Ice Climber should be rebooted as a F2P vertical endless jumper

Now that Nintendo is making its first steps on the F2P model with Steel Diver and according to Reggie they're expressing interest in reviving old series...

The original concept is pretty close to that when you think about it. Players set out to climb on different stages (mountains) and the game ends when you lose all lives. In a similar fashion, a reboot could be implemented in a way that the mountains are semi-randomized each time -- and the higher you go, the harder it gets. Maybe mountaintop checkpoints could still exist for pseudo-boss fights with Condor, and following mountains would be higher and harder (and possibly with a few new gimmicks).

Microtransactions wouldn't be pay-to-win esque, but new themed stages. An example? A stage based on the G&W game Climber, the obscure Ice Climber spin off/sequel.

Like all Endless Runners/Jumpers, there would be multiple power-ups and characters with different powers; several unlockables as well. Perhaps new characters could also be DLC. I think they could also have some StreetPass implementation; using the coins to unlock stuff and perhaps having some interaction with other Climbers you've met via StreetPass.

There could be more to it, like Endless Mode (the semi-randomized stages I mentioned earlier) versus Time Attack (fixed stages for time battles). Leaderboards are a given too.

What does everyone think? Is this idea a bit too silly? What would you like in an Ice Climber reboot (be it an Endless Jumper or something else entirely)?

Then Kid Icarus would be a more perfect fit?

Wouldn't Mario work as a 2d side scrolling f2p endless runner as well?

I think that Kid Icarus was created as an "action game" though, much like Metroid. In a way, its evolution to Uprising (an action genre gem) sort of makes sense, although its gameplay is very distant from the NES game's gameplay. KI also wasn't completely vertical. Ice Climber on the other hand was at its 100% a vertical platformer with few action elements (mostly to overcome the obstacles). Its core concept was climbing a mountain.

A Mario endless runner could work, but I'm not sure if Nintendo will do that any time soon. I mean, when you see the game they chose as their first F2P, Steel Diver, it becomes obvious they're still experimenting on the field and may not want to use a very popular/safe IP on it. Maybe some day though!

Personally I'd rather see this IP revived in a fresh way and as a full game, like what was done to Kid Icarus.

At first I misread and thought you were asking for a first person vertical endless jumper.
F2P is better, I think, will be interesting to see how Steel Diver does.

I would....actually be ok with this. Huh. The problem I have with the endless runners I've played is that after 2 minutes I've seen every single environment they have to offer. I get that they're supposed to be repetitive but...yeah. A bit much. I trust Nintendo would avoid this.

There are already dozens and dozens of endless runners on ios and android already... I don't see why we would need another one.

I want Nintendo to focus on their retail games, especially now after E3 when we found out that they having big problems with their development in HD.

I think that would work better as like a 5$ E-Shop game or something. I don't think DLC could be incorporated into something like that very well, and that's how F2P games make their money.

Yes, but are current endless runners mediocre because of their genre or because of their design? I'd argue that Nintendo would be able to create something much more fun than Temple Run, and using an old IP that doesn't haven obvious way of making a comeback may be better than creating one people may not care too much about.

Now, I suppose it could indeed be a 5 bucks eShop offer rather than F2P. I just think that since people are used to free when it comes to endless runners, and Nintendo is trying to get into the field and revisit old characters/franchises, this may be their chance.
