IGN: Beyond Two Souls is unfocused, controls are a mess, "unplayable"

Did they REALLY turn it into a military shooter, or does it just take place in the middle east at one point? The latter's arguably bad enough ANYWAY, but the former would truly seem like losing their minds/succumbing to the very worst of focus testing and chasing big sales.

I've been kinda interested in it, but for all of David Cage's narrative ambitions something like Heavy Rain just came off as one of the worst executed I've seen. Though this seems to actually go for native English speaking actors, which helps plenty.

Can't say I'm surprised after Heavy Rain. I appreciate that there developers like this who want to try different things and evolve story telling in video games, but I don't think they hit the right balance.

It did. Was more like tank controls than driving controls though. And yeah, you got used to it pretty fast, I never had any real issues playing that game.

Haha it's funny you mentioned this, I remember playing heavy rain thinking to myself "man if REmake would control like this it wouldn't be so bad"

I played it at E3 and had little to no issues.

First of all, you no longer have to press R2 to walk. You simple use the left stick like every other game. That being said, control is a bit loose. Nothing game breaking at all, but notable.

Otherwise they included a new approach to QTEs that I think is fantastic. The game will slow down for action moments and you need to follow through the movement on the left stick. No button prompts.

Otherwise it plays almost exactly like Heavy Rain.

And I can tell you with no uncertainty that they aren't going for the CoD crowd with this game. And if they are, then they are seriously over estimating

Wow, I've never thought the controls would be bad for this game. Only thought it would be a very very short game to play honestly. Looked good from what I saw.

Agreed about the spoiler stuff but I need to hear more impressions about the controls. If it's as good as heavy rains controls then I'll manage.

They think the acting is great, but the story is all over the place, the controls are "a mess" and they also think Sony are spoiling too much of the story. They think and hope the controls will be improved in time for the release. One of them says it's even "unplayable" to him right now because of the controls.

In a QD game? You don't say.

Heavy Rain is one of my favorite games. That being said, I played Beyond at E3, and was SUPER disappointed. A lot of "Press forward while stuff happens" which I had no context for, and a lot of "Press the analog stick correct direction or you lose". It really was no fun at all for a demo. I'm hoping the final product will be a more complete package, but my hype definitely dropped.

Right so 2 people in this thread have said they played the E3 demo and had no problem with the controls.

Definitely putting it down to IGN being IGN

Watching that 20 min (was it more?) Tribecca demonstration made the game look a lot more than whatever people are worried about right now. It looked amazing.

I never played Heavy Rain but didn't people say it was pretty much like playing a movie?

Hopefully they improve it though by the time the game releases.

Game play is shit on Heavy Rain, if you can even call it "game play" which is being rather generous.

Good to hear. Thanks for the impressions!

Well yeah, R2 + analog stick is better than just having tank controls on the stick itself. Of course, the best is direct control (the character goes in the direction you push the stick), which Beyond has unless I'm mistaken.

They didn't understand the story? Wow... I haven't play any of it and I can figure it out:

* Girl with supernatural power
* Government try to take advantage of her
* She make some military missions
* Maybe she does something real wrong because of that
* She return, she's depressed and try to stay low
* Government continue looking for her

I can bet it's something like that...

As sad as it is to hear this, I can't imagine this game demos very well in terms of story. Hope the controls get tweaked in time for release though.

The controls are so much better than Heavy Rain as is. They completely dropped the "tank" controls. So I'm not sure what this guy is talking about.

There's a lot going on in this game. The military part is just supposed to be one scene in the main character's life.

Sadly, I'm not surprised considering that dude would rather be making movies. Also, Heavy Rain gave me no hopes for this being good.

So would the guy who said the controls were bad, by the looks of it. Prior to working at IGN apparently:

"Andrew Goldfarb is the most recent member of the Podcast Beyond Crew. Before working at IGN he worked as a background actor in films such as Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes, Gossip Girl, Damages, and Law and Order. "

IGN. You gotta take what they say with a grain of salt.

I've had my doubts about this game from the start. I was hyped for Heavy Rain ever since The Casting demo and I enjoyed it despite all of its flaws. But after seeing all the released footage of Beyond, it has yet to grab me like Heavy Rain did.

I still have it pre-ordered, though, and I am hoping for the best.

Disjointed story I expected, but how do you mess up the controls in a QTE-based adventure game? Unless i'm mistaken about the game's genre...

How can they say the story is unfocused this early? Don't get me wrong, I think that could totally end up being the case, but it seems too soon to make that call. It sounds more like the story's just not what they expected it to be.

I'm still excited for it, but I gotta say the Somalia level looked really shitty. Hopefully the game has much more interesting environments and story details. The teasers that were out before their E3 announcements made the game look really interesting and since I'm a fan of Heavy Rain I was looking forward to this quite a lot.

I see like everyone automatically believing these lies and saying "I'm not surprised". The same people who were never getting this game period. This game will slay
