I forgot that Kylo Ren's real name is actually Ben and thought that the second theory would somehow connect BB8 to the old EU's Ben Skywalker via incredibly convoluted logic.

Maul is his Sith name I think, so it's probably something else. But yeah, Savage is a pretty bad name. It helps it isn't pronounced the same, but still.
