(If you are) Why are you getting a PS4?

Here we go:
- Enjoyed Sony FP this gen;
- lots of indies available at launch;
- I have a PSP and Vita and crossbuys give me some extra play time on-the-go;
- PS+ gives me games for PS3/PS4/PSP/Vita;
- Naughty Dogs;
- All of my friends are going PS, i can play with them on my console of choice.

I love Sony's first party games and am firmly entrenched in their PSN.

3 reasons:

-PS2

And this. Sony hasn't let me down yet while the other two have spotty records.

I am still undecided

but these are the points swaying me to buy a PS4

  1. Remote play - I used it a lot, and PS4/Vita >>> PS3/PSP
  2. superior 3rd party games - this gen I have played way more 3rd party games and I was discussed by rubbish PS3 ports like fallout 3, rdr etc
  3. exclusive game support - i preferred sony exclusives this gen, and i'am unsure if MS will maintain its level of support for hardcore exclusives.

I prefer exclusives
Better hardware
Probably better multi-platforms
Better incentives for paying a subscription
I prefer the controller
Remote play with a Vita
No bundled peripherals I have no interest in
that jack up the price
It's cheaper

great graphics at 400
sony exclusives
ps plus
blu ray player
im hoping for move controller support in the future

I played a TON more on my PS3 than my 360 this gen. I enjoyed PS exclusives way more than I did the 360 ones and I know it will be the same this coming gen. I also have a PS Vita so I am excited to see what I can do between the two. Having PS+ transfer over is going to be awesome too.

Edit: And all of my friends are going to PS4 now so that's awesome.

1st party games - Rime etc.
better price
better hardware
japanese games ( + the online japanese games are miles more healthier on PS platforms )
PS+ & theres no paywall
MMO/FTP games/ cross play games with PC/vita
games will look better on PS4

Sony have historically delivered what I want from games and a games console.

Other companies have not.

So it makes it an easy choice.

I'm a PC gamer, always have been. But I get the consoles cause I want the ability to play the exclusives, like many of you in here. The difference this time is I'm getting it day one instead of a few years. And the reason for that is I make so much more money these days, xD

Japanese Games
Most of the features I would use aren't behind a paywall (I rarely play online w/ consoles)
PS+ (If I did decide to get it, it appears to be a very good value)
New Hardware (PS3 is getting old)
General Playstation Philosophy

Because Sony spend their money on the development of many exclusive games in a wide variety of genres.

MS use their money to deny gamers access to 3rd party games. Also Im not a fan of Gears, Halo, Fable or Forza which are pretty much the only exclusives that MS have

I've always liked Sony's exclusive titles more than what MS has put out. There are a lot of other reasons to list (better hardware, price, late generation support, etc) but, it boils down to the fact that I like the existing exclusives better on the PlayStation brand. Titanfall looks great but, I'd rather play it on PC (to answer have you seen Titanfall).

So why are you picking up Sony's next console?

Two caveats:

1. Don't mention price.
2. Don't mention negatives about any other platform.

Just give me the positives of the PS4.

Full disclosure: I am getting an Xbox One day 1 and have no interest in the PS4 but want to hear the positives about it from those who are getting it.
But price is one of the reasons. Also, the ps4 library interests me more and Sony has a way better first party portfolio than ms. PS3 vs 360 in 2013 completely sums up the argument. In fact, the superiority of the PlayStation ecosystem is so blatant to me, that I seriously question the real motives of anyone that says otherwise. Yes, I believe there are people who are paid by Microsoft to go on to gaming forums and create artificial hype for their platforms. Not accusing tc, its just so often the only thing that makes sense to me.

I can understand that, as I loved the first Crackdown... but is hope and month-early access to DLC of mediocre value really going to sell you a decidedly inferior system? As someone whose only current gen system has been a 360 for seven years (edit: Wii not counting), I don't see how an extra hundred dollars will net you any benefit from a company that quite literally believed that gamers weren't as important as consumers of other media.

I'd venture to guess that you know this on the inside and posted this topic because you want to justify buying a system to play with some of your friends in one game. That's an understandable and legitimate reason to make the choice you might end up making, but it is definitely questionable. I hope this topic has helped you make a well informed decision.

You're way off the mark. I actually think that MS are a bunch of cowards for backing off everything they did. They should have thrown the disc drive out and lowered the price. Digital downloads and virtual sharing sounded great.

MS is doing the smart thing by trying to widen the audience. The Wii (which I also owned and sold) did it and they got to over 100M sold. I believe MS will do it with the One.

.

The main reason is because I love Sony's first party studios. And, whilst not being a fanboy, I grew up with PlayStation and have a favoritism towards them.

Already paid for it months ago

I am tired of this gen, only 1 game remains

been on it since 06 day 1 599.99

incredibly that beast OG is still here

waiting to eat GTA V after digesting TLOU

Based on Sony's video game console track record, I think the PS4 will have a steady release of 3rd party and 1st party games right through to the end of the console's life cycle. It may not have great launch titles but I got it for the long run.

I might be kicking myself for getting it on launch day when there are only a few games out but I know I would be getting it anyway.

I am buying a Ps4 because in the last three generations, even if it took some time to get there.. Sony delivered a very strong console gaming experience. So, it's an informed decision based on what previous history would have me believe.

This doesn't mean that it's guaranteed that Ps4 will have a lot of really cool games, but it does increase those odds significantly.

Infamous: SS
Killzone: Shadowfall
Resogun
Rime
Shadow of the Beast
The Order: 1886

I'll pick a PS4 up some time early next year after Infamous is out. I already have PS+ so I'll have a modest library of games to play with it and Killzone:SF out of the gate, and at that point The Order is likely only a few months off.

I see no point buying one at launch though. I have a ton of current gen PS3 titles, more coming all the time with PS+, and I'm finally going to replace my long in the tooth gaming rig with some new hotness this winter/spring.

That, and I'm putting together a retro console lounge in my basement with an HD Sony Trinitron Wega, Xbox, Wii, PS2, and turning my old gaming rig into a HTPC exclusively focused on controller compatible titles and old school emulators (the ones not already covered by the Wii, which is where I'll play most of my Nintendo franchises).

You're way off the mark. I actually think that MS are a bunch of cowards for backing off everything they did. They should have thrown the disc drive out and lowered the price. Digital downloads and virtual sharing sounded great.

Not discussing the DRM aspects, which everyone has elaborated on: It sounds great until you realize that you will be forced to install your games onto a non detachable hard drive for the same price that you'd get a full fledged disc for. It was actually a means of jipping you of free memory. MS would profit off of selling more memory drives and keep selling install games for the same price as disc-based games. (Do you see the prices on current HDs? You'd be more conscious of that if the XBone kept up its policies.)

MS is doing the smart thing by trying to widen the audience. The Wii (which I also owned and sold) did it and they got to over 100M sold. I believe MS will do it with the One.

"The audience" that you speak of games on smartphones and not consoles. That same "audience" also sees no reason to buy current consoles due to their high prices and minimal upgrades (particularly in the XBone's case). The Wii is a special case because it did something that was visibly revolutionary at its time. MS' policies were / are actually not as smart as you'd think.

I spent more time gaming on my PS2 than I did on my Xbox.
I spent more time gaming on my PS3 than I did on my 360.

I plan on buying one as close to launch as I possibly can. I will get an Xbone after a price drop or two.

System Longevity

Sony support their consoles to a great length. Even the Vita, which has struggled in its market to put it politely, is still getting consistent support. They don't suddenly ditch their consoles when making the transition to next gen like some companies are known too, and even in it's seventh year, the PS3 is still getting terrific looking games.

First-party Studios

I like weird games, and I like variety. With this in mind, I feel Sony cater to my tastes the most, as they splash out cash on risky and offbeat projects more than any other publisher. They don't rely solely on a singular franchise, so I can't accuse them of constantly milking an IP (which is something I personally cannot stand), but rather there's a breadth to their catalogue of releases. We're not really seeing that so much at the start of the PS4's life cycle as we are the end of the PS3s, at least not with the bigger titles, but it'll happen. They're willing to fund and put a hefty budget behind unconventional ventures like Quantic Dream's interactive dramas, Team ICO's minimalist approach to story-driven gaming and MediaMolecule's eccentric brand of platformers, and I'm greatly appreciative for it.

Oh, and they've got Naughty Dog - the greatest video game developer there is.

PS4 Exclusives

inFamous: Second Son, Rime, Killzone: Shadow Fall and The Order: 1886 are all games I really want to play.

The Dual Shock 4

My hands will rest on that thing as snug as a bug on a rug. Look at it, it's perfection in the form of a controller.

The Hardware

It's the most powerful next-gen console, at an affordable price, and there're no tacky, unwanted add-ons you're forced to shell out extra cash for.

The Message

They haven't put a foot wrong. Like House said at Gamescom, Sony have been consistent in presenting their message towards consumers. The most anti-consumer policy they've enforced is that multiplayer is now behind a paywall, but seeing as how I have PS+ already and its a brilliant service, that's not much of an issue at all. Everything else has stayed the same or is being made better.

Remote Play

I'm honestly not too interested in this, but I have a Vita so... it's a bonus I guess!

History

If the past has taught me anything, it's that the Playstation is generally the way to go. Loved Sega, but obviously they aren't in the hardware race anymore. Microsoft started well, but they didn't deliver with the 360 in my opinion, and they've totally lost any good will I had for them with the Xbone fiasco, and Nintendo... well, they just haven't done anything for me in years. They're far too safe and conservative these days, both with firsty-party output and cheap, underpowered hardware. Sony have been consistent though. Out of the big three, the PS3 is the best console I've owned this gen, easily, and the PS1 remains my favourite console of all time. PS2 was outshone by the Dreamcast imo, but hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Based purely on preferences built from years of playing games and buying consoles, I know which company my best bet is when it comes to delivering the gaming goods.

KZ:sF
Infamous: SS
RIME
Naughty Dog
PS plus ( who knows what SONY will give us)
Remote play with my Vita/ cross buy if that does return

Also have a very high interest in The order 1866 ( the art work is incredible, love the setting) and interested in Driveclub ( PS edition first, if good then the actual game)

and it's more powerful and cheaper than the competiton, which helps.

  • Vastly prefer Sony's track record for the last few years.
  • Sony is "hungry", which means eager to please. This is reflected in their direction and policies which are more aligned with me as a person buying a gaming console.
  • Hardware that keeps sounding better and better and games that are definitely looking more and more impressive, from both graphics and gameplay perspectives
  • Liking their exclusives more even if they aren't at launch (KZ is looking good but doesn't sell me, while Infamous SS is a must for instance), but want to play multi-plats at launch, so it makes sense to get the PS4 "early" than another console at launch only to have to buy a PS4 anyway a couple months down the line.
  • Love the indie love
  • If I really want to play Titanfall (which is the only launch "exclusive" on XO I'm really interested in), it's on PC.

Maybe the OP is saying that price doesn't matter to him, so he doesn't want people to use it in their arguments. This thread is more specific to the OP rather than a general discussion about the next gen. I'm in the same boat and was interested to see what people were going to say here, but it didn't turn out to be that much of a help. I'm actually not very interested in the Sony first party games. I know most people aren't like this, but it is my opinion after all. I would actually like to hear what you are specifically referencing about the Playstation ecosystem. Since I was a primarily 360 gamer this generation, I was just going to stick with Microsoft. I'm not against considering the major positives Sony is putting forth this generation, though. This is another reason I also don't want to hear about the negatives of the other systems, just the positives here.

I'm buying a PS4 because I buy everything that comes out on day 1 like a god damn idiot.

This is why I bought a WiiU. And to contradict what I said above, if I can afford it, I will buy both new consoles on Day 1. I just want to feel better about my purchases!

I've always been a Sony fan since the PS1 but really thought MS had the upper hand over the PS3 this gen. The deciding factor was all my friends going to XBL and didn't want to play by myself. Now, I'm going to side with Sony the next gen because I think I'll enjoy the console more than I would the XBO, although a year or so after XBO comes out when they start offering incentives to increase sales again I'll surely pick it up, if only for Dead Rising 3 =x

I love Sony's first party games and am firmly entrenched in their PSN.

And this. Sony hasn't let me down yet while the other two have spotty records.
Well, I vowed never to get another Sony product because of the YLOD.

I then proceeded to get a Slim and now a PS4.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Because I feel the most optimistic about the PS4. The hardware is superior and simple to design for, and the company seems to make the best effort in providing a diverse lineup of games to its systems that gamers want to play. Just look at what the PS3 has enjoyed the past couple of years and what is still to come, vs. what it's competitors have brought their customers. I trust the PS4 will also go that distance.

My main reasons are:

Promise of better hardware
First party exclusives
More functionality available w/o having to pay a service fee

I also guess it will "win" the generation and therefore have all the benefits that come with that (more likely to get the best games, be catered to, be more attractive to publishers, have a larger community, etc.).

Still going to buy an XBO, just not this year. Too many other things I want to spend money on that are higher priority to me.

Because I'm more of a Sony's games than MS's.

Since both consoles are mainly going to have the same games, it comes down to first party developers, Sony has Naughty Dog and MS doesn't, that makes my decision right there.

  1. More powerful hardware.
  2. Better first/second party games.
  3. Long term commitment to first/second party games development.
  4. Apps and other multimedia features not behind a paywall.
  5. Best version of multiplatform games (due to first point).
  6. Very clear messaging.

- Sony studios cater to my taste.

- PS legacy, old games streaming.

- I like how Sony gives more freedom for devs to create games. If a dev is talented you see the results, Naughty Dog, That Game Company, ect.

- Video services not behind paywall. Will be huge as I don't watch TV.

- PS+ is awesome

- Most powerful hardware, last, but is important. No more bullshit from 3rd parties to make PS4 games perform worse. And their games are pivotal to overall success of the platform.

maybe d1 because my sister wants fifa 14, i'll surely need a ps4 in the future anyway, and this time i'll make her pay half or at least 1/3 of the price.

- The XBO launch line-up does nothing for me.
- Knack & Killzone look amazing.
- I already own a PS Vita.
- A camera is not a required accessory, that said, I'll probably buy a PS4 Eye as it's only $60.
- I really can't wait for inFamous Second Son
- I'm tired of third party services (i.e. Netflix) being behind a "pay wall"

I might pick up an XBO for holiday 2014. But I have no desire to own one any time sooner than that.

Because I'm an idiot who cant stop himself from buying new things.

I love blu rays, and netflix, ps3 is still the best blu ray player you can get im pretty sure (as far as keeping updated with playing blu rays). And of course I will find games to play, killzone, knack, MAYBE a warhawk someday :(

- Pricing
I have a budget I'm gonna keep myself too, and that budget was 400 euro's max for a console. Considering the Xbox One was much higher, I ain't gonna buy that and the PS4 is exactly 400.

- System specs
Every developer you hear speaking about the next gen systems are really exciting about the PS4 and it's capabilities. Heck, even at Gamescom developers are mentioning that multiplatform titles look / run better on PS4.

- Games
I love indie games, and the exclusives Sony has are my type of games.

- Fanboy
I'll admit, I'm a much bigger fan of Sony than I am of Microsoft. My first current gen console was a Xbox 360, but the fact I had to pay 50 euro's a year to play online was annoying. And when I got my PS3 it was free. Now, with mutliplayer becoming P2P on PS4, I can live with it considering they're coming it with the main aspects of PS+.

- First
And It'll also be my first console I'll buy at launch. I just wanna be there when everything's still new, and I can brag to my friends how awesome I am.
