I think we'll see Link's Zelda U design at E3

Sure it would, it would still be called "Legend of Zelda", hence it would be a Zelda game.

The stale setting, characters, and formula need jettisoned. I would love to see a new type of Link emerge. If the series is supposed to be the same story retold generation by generation as speculated (though the official timeline does kind of refute this), shouldn't the hero change with time?

there could be a Link to the Future but you'd still get some kind of elf boy. you'd still get dungeons. you'd get items to help progress. it'd be the same game basically.

The back and forth between Skyward Sword Link and Wii U Tech Demo Link seems kind of silly to me seeing how close they actually are to each other. Other than the mirroring, they're very similar to one another (the differences are minor, like baggier pants, slightly redesigned chainmail, and the lack of a guard on his sword arm).

Flipped to be left handed to follow his Smash moveset and removed from SS's cartoonish shading and such (which would happen for the character in Smash anyway, see Toon Link) and he'll end up looking pretty darn close to TP/Wii U Tech Demo Link.

EDIT: Concerning left-handed/right-handed, I thought it was neat to note that Sakurai has his Skyward Sword Link figurine posed to be left-handed.

Well, yeah, but it would be a Zelda game in name only. If you're going to change the formula to the extent it doesn't look or play like a Zelda game anymore, wouldn't it be better to just create a new IP?

Nintendo doesn't have the will to create a new major core IP.

If you think all of the Zelda conventions need to be dropped, you pretty obviously don't want ot play Zelda games.

Sure I do. I just want a new Zelda experience, not the same game repeated ad nauseum.

Well that's just stupid.

nuh uh, your face is stupid

They probably have less will to do such massive changes to one of their more popular franchises.

There's no need to drop all conventions to do that, though. Look at Mario Galaxy. Kept pretty much every Mario staple, yet offered an entirely different gameplay experience.

Oh. I thought you wanted to change everything about Zelda, as your original post stated. I didn't realize all that was important to you about the series were the names. I suggest you boot up a miscellaneous RPG and name your hero Link.

Glad I could help. :)

I can see the kind of thing he's talking about... the theme of a young boy in green against a seemingly immense evil is a theme that can be applied to a load of gameplay styles. That said, as per Pokemon, people who say nothing about the games have really changed either has bizarre expectations of the IP or simply hasn't played the games very thoroughly.
