*IF* Sony charges for online gaming next gen... where do you stand?

I can't remember the last time I played either of my consoles online. Only online gaming I do these days is through Steam.

Depends.

If you pay do you still lose features of the hardware?
If you don't pay, do you get to keep the hw features you paid for?

Wii U, Handhelds and PC land with potentially a ps4 for some singleplayer games on there. Dont really play games that much online though when i think about it, but would suck big time if it was .

I would simply not play multiplayer, or purchase multiplayer-centric titles on their respective platforms. I have not spent a single cent on XBL, despite having owned an Xbox for years. Hell, the reason I haven't co-oped Gears' campaign is because none of my friends want to pay for Live. I would -- without question -- focus on PC gaming whenever appropriate thereafter.
Only if they provide dedicated servers.
They won't; it doesn't work like that.

With the way the PSN is, there's no way in hell I'm paying for it if it doesn't improve on the PS4.

Agreed. There is a noteworthy difference on how fighting games play between Live and PSN... PSN is terrible by comparison. If I were going to pay, it would need to catch up.

Steam only I guess, I voted with my wallet at the beginning of this gen and if they're going to go the pay per month route with PSN like Live then I'll vote with my wallet again.

Never played an online game on PS3 longer than an hour this gen.

Unless MS fucks up their controller/Sony fixes theirs I doubt this will change.

Honestly outside of a few games like Shatter/Joe Danger my ps3 experience would have been BETTER if PSN didn't even exist.

I'd pay for it if there were at least a few games I wanted to play online. Same reasoning why I pay $30/yr for XBL now. :)

But I don't plan on picking up a PS4 until after the first major price cut and hardware revision.

I hardly ever use PSN for actual online gaming.
Probably go free tier.

I do like how they have PSN setup now between regular and plus.
Hopefully they maintain this model.

Will cross that bridge when I come to it.

I will say I haven't played a online ps3 game in months so I guess I could live without it.

But I think they have a good balance now.

Basic online gaming in free, You dont have to pay Sony to access stuff like Netflix. (how MS gets away with this is crazy)

BUT they do have paid extras like Cloud Saves.

They should add to the PS+ offering but they shouldnt take stuff that is currently free and make it paid.

Clan stuff. Maybe have basic 1 to 1 Cross game Chat free but have party Chat be for +.

Bigger Discounts on stuff, Free stuff, Early Releases + Beta access.

Make PS+ a bigger deal. Maybe bundle consoles with 1 month trials to get people in.

Depends on what consoles I have at the time. If PS4 is my only next gen console and there was a game I wanted to play online, I'd probably pay.

Coming from a PS+ user

They would at least need feature parity, like party chat, an interface that isn't super sluggish (that's probably more due to how PS3 was never even intended to have in-game XMB), a better designed store, etc.

But still I would find it tough to pay for online anything.

Either I'm part of the solution or the problem. I think I'll go with not paying for / not using it if they charge.

It's easy for me to say though. I'm more of a Nintendo fan, and (possibly as a result) not big on online. I'd barely bat an eye if online multiplayer didn't exist at all. Still, really a pain on that occasion when a game doesn't support lan, and I can't play with my friends because I refuse to pay for Gold.

Depends on whether or not they include Netflix. I have more of an issue with that than I do with playing online really, though it helps I don't play online much.

I would say majority of my online gaming takes place on the PC. I currently pay for XBL because it is the system I play most of my fighting games on . If PSN is a pay-service I would very likely only pay for a single month for each time I purchase a multiplayer-centric PS exclusive. Since Demon Souls is no longer exclusive, I would be hard pressed to consider it.

As always, first reply nails it. 3 years ago if you told me I would be consoleless I would have thought you were crazy. Now I am in the position where the new consoles will have to completely wow me or I will withhold buying a console until I have children old enough to play games.

I would get the next Playstation console due to the single player games that will be coming out, but I will never pay to play online.

Agreed. Once my Live expires that will be it. No XBL or PSN accounts for me if I have to pay to play. It is not necessary and I have a PC with steam.

what the fuck is this?

And no, I wouldn't pay. This combined with the online pass nonsense, I'd pick up a system 3 years later for single player games.

Think of all the COD clones I'd be missing...

I fully expect them to try because they know gamers are the worst consumers in the world.

If there's a game worth playing online then I'll pay to play. However, I haven't played any PS3 game's online multiplayer.

If it's what it is now (in that it's a little slow and doesn't integrate features correctly) then I will be angry... but i will pay for it if I want to play online with friends :( same as Live.

PSN+ in line with what is currently being offered = Yes.
Online package similar to XBL = No.
It is only about the co-op for us and never competitive with no incentive thus far to validate online specific fees for any console.

I don't have a Gold XBL account because I don't want to pay money for something I never use. Same for PSN+.

So if all of PSN's main features end up requiring money, I won't be using it. :D
