IGN - PS Vita is "region free" says Sony VP

They have everything else in the bag, so I've already pre-ordered, but a confirmation on this detail would give me peace of mind.
And internal memory. If it comes with nothing and they push PSN games and full Vita/PSP games but I need to buy a 32GB card then I'll be sad.

It'll be locked to an account like PSP, surely. Unless Vita allows multiple users, which I doubt, it'll be a bit of a hassle to change regions. Though there's always the physical media.
At least you'll have 3G (or some kind of tethering for most people I'm sure) that will allow you to switch accounts on the move. :)

The lack of required internal storage suggest multiple accounts is unlikely I'd guess.

Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, DS were region free.
I just think people shouldn't be so quick to celebrate. It'll be great if it's confirmed, but things are so crazy in the industry right now that it's hard to depend on anything.

correct me if I'm wrong, the reason why DSi is region locked is because of that's how it's online store works right?

well, Sony won't have that problem since they already have the current infrastructure, actually changing it to region locked is probably more costly for Sony.

Pretty sure internal memory has been nixed (except for firmware). Sony is bleeding money on this machine.

Thank god! Sony.. its rare these days that you impress me.. but here it is..

Good news, for sure. Shame we can't take this for granted with portables anymore, but at least Sony's got it right.

Hopefully there will actually be some games worth importing, though... more than the original PSP and PS3, at least.

I think it was something about that and rating systems.

I don't want to get my hopes up only to have them crushed. I need the Vita to be region-free. :(

I have to wonder why people keep saying it will outsell it when the Vita seems to be doing everything right this time. Just because of mario?

because Nintendo have been keeping the handheld champion for how many generations now? it's hard to imagine them lost it.

No idea what got that reaction out of me, but obviously something is amiss here. I wonder when will the honeymoon period end..

Well, there has to be a catch somewhere, I suppose.

I don't think any platform has more games worth importing than PSP.

In fact, the majority of its good games require importing. :P

Yeah, but I thought nintendo was undefeatable in SNES era... so yeah... there you go. Who knows? maybe Vita will be the king of handheld this time.

Sony are so loathed by the hacking community it'll be region free no matter what Sony decide.

Yeah, but it's nice to not have to monkey around with cfw just to play a game. C'mon, you gotta appreciate this.

Just seems like the Vita would be sony's real chance to take it away.

Well, the PS1 and PS2 had more, for starters... frankly, I don't see a whole lot of worthwhile stuff other than the DJ Max Portable games and maybe Initial D...

edit: well, and a few compilations like Salamander Portable and the one with the Ginga Fukei Sapphire game on it, but... that's kinda cheating to count those.

Well it gets a little more complicated now.

Trophies are involved.

Which means if it's account-locked, we can't get Trophies in JP Vita games under our US/EU accounts for example.

Please just do everything the same as PS3, Sony.

Delio said:
Sure but this time it really seems to be matching the 3DS blow for blow.
You might disagree, but by comparing both handhelds today, the 3DS is making Vita more attractive than it actually is to a certain level.

:D This is the one thing I was waiting to hear. All the others I will wait a year or two on, but this one I'm getting at launch. Hype hype!

Yes. Yes we can. I have trophies for Demon's Souls from 3 regions hehe...

Besides DJ Max, I've imported on PSP:

Growlanser
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2nd
Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou
Parodius Portable
Pop'n Music Portable
Sakura Taisen 1 & 2
Salamander Portable
Soldier Collection
Twinbee Portable
Venus and Braves
Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3

I can only vouch for the rhythm games and shooting collections personally, but all of these and more Japanese-only games are well-regarded. I'd say having access to Japan's PSOne Classics alone makes the region-free nature of Sony's systems worthwhile.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that it is impossible to get trophies from, say, Love Plus on a US/EU account? It's probably hard to get DLC but trophies shouldn't be a problem.

Actually, I was thinking with downloadable content in mind. Anything cart based should be fine. Should.

EU is not getting it first

Sure. But if Vita wasn't region free I'd want to get it locally I think. That's why I'm keeping my preorder for now - in case this region free thing doesn't pan out.

I am a bit worried about store access, mind you. But I don't see any reason I can't use a EU or US account with - say - a JPN system.

It feels weird to be so wow'd by Sony, but damn, I'm wow'd.

$250 price
$40 game price
Region free
cross play
better online features than PS3
dual shock controls and unique controls
nextgen graphics on your hands
killer launch line up

shit just got real.

I want to believe. Region locking is such fucking bullshit, particularly in Nintendo's case when NoA doesnt localize shit.

Hmm, i wont be able to use my current psn account with the Vita? I need to make a completely separate account?

Something has to be wrong with this system...there's no way Sony is this generous.

I just bought a 3DS but I might have to buy one of these just to support this new bizzaro Sony.

SCEE won't have this - they're so paranoid about people buying their games cheap that they even make savegames on PS3 incompatible between the UK and i.e. Germany. Sony UK Blu Ray games also lack other language options.

We're just speculating here, but I'm pretty sure you would be able to use your current PSN account.

Now that is interesting. This means if I'd import it from the USA I'd get it for about 32,5% cheaper*
Less than new DSi XL as a matter of fact. Nice, I may actually be interested in this

*only proves how Europe is fucked by Sony :( Why is PSV nearly 50% more expensive here? Taxes and everything I know, but goddamn 50%?
