IGN platform specific GOTY awards are up

Best DS Developer: Vicarious Visions?

They must be going out of their way to not Nominate/Award 1st party.

does it matter?
As long as RE4 is on PS2, it deserves to get GOTY on that platform.
nah, GOTY for PS2 is between Guitar Hero, DQVIII or SoTC

edit: forgot about SoTC.

I don't mind GOW getting GOTY for PS2, but if RE4 also gets overall game of the year, while RE4 doesn't get PS2 game of the year then it would be kind of wonky.

I played the demo of Jade Empire and I thought it was really good. But after reading this, I'm definately going to pick the game up and play it now. Wow, a 9.9 and GotY? SOLD!

I actually liked almost everything about Jade Empire except for the battle system. I wouldn't say Xbox GOTY or 9.9 quality, but it was a good game. God of War and Guitar Hero were both good picks for PS2. I haven't gotten a chance to play Resident Evil 4 or SOTC yet, but those are the next 2 games I'm going to play. Lumines should have beat GTA:LCS, but it could have gone either way.

1) How is DDR better than Donkey Konga? the 7 year old game is feeling tired like Tony Hawk.

2) Speaking of Tony Hawk, exactly what size money hats are they getting to pretend like they still enjoy it? Same goes for EA Games.

What about Devil May Cry 3? I heard a lot of praise about it... did it not get a mention? I plan on playing it when the special edition version comes out with the easier difficulty level.

i have no problem with god of war or RE4.....

also, i loved jade empire.. i don't get the hate. the combat wasn't perfect, and it was a tad short for an rpg, but it was stellar in every other aspect. Still i would have given xbox goty to ninja gaiden black.

I don't get the hate either. Not any worse than KOTOR 1 or 2. I finished it twice when I got it, and I'm kinda tempted to play through it again.

Yuck I hate the way they set it up so you only see one award per page. >_<;

I won't bother whining about the stuff I disagree and instead just be immensely happy that Wario Ware Twisted! got some much needed love and recognition!

God of War's soundtrack is well-made, but entirely forgettable in comparison.

I agree, only I feel Killer7's score is most memorable. I mean, I can recall many of those tunes. I can't recall a single GoW tune.

[apocalype]Kotor 1 is as far beyond Kotor 2 as Kotor 2 is far beyond Jade Empire.[/apocalypse]

COD2 as 360 game of the year....hrm

I woulda liked PDZ to get it ...but PDZ Story mode isnt as good as COD2....but its got Coop, the live mp is awesome, hell the splitscreen mp is awesome ....

oh well ! :)

Shadow of the Colossus is better than God of War.

Someone buy this man a drink.

Yes, SotC is better by far. It wasn't just a game. It was an experience - a wonderful, moving, awe-inspiring experience that I will play through many times before I am done, and one that I will never forget.

Jade Empire? That game is way too flawed to be even considered. There were AT LEAST a dozen better Xbox games this year.

IGN's pc awards are really really wonky. They make Gamespy look awesome. :lol

also how can COD2 win for sound? It lacks EAX 4.0 etc. Just isnt as immersive or accurate as some of the newer games in sound. Then again IGN lack logic.

Samsung 102" Plasma

Why It Rocked: Yes, its more or less only a prototype right now, and yes, it will probably cost more than a hundred grand when it is ready to be sold, but that's right now. 20 years from now, maybe even just 10, stuff like this will be available to normal people. If we're lucky, most of us will still be alive then, so start getting excited. The one-upmanship amongst Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and the other major electronics players in producing bigger and bigger plasmas is pushing technology forward, and it's very cool to see such rapid progress being made. 2006 will likely see the birth of even bigger panels, and we can all have a reason to lust for more money to buy one.

Runner Up:
Panasonic TH-65PX500 65" 1080p Plasma

You're kidding me!!!

That 65" Panny could be good in afew years. :lol

Xbox Sports Game of the Year: NCAA Football????
360 Sports Game of the Year: Madden????

Really, the mind boggles.

Holy shit, people actually like Jade Empire?!

I would have given it the title of worst RPG of the year. The combat was mind numbingly boring and required absolutely no strategy at all, the characters and story were uninspired and dull, the role playing elements were... well, nonexistent, and it was linear as all hell. Everything about that game was terrible except for the graphics and even the graphics had a price to pay; the load times were like 25 seconds long.

BF2 got robbed in lots of categories. Civ4 got too many awards

Refuse to comment on console awards, as I'll likely be torn to pieces :)

NCAA IS the best sports game on Xbox by far. Better franchise(dynasty) mode, far better atmosphere, better commentary, and it simulates college football mechanics almost flawlessly. The only gameplay knock is that receivers drop passes way too much, and that can be fixed with sliders.

Madden 360 being sports game of the year is really stupid though, with NBA2k6 being out there. If there was an award for "half of a sports game of the year" then Madden 360 could win it, hands down.

did kameo just win best art?

:lol

Also Jade empire sucked. The gameplay was pure button mashing. Also concerning god of war i think IGN was blinded by the great production values and didnt actually notice that game was really shallow.

The game has its charms, but there are significant problems with the passing game that make it unplayable for me. It's infinitely easier to complete a 50 yard fly pattern than a 5 yards curl. That's a fundamental problem that essentially makes the game broken.

Also the simmed stats are horseshit.

I agree with that to some extent. If this was a month ago I would have agreed wholeheartedly because I couldnt complete a simple crossing route to save my life. However, after playing 9 full seasons, I've gotten a lot better at it. Also, I noticed that if your playcalling isn't balanced, the computer eventually starts playing the pass and after awhile will call the perfect defensive scheme for whatever pass play you may call, whether its a deep post, or a quick out. When I balance my playcalling, my passing stats (especially completion percentage) are way better. Now this still pisses me off because if I'm Texas and I'm playing against some crummy team like Rice, it shouldn't matter what I do because the sheer difference in talent should allow me to dictate how I want to run my offense, but it seems that with passing, the only thing that matters is the scheme, as opposed to the run game, where the success seems entirely dependent on the level of talent you have at offensive line and RB.

These are flaws no doubt, but to me I can live with these a lot more than I can live with the things that annoy me in Madden 06.

i finished the game despite

1) a retarded story that didn't do chinese mythology justice at all
2) the retarded fake language (had to turn voice volume to zero so i wouldn't throw my controller at the screen). it's insulting what some people think sounds 'asian'.
3) an art style that while eastern inspired, just looked wrong to me and others who grew up on chinese/hong kong period dramas/martial arts series.

so i'd say that the basic mechanics were pretty good and fun, but the other elements prevent it from being even an 8.0 game to me. oh and the martial arts were also a bit unbalanced (storm dragon + any basic attack FTW).

I just viewed the GC awards.

Looks like RE 4 is winning the 2005 year award.

Biggest suprise is Rev. controller...... yeah right! <------ they should add another award called "TEH Shocker Award" that would be suitable for the innovate design. :lol

Biggest surprise would be unveiling of Zelda:TP. I don't know what IGN smoking on but ahhh well. :lol

Do the actual best games EVER win on these things? Last year Tales of Symphonia didn't win anything anywhere (I think these people just saw Paper Mario 2 and decided to give it the awards just because it has "Mario" in the title) and this year Phoenix Wright gets ignored completely in the DS section. At least DQ8 got best PS2 rpg, though they failed to mention makai Kingdom in the runners up.

Jade Empire?! :lol

That game was awful. It was a chore to play through. The story did not enthrall me at all. So many better games on the Xbox this year. IGN blows.
