If you had superpowers would you hide them from the public?

Yes, I would hide them so I can troll on people. But when it comes to dangerous situations (like alien invasions or a zombie apocalypse) where the army cannot handle, I'll reveal my powers.

Like what would you do to people who don't follow your rules? Kill them? Then people will fear you and slowly they'll revolt against you even if they can't win. As that spreads and you continue to systematically execute those who go against you the world economy grinds to a halt and thus a dystopic future full of scared people hiding from you.

what problems? and what hate? would i have these kinds of problems when the world is at my tip of my thumb? why would the rest of the world turn against me when i am trying to help them? help them to have a better and a fairer chance of life, end all violence and wars. build third world countries...etc
 
It depends how good my powers are. If I was Superman and kryptonite did not exist, I'd probably just be content with being the Ruler of Australia.
 
Depends entirely of what powers, and how strong they are.

If I was strong enough that there was basically no conceivable way for anyone to kill me, then I wouldn't really care about trying to hide myself from the public.
 
Resounding yes - i might get like kidnapped and blood taken away for cloning.

But yea i'd still use my powers for good and keep it hidden... and for profit if it's like clairvoyance.
 
I'd keep it a secret. Even if I was extremely powerful with superman like powers my wife and kids wouldn't be and I'd be worried for their safety.
 
Depends on the power. If I had the power to fuck the world up then no. Why hide? They can't fuck with me. If they try,I will force motherfuckers into submission. YASSSS!!!!!

Easy, discreetly cure people in hospitals in disguise so I don't get caught. Even with such powers, helping everyone is impossible. My life would turn into utter crap if people ever found out, because there would be masses and masses of people claiming for assistance and there would be another group yelling at me because I didn't save their loved ones in time. So I would just do as much as I could without standing out.

This applies to any powers that allow you to save people or stop criminals. You'd be harassed to no end if you were found out.

  • What problems? Not everyone following your doctrine.
  • What hate? Your frustration will turn to hate for those not following your doctrine.
  • Would you have those kind of problems? Yes, it's crazy to think you wouldn't. Humans aren't a hivemind.
  • Why would the rest of the world turn against you? Because humans don't trust one person with complete power; and you still haven't explained what you would do to those who go against you (because people will).

Regardless of what you do, you are going to have people who are against you. That's human tendency at work; and by proxy you will get frustrated. From your point of view you're making the world a better place; but from their POV you're a controlling dictator even if you have nothing but good intentions.
 
If I could freeze time, I'd keep that to my self. If I could do anything more badass and had security from the worlds governments, I'd go public all the way.

You wake up and your entire city has been evacuated, and every nato country has forwarded ressources for your capture. You surrounded by thousands of heavily armored troups. Drones flying everywhere, choppers with rockets, tanks, battleships, artillery. The nato forces are even ready to go nuclear on you.

They have captured your family and loved ones, as a 'safety' procedure.

You've never done anything wrong. They just want to examine you, to figure out how you work. You know this means they will probably kill you/ disable you

Do you unleash total hell on the world?

Hundreds of thousands of troops will die, the fallout from the fight against the nato force will cause an incredible amount of damage around the world and to the planet itself. Countries will turn against each other and it will lead to a total war. Your family will probably not survive.

Do you bolt out in a giant flash of light and never return to Earth? You will leave your family behind. You cannot even return to Earth on the down low, the gov has a way to detect you and this is how they figured it out and found you in the first place. Your family and friends will be safe but will never get to talk to them.

Let's watch and test the limits of global cooperation in the face of the Superman.
 
I would play professional baseball and secretly revel in brawls every time the bench clears. Maybe some day I'll be called upon for a higher purpose..
 
I could never reveal myself to the public. Even if i wanted to save lives. Theres far too much at risk and people are going to feel entitled to your help.
 
Nope. Masks and gloves any time the powers are used. No stupid costume, though. Tacky, lame, and I don't want to be anything in the public eye.
 
Of course I would try to maintain a certain sense obscurity. If I was essentially Superman, then I would reveal my identity and completely stay out of politics. I would join the red cross or other similar organization and travel from one humanitarian crisis to another in order to help people out especially during natural disasters.

If you are not the kind of person who enjoys torturing animals why would you not apply the same standard to sentient beings in these hypothetical scenarios? Just walk or fly away if troops surround you.

You could lead by example, save captives from ruthless organizations and co-operate with army intelligence to prevent various accidents (or minimize the damage).

Jor-El: You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Or you could just steal unlimited amounts of alcohol from convenience stores, hit the bottle and just smash yourself to various planets and completely lose your sanity
 
Definitely would hide it, even from my family. I've got no intention of starting a war against humanity, but at the same time, I want to be free, not locked up as some science experiment.

If I had the power to cure disease as the second hypothetical, then I'd do what another poster suggested, and visit hospitals myself to cure people. Considering I'm studying to work in a hospital, this would be even easier for me.

And in the last hypothetical, I'd leave Earth forever, if it would make my family safe. I'd find another planet to live.
 
Depends on the powers.

If we're talking low level shit then for sure I'd hide them. No sense making myself a target.

High level shit? I might go full supervillain.

It almost certainly wouldn't be that simple. It would make the world dependant on me and it would harm medical science and chances there would be some unforseen outcomes.

Also, you would probably get fucked by the CIA, FDA or whoever got their hands on you first.

Best not to risk it.
 
That depends, getting kidnapped and dissected might be an interesting experience. Actually no, I'm pretty sure that would be horrible.
 
If I were powerful enough, I would become an absolute power. If I was still fairly easily killed, like not bullet proof, I would definitely hide my power.
 
Definitely hide it, A.) so I don't get persecuted like the xmen; and B.) so I can troll people.

With great power comes great potential for trolling.
 
Depends on the powers really.
I'd become a conqueror possibly, if the powers would suit that. Not too much (i wouldn't try for the US or Russia or China, etc. big ones). Or i'd go mercenary.
Or perhaps i'd stick to studying my powers, possibly with scientists. Might offer insight to things and allow for new things.

In any case i wouldn't use some stupid costume.
 
I would go Private Super Hero(PSH) you got the cash, I'll fight your war. One side hires me and then in the middle the other side offers more money, jump ship.
