looking that he seems tan, even though it could be the lighting in that dungeon cause Ive seen him look whiter.

I'm still hoping Zelda will be the playable character this time around, but I have a feeling Nintendo EAD is too Japanese and sexist.

What? Samus? I said EAD. You'll notice every female main character that comes out of Nintendo EAD is a princess

ocarina of time - sort of a shut-in, but initiates the events to take down ganondorf, and when it unintentionally leads to him gaining power, she helps link from the shadows on his quest. seals ganondorf in the sacred realm.

the wind waker - leader of a band of pirates, and basically gets guilted into letting link come along with her. although she's kept hidden and taken hostage in the final act of the game, she fights alongside link in defeating ganondorf and later founds new hyrule.

twilight princess - ready to fight zant with her men until it's obvious she's incredibly outmatched. sacrifices her kingdom and herself to fight another day, fights alongside link in the final battle.

spirit tracks - so she sorta dies, but then she aids link as a spirit who the player controls in order to solve puzzles and complete dungeons. she fights alongside link in the final battle.

skyward sword - goes on her own quest with impa's help. puts link through several trials in order for him to become the hero he needs to be.

she's had a lot to do in the series already. i'm not saying there shouldn't be a game where there's a female lead, be it zelda or not, but it isn't like she's princess peach. and even with peach, it's sorta part of the joke now that she gets kidnapped every game.

also: 'too japanese?' what.

I actually hope Link's design for the Wii U title is the Skyward Sword one. The hardware just didn't do the art direction justice. Would love to see it get another chance on better tech. Wouldn't mind a return to the Wind Waker world, either.

That, and I don't want to see Zelda go the vaguely "dark" approach again. Twilight Princess was bland as fuck in pretty much every regard. Franchise is at its best when it's colorful (or super weird like Majora's Mask, though I don't expecting anyone attempting or being able to recapture that).

The Japanese thing, I don't know. I get the feeling they think only "young men" can go on adventures. I don't think Miyamoto will ever make a game with a female protagonist

I like the Wii U tech demo's design. I hope they keep it.

The got a backlash on the GC when they showed a realistic link then followed it by a cell shaded game. People grew to like the new style, but it really dampened the enthusiasm for Wind Waker when it was revealed, because people were expecting something but got something else instead.

This is common in Western fiction too. Many young boys fiction deals with adventures in fantasy lands doing grand things, while young girls fiction deals with solving problems in the real world.

Not likely we'll see it at this E3, if only because nintendo doesnt need to show it. Theyve already got a wii u zelda coming out this fall, plus LTTP 2 on 3DS, plus the plethora of other known to be in development titles to show off. I'm not even certain we'll see SSB4 at E3

It will most likely be his Skyward Sword model in SSB4, just like Brawl had the Twilight Princess model even though that was technically a Gamecube title, and Melee had the Ocarina of Time Link even though that was technically an N64 title. There's plenty of potential for moveset expansion in SS Link too, with the whip & beetle.

Smash Bros. games, apart from the first one, have always come out before the console's flagship Zelda.

Is it just me, but i swear they put more effort into the floor than into links character model. His face just looks... odd.

If we do it'll be SB... put me in the "No playable new Zelda this year" camp.

Same for Metroid and Star Fox, both sorely needed

I think they'll keep Wind Waker Link as Toon Link. They are remaking Wind Waker in HD anyway, and Toon Link did have a retro skin in Brawl.

All canon palette swaps.

Brawl's Retro Toon Link is based on the Zelda 1 + 2 Link though. SSB4's retro skin should be closer to ALttP, especially on the wake of ALttP2.

Of course, there are several possibilities we still haven't considered... For example, alternate models for the same character, or even alternate movesets (Sakurai did say he wanted to make the game more customizable). If that's the case, a lot of things could happen with the young version of Link. He could have moves/movesets ranging from ALttP, WW and even MM, and likewise models.

If things are not unlike Brawl though, I hope that at least, the Wario-level of alternate costumes will be there (in other words, not simple colour swaps). It wouldn't be too hard to make Toon Link look very close to ALttP Link if they can pick on the attire and weapons a bit. Give him the ALttP belt, sword, shield and the other details and we have a satisfyingly distinct version of the character.

Here's a question since the topic went from a Wii U tease to straight up Smash Bros talk:

Do you think the Wii U and 3DS will have different art styles for Smash?

I don't think so. Look at Waluigi's Assist Trophy model in Brawl. Even if they go with lower poly models like that one for the actual playable cast, they can still keep Smash's tweaked Nintendo designs.

This one artwork made me so hyped for Skyward Sword at E3 2009, every day I'd look up speculating videos on Youtube about what they think it means and how they want the game to be, and I subscribed to Earthbounding for the latest news.

I don't expect to see Zelda Wii U at E3 2013 AT ALL, but I would love to see an artwork from it.

I could see a single piece of artwork being put out, or maybe even a very limited reveal demo showing 1 trait they want to focus on (Twilight Princess reveal trailer with mounted combat as an example).

But whatever it is they do (if they do it) it'll be small. They're going to be show casing WW HD and LttP2 much more heavily.

Nintendo name dropping The Legend of Zelda for Wii U a few Directs back was nice and all, but I think it's given some people the impression that the game is further along than it most likely is.

It took two years for Nintendo to even mention that a new Wii Zelda was in the works, and not until 2009, three years after Twilight Princess, did they show the Link concept art.

By E3 2013, Skyward Sword will have only been out for about a year and a half. And though I do not doubt there are teams at EAD working on Zelda Wii U, I suspect they're very, very early conceptualisations of the story, art, and game direction. Personnel from the Zelda group have been, and still are, busy with A Link to the Past 2 and Wind Waker HD.

There will be a time when Zelda Wii U is in the spotlight. But I don't believe that will be anytime soon.

EDIT: And Smash Wii U will obviously feature Skyward Sword Link, if the tradition is to be upheld.

There's few things more exciting to me than the announcement (and showing) of a new mainline console Zelda and its style.

I assume we're probably going to have to wait for 1-2 more years for that, though.

Who cares if they show it, no one is going to be paying attention since no one from the mainstream press cares about Nintendo Directs and all Nintendo news will be muted by Sony and Microsoft dropping bombs left and right. Nintendo clearly doesn't have much to show and they wouldn't want to tie Zelda into such a weak showing. The game would just be vaporware, anyway.

Am I doing this right, Sessler?

This.

When I heard the Nintendo Direct mention the game would have a different, multi-player (they mentioned this, right?) feel to it, I think it'd be pretty neat if they created a game where all the past Links come back and you can switch between them with different play-styles.

Maybe not EVERY Link, but the main console Links since they're the most important to the series overall...NES Link, LTTP Link, Ocarina Link, WW Link, Twilight Link, and SS Link. Adventure Link is the NES Link, Awakening and Oracle is the LTTP Link, Majora is the Ocarina Link, Phantom Hourglass is the WW Link, so the only individual Link's left out are the minor Minish Cap and Spirit Tracks Link, which wouldn't be a major admission really. The lesser games could be referenced though, like Majora appearing and such.

So, each Link could be done in the style seen in the Wii U demo reel, but with their designs changed around to give them more of an individual appearance...LTTP Link could have reddish hair, and maybe a bit effeminate as a reference to his old pink hair, Twilight Link could be more rugged and muscular since he's a farmer, etc. And then each Link would have their own play-style, like LTTP Link would focus on magic, since that game had the most magic abilities, using the Medallions and Element Rods, while NES Link would be the master when it comes to using basic weapons, and Wind Waker Link would be very quick and nimble like he was in Wind Waker.

And then you'd either switch between them in single-player, or in co-op, to solve dungeons and fight enemies.

Having ALL conventions dropped would basically remove the series of what separates it from other series. It just wouldn't be Zelda anymore.

Sure it would, it would still be called "Legend of Zelda", hence it would be a Zelda game.

The stale setting, characters, and formula need jettisoned. I would love to see a new type of Link emerge. If the series is supposed to be the same story retold generation by generation as speculated (though the official timeline does kind of refute this), shouldn't the hero change with time?

... which in turn, is based off his Ocarina appearance.

It is based on his Ocarina of Time designs very closely but it is not an exact replica.

Ganondorf has two designs in Ocarina of Time, one in the child era, another in the adult era.

Child era Ganondorf has short hair and a very short tan "cape." Adult era Ganondorf has long hair and a long flowing red cape.

GCN Tech Demo Ganondorf has short hair and a long flowing tan cape. It's an amalgamation of the two designs and looks very similar, but it is different.

Melee Ganondorf has short hair and a long flowing tan cape like the GCN Tech Demo Ganondorf, and he also shares the large sword seen nowhere else. More than anything, Melee Ganondorf is based on the GCN Tech Demo design, not Ocarina of Time.

But this is splitting hairs, really.

Well, yeah, but it would be a Zelda game in name only. If you're going to change the formula to the extent it doesn't look or play like a Zelda game anymore, wouldn't it be better to just create a new IP?
