I wish we had a Dark Souls movie...

I think most of what makes it and the other From Software games special would be lost in translation. Maybe Sekiro would work, but Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne… nah.

I can’t see a screenwriter doing it justice and the progression of the film wouldn’t meet the player’s expectations. Best part of the Souls games is discovery and doing things at your own pace. Even if someone is a die hard Souls fan, it doesn’t mean they’re qualified to make a film about it either. Even the best videos on the web aren’t for every Souls fan. I think the popularity of the souls games is also exploiting some of its best qualities just to turn it into pop culture. It’s also the franchise’s poison.

There isn't enough story or characterization to support a movie, so at best what'd result is a series of fight scenes styled and set across an environments reminiscent of the game(s).

Its a truly terrible idea.
They already have comic books for the series and I'm sure they can pull lore from Vaatividya

a dark souls movie with SEAN BEAN would be great

I feel like we need to get on board the mindset of let Videogames be videogames, and not try to cram them into another media. The Sony style of AAA game where you are "playing a movie" is starting to wear thin with me. Dark souls (and the other Fromsoft stuff) is where I think VG direction should go. Don't constrain yourself to some kind of Movie format and set pieces. Movies work in a certain way because all you are doing is sitting and watching. Videogames can give you a lot more emersion and sense of urgency, player agency, etc. that movies can't touch. If you want a VG in a movie format, just watch a let's play or Longplay.

Oh God, no.

No, no, no.

There's zero chance anyone would make a decent Dark Souls movie, because it would have to be fucking depressing, fatalistic, and have a downbeat ending. The entire narrative of Dark Souls is about failure, death, entropy and decay.

They'd just make another bloody Game Of Thrones fantasy thing, and would miss the point of Dark Souls entirely. Chris Pratt as The Chosen Undead, in an epic quest to save Lordran? No fucking thank you.

Never going to happen, nor should it.

Isn’t a lot of the appeal of Dark Souls the environmental storytelling? I guess you can make a movie but I doubt it’d translate well.

Of course there is it’s what you do out of it.There doesn’t even need to be a story it could just be the evil is here we must fight it.From there you have different characters which are funny or sinister it’s like every other movie out there. For example all Arnold Schwarzenegger movies have barley story are very simple and Arnold is not a good actor but still we all love most of his films.Dark souls could be like evil dead films or more into the knights films way

To do it right it would have to be medium budget(nobody is making money on this thing) and gritty as fuck like A Serbian Film type grit.

Making sense of the story enough to make a compelling screenplay is the hard part, since the apologists all LOVE the "lore based" shit spread out over every weapon and bullshit it'd be impossible to make a story that pleases those people.

Elden Ring has a slightly more cohesive tale, it'd be a better candidate for a TV series, again it would have to be super gritty.

You saw what they done to Monster Hunter movie, I'm pretty sure with Dark Soul movie they once again shove US military in the story.

elden ring seems way more likely given it’s massive sales and the fact they could plaster the nams George RR Martin on all the promo stuff

I like Dark Souls lore better tho. Especially the first game.

A series starting with Demon's Souls. A lot of quiet sections can work in film. Look at something like Castaway. I'd watch.

Well, if Sony ever buys From, you'll get it. Sony seems to be making a movie or show for EVERY IP they own, whether it makes sense or not.

I, not jokingly, kind of expect to hear of a Knack show or movie at some point.

Knack would probably work very well as an animated kids show tbh. Could be kinda like Cubix (which was some crap I watched as a kid with a somewhat similar character).

Yeah we’ve only got 30 years of failed game to film conversions but I’m sure this would be the one to break the mold LFG

This is the sort of stuff that would actually be interesting to see adapted. Makes a lot more sense than trying to adapt cinematic games, the entire appeal of cinematic game is that merge the cinematic language with an interactive media, when you then adapt then you create absolutely nothing new.

Adapting something like Dark Souls would actually require translating a lot of things that are unique to video games to a movie/series, that makes it way more interesting than adapting Uncharted/GoT/TLoU/etc.

Edge of Tomorrow, what a great action movie, I'm glad I got to watch it at the theather.

Fuck no. Knowing today's Hollywood they'd find a way to make it like marvel with fucking quips and sarcastic jokes every 2 minutes. And how the fuck would you tell the stories from Dark Souls anyway?

As much as I want them I don't trust these kind of adaptations

Like, World of Warcraft makes God tier cinematics but also still manages to create a movie like Warcraft

You're right, the movie would need to be an A24 film to succeed.

This movie came relatively close to nailing the atmosphere and oddities of what a Dark Souls movie could look like:

The overall story itself was just okay though.

it could work if it was staged like the Dredd movie, where the entire movie is trying to escape or get to the end of a dungeon.

You would have to make the pov character mostly silent and maybe have the fire keeper escort them that fills in the exposition.

I've thought about it and I think a Dark Souls movie could be done very well, and it would be great.

I could film it make it all work myself if I wanted to.

Either this, or actually be bold like The Green Knight and have the protagonist travel alone but only talk to people when he encounters them. Having the protagonist be alone creates a better sense of dread and isolation. I was genuinely worried about Gawain and what he would encounter in that movie the minute he started traveling alone, especially when he had to find somewhere to sleep for the night.

Bruno_Arrais85 Bruno_Arrais85 is right, while it has good individual moments and captures the look and feeling well, the overall main story is just okay. His side quests(if you'd call them that) in the movie are really interesting one-offs that just help capture how odd that world is. It is a visually striking movie.

No please no, die and retry in a movie sounds like pure hell. Wait. That maybe on purpose then ? 😹

By the way, I absolutely love Edge of Tomorrow, this movie is awesome.
