IGN First: No Man's Sky 21 Minute Gameplay Demo

There was an icon for your ship in the latest vid but it only pops up at a certain distance. Chances are it's something you can upgrade too and so see where your ship is from further away.

So, they're basically saying that hypothetically I could fill up every slot in my suit with enhancements and therefore have zero space for materials?

I would guess some of the enhancements will be ones that increase the capacity to hold certain material. You can also purchase new suits/ship which will have more inventory slots, and possibly preset enhancements.

Nothing new as far as I know. Just showing off some stuff.

Those huge time skips :(

I get it, but the in between moments will be the essence of NMS. I really wanted to see the journey to that planet and a look at the day/night cycle in action.

Yes but people like the idea of leaving a mark on a planet, like carving a hole in the geography or destroying some buildings or killing some animals and cutting down some trees, and seeing all that refresh after you go to orbit and come back in is kind of disheartening.
From what I understand Sean Murray has stated that whatever small changes a player has made is saved locally to that player, therefore when you return to that planet whatever you've done will remain for you, just not for anyone else.

In the video when Sean flies into space it says "Warning - Sentinel Interceptors". Does that mean the Sentinels are going to be chasing you down into space? He only had a wanted level 1. Or does that mean those little flying drones are Sentinel Interceptors? I think someone mentioned earlier that Sean said the aggressiveness of the Sentinels were exaggerated? Would be kind of over the top if you did an "insignificant" action (like Sean says previously) and then are immediately hunted down through the heavens for gathering crystals.

Also I'm super hyped for this! Around the 2:50 mark in the video they're flying past the planet and as they go by an indicator pops up telling them the time it would take to reach the planet at current speed (ala elite dangerous I think?). For me a little detail like that is so cool and it helps to show the vastness of space. I know others are getting hung up on some visual issues of the game but personally it doesn't seem to matter to me as long as they are nailing the feeling of being a part of these vasts worlds and systems. However I do want to be able to increase the "generation" distance on PC if that is possible.

Good question about the sentinels. I personally don't know. The more I think about it the more I believe I don't need that type of feature. Such as "cops" chasing you. I don't know, wouldn't it be very boring and irritating to be gathering elements only to be met with sentinels left and right? Having to be on the run all the time, restricting your amount of time allowed to explore a planet. I just want to explore without having to worry about cops after me and especially when I have a "5 star wanted level". It could get old really fast. Not every game needs cops to be chasing you around, NMS isn't one of them.

I've seen some videos and they seemingly appear out of nowhere. They literally teleport right in front of you.

You can also bring gadgets which summon your ship remotely, etc. Must take a lot of resources though

I'm always left wanting more after watching these videos. Would really love to sit and watch Sean do a 2 hour long play session and just go nuts.

I think the Sentinels or something like them had to be on the planets though. Otherwise people are going to get bored of walking around farming stuff. I might have preferred more complex and dangerous ecosystems, like giant sand worms, creatures that hunt in packs, etc. to keep that sense of threat constant on planets. (I know there are dangerous animals and plants, but they seem to be the exception rather than the norm)

The Sentinels have a narrative reason for being on the planets though, and I'm interested to find out more about the advanced race that left them everywhere.

Confirms that Sentinels aggro on resource gathering.

Sean has mentioned that the Sentinels are there to keep the planets in balance, and will take notice if you take too much of a world's resources. So those red plutonium crystals there are everywhere, you can take quite a few before the Sentinels get upset, whereas if you take a green crystal and there's only 4 more on the planet, you might get a swifter response.

it wouldnt be much of a survival game if you could go and gather infinite resources/upgrades with little to no pushback.

Ughh the whole sentinel systems seems so forced and super annoying. It's not like he even went on a rampage there. He was just gathering resources and they appear out of nowhere.

Sentinels have been beefed up for demo purposes. Sean has confirmed that their response won't be so easily triggered and that they will not be omniscient and omnipresent in the final build.

From the looks of it, the tools didn't need a high amount of resources. So you need something to balance out resource gathering, and I'd prefer something stopping me from gathering a small amount of resources I need than having to gather a huge amount of resources to get off a planet.

Now I want an Undead Nightmare style update down the line which is licensed with Marvel

PS dat Tom Waits avvy

I always wondered can you land on a different landing marks on a single planet?Or it is only one spot ?

The only place you might not be able to land would be underwater. There might be a ship upgrade for that - but you'd need a suit upgrade, too.

Not specifically IGN First, but this is a No Man's Sky thread for now, and there's a new video out by PlayStation and it shows some new stuff. It's starting on the ice planet we've seen at the beginning of this IGN First 2nd round, but there's a deviation in what is being shown, since Anthony Carboni takes the controller and goes wild

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqmJ8k9uBB0

  • Shows naming discoveries
  • Running on PS4, as shown by the PS4's keyboard prompt from above (confirms it's 60fps on PS4 then)
  • There's melee (with the multi-tool)

Nice. I was really hoping for 60fps with this game.

Will watch now.

I hope the naming of our discoveries will be handled well , because , well on the internet it can go wrong very fast.

But that Aside "JETPACKS"

Jetpacks are cool , As if i didn't want to play this game already

The footage isn't 60fps though. YouTube says it's been encoded at 60, but compare it to the previous IGN footage and a ton of smoothness has been lost.

I'm not sure if the Playstation channel typically posts videos at native 60FPS though.

This is probably the best video so far.

It also shows:

1. Blowing holes in the ground everywhere, including in stalactite structures inside the cave. You could conceivably write your name in the ground or on the side of large hills.

2. Ragdoll/Physics force-effects with creatures really close to the "land excavating bomb" explosions. They get blown off the ground and land like limp ragdolls, rolling down a hillside or hitting a tree. Pretty impressive considering the number of different creature types in the game and all the 'wireframe' variations.

Not feeling it. Game mechanics or, you know, the core isn't great. Combat looks dire and the whole "wanted levels anywhere" sounds like terrible design 101. So in order to survive you need to mine ressources, but if you do you automatically (and magically) spawn Sentinels. How dumb is that? Then the host goes on to say this is about survival, but I haven't seen even one monster that was agressive, they all seem neutral. I know they are there somewhere (like poison plants), just feel like the game isn't about survival as much as it is about exploration.

One thing that bothers me a lot is how little gameplay there is. So you move around, collect ressources, fight and that's it? Unless you can build some really cool stuff, I can see No Man's Sky becoming boring very quickly. The arcade feeling of combat (from videos) is a bit of an issue too. The weapon has no weight at all for instance. People like exploring to find powerful items, cool stuff and optionnal bosses among other things. In NMS there will be plenty of barren planets. It all boils down to this question: can mathematics (procedural) really create an interesting world to play with? And my preliminary answer is "no." Sure, it looks spectacular, but is it FUN? I have my doubts. From the constant pop in to the lackluster combat and crafting system, I haven't seen anything from a game design point of view that is revolutionnary. My hype deflated a lot since the initial reveal.

Hope there are a lot of surprises in NMS otherwise I could see the game losing steam not long after its release. Twitch will help discovering cool planets, but once people figure out the variables all planets will look the same aside from 1-2 things like its fauna and temperature. There's so much room for crazy stuff, but is it really in the game? Will you land on a zero gravity moon? Will you face a galactical monster of some sort? Will there be towns or encampments? I'll stay cautiously optimistic, but the gameplay doesn't sell me at all so far.

I expect a lot of screenshots of space dongs

The last three minutes of that footage just absolutely sold me on it.

That immense scale. That galaxy map. It scratches an itch that has not been scratched since I last played Freelancer 12 years ago.

I can see people putting vids up of how long they survived the waves of Sentinels. To me that seems like the perfect meta-game.

What if the AI is procedural?

I think we've seen everything the game has to offer gameplay/interaction wise:

1. Scan creatures, planets and obelisks for giggles/renaming rights, for uploading money and to translate alien languages
2. Mine resources
3. Upload discoveries for money
4. Upgrade ship, suit and tools with crafted or purchased resources from space-station traders or from shooting stuff or maybe hacking into alien computers
5. Avoid Sentinels if you shoot too much stuff or otherwise piss someone (or some thing) off
6. Find "safe zones" on planets with harsh atmospheres to recover your shields; shoot holes into hillsides for hidden caves, etc...
7. Fly to the next planet; maybe fight some space pirates or shoot some ships/asteroids along the way
8. Repeat 18 Quintillion Times as you head toward the big shiny light in the center of the galaxy

Did I miss anything? (Looking at the basic nuts and bolt of the game)

Will this be enough to justify the $60? Will this keep you entertained and awestruck for more than, say, 30 hours?

We'll find out soon enough!

I don't think we've seen a third of what this game has to offer.

That sure is an odd thing to say. We've not only seen aggressive animals in past videos, and dangerous environments (in the very video you just got done watching, even!), NPC's that will kill you, and we've seen plants that will kill you,

There's no shortage of stuff that can kill you.

The main thing I got from the violent rampage in the Sony video was the dreaded "out of ammo" message; it seems that will be as annoying as I feared.

There was a nice beat in this one where a Sentinel's view of Ryan was blocked behind a tree, so it flew up and over. Good to see that there's no magic AI vision.

I don't understand why IGN forces their videos to be 3 minutes long though. You barely get into it and it's over.

The first IGN First video showed an aggressive goat creature that attacked Sean for getting too close. We saw a rampaging rhino-dino thing in the 2014 E3 trailer. Sean has said that there's a natural pecking order to each planet, with some creatures being carnivores and such. I agree though that I'd like to see more of that in action and I rather would've had a more dangerous ecosystem than the Sentinels to provide the threat mechanic. But not a dealbreaker for me.

The "crazy stuff" you want starts happening as you get closer to the center of the galaxy. We saw floating islands in that 2014 trailer as well.

If you're not feeling it by now though, it may just not be a game for you.

9. You can become a space trader, buying and selling stuff at different planetary outposts and space stations. (we don't have much info about NMS's economic system yet, but each outpost/station will be trading different goods and at different prices)
10. Find a portal. Portals open up wormholes to planets closer to the center of the galaxy, which means you might find valuable stuff there, but at a higher risk as planets closer to the center are more dangerous...especially if you have low-level equipment.
11. Find relics which will fill in pieces of the narrative about the ancient race who left all these death robots for you to play with.
12. Hack/force your way into alien factories/buildings and steal stuff like tech blueprints.

Knowing Sean's resistance to leak too much info, it's highly likely we haven't seen everything the game has to offer. But I think some of this handwringing everyone is doing about specific game mechanics will fall away once they are playing the game. I think it's going to be more of a "here's this crazy adventure I had today" experience.

What I really need from this game is a form of terrestrial travel that's faster than walking but slower than flying. Like a speeder bike or something. The Jetpack is a good idea, but its more of an extended jump really.

Minecraft in space!

no, not really.

Man, that video is so good. I wish it was longer! I would have liked to see Sean hop to a couple completely unseen planets just so we could see some more variety. We've seen the same handful of planets for months now and there are way more than billions of them. Anthony's enthusiasm while playing the game was great, even if it was played up a little bit for the video. Really enjoyable to watch. God, the galactic map keeps looking better and better. That is some slick stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing more video like this.

The amount of sentinels and their response rate have been beefed up for the demo, it wont be this bad in the release version.

And everything else, i guess its just not your game?

. If it's running at a locked 60fps, that makes me hopeful for a PSVR update in the future.

I may have been mistaken in the game running at 60FPS, as it appears the video is 30FPS video in a 60FPS encoded video.

Cross-posting from the other No Man's Sky thread, I think I've found they're using two separate builds, one on PC and one on PS4.

Here's a screen capture of the cockpit on the 21 minute IGN First video released last week;
Notice at the bottom right, the screen that has it's texture reversed. This video plays very smooth 60FPS

This is a screen capture of the PlayStation video ;
It's in the correct rotation. A simple bug, but shows that even though they're at the same areas and conditions, this small texture bug shows it's running on different version, (I think)

That's not to say that the PS4 version isn't going to be 60FPS, but so far they've not clearly demonstrated the game working at 60FPS on PS4 yet. I do hope for PSVR support, I've made numerous posts before with the hope and 'evidence' at least in the interest of VR support from Hello Games before, but after all this time - we still don't have at least any proof they're running at 60FPS on PS4, even with 60fps trailers (which could easily be PC footage) and IGN First's running on PC.

Just had a thought:

What if they had a conquering evil alien/machines swooping the cosmos and there is nothing you can do about it. If you discover them and flee, they will track you. You could lead them to someone else's galaxy. Like the Borg from Star Trek.
I don't know. It's a common universe, so they can throw different ideas at it.

It's all just (very exciting) "what if" at the minute.
In honesty, it's not just the game as is that excites the curly turds out of me, it's the fact that Murray has repeatedly said that should it take off his aim is to keep updating content. When a dev says they've kept stuff "out" for the time being, you'd hopefully take that as a sign that it'll be relatively easy to put in some game-changing additions to the base game.

Exciting times. Please don't be shit.
