IGN: Xbox One could hit its stride in 2015

Hahahahaha, fat chance. Buying 3 consoles is a huge waste of money.

I totally agree with you!

And its even harder to do now than it was last gen

PC gaming is starting to blend in with Consoles (despite remaining spearate)

Mobile continues to pressure form the sidelines

Core Gamers have 3 Choices but are mostly rallying behind Sony at this point while still fighting for Nintendo to hang around and put out their games?

Xbox is the Unpopular one but still sitting on the very solid Number 2 spot.

This was is a scientifically sound survey conducted in cooperation with Ipsos, with a larger sample size than most presidential polls. It's a nationally representative survey of gamers, segmented into 5 categories. You're going to see a lot more about it on IGN soon.

Another fun fact the survey revealed: core gamers spend more money not just on games compared to non-gamers, but they also spend more money on music, movies, TV, and apps.

Great to hear that the survey was done correctly -- what sample is it representative of? By nationally representatiove, do you mean just the US, or the world? The sample size is only as relevant as it makes the standard errors small, and the article makes no mention of the standard errors.

The analysis is still faulty regardless of the sampling. I sincerely recommend consulting with someone before publishing more results based on it -- I assume that Ipsos provides those services as well.

I think it's going to struggle more than 2014, to be honest.

They've got pretty much nothing for early/mid 2015 while Sony seems to fill it's whole year up. They are going to continue to lose ground.

I've posted this before, but since it's relevant:

Yes, if you look at totals only. The Xbox One is 800k ahead of where the Xbox 360 was at the same point (in the U.S.). But by breaking it into periods you can see that the One had a fantastic launch and has since slowed down a bit relative to the 360.

Rather than "hitting its stride" the Xbox One has actually slowed its pace a bit.

Well let's not forget that the Xbox 360 was the only "next-gen" console at the time for an entire year. That contributed massively to its success because it had a one year headstart on the PS3 and Wii (and the 360 was a good console at that). If you wanted a next-gen console at the time, there was only one option, so it put up big numbers.

With the Xbox One, it came out after the other next-gen consoles (WiiU, which had a year head start, and PS4), so there was more choice for people to spend their money on. If you take that into consideration, Xbox One numbers are still impressive IMO.

MCC is gonna move Units man

Just like Smash is gonna move more WiiU's in the West than Mario Kart

Gamers throw away their principles for their favorite big games in my experience

The buyers remorse comes later then they sell their shit and rebuy it five times over to play the next hot game

Its a vicious cycle

This is unrelated to my point, which is that an annoyingly large chunk of those who say Microsoft has better games don't even know Sony's lineup, yet will dismiss it.

It didn't have next gen competition but it was competing with this small underdog console, you may have heard of it, called the PS2.

???

Okay?

Doesn't change the fact that many popular games (i.e.: EA Sports Lineup) debuted their (at the time) next gen versions on the Xbox 360 with that system being the only place to play them for a whole year. It greatly helped the system/brand become popular last gen.

At $299 and no software droughts, it definitely could.

Don't see it happening, though. One big reason why: people are choosing the PS4 for third-party games.

I don't know why people are shaking their heads at this, I think they're probably spot on about the XB1 turning things around. They're already outpacing 360 sales, its just that the PS4 is gone through the roof so people thunk its doing badly. The XB1 has some really good games and more on the way. MS has also been very aggressive with updates to the XB1's OS, and Sony has been lagging far behind. I can see people starting to take another look at MS' system, and its very possible that in some month (or months) in 2015 it could outsell the PS4. In the US at least.

I own a PS4. I do not own an XB1. But it is looking more and more attractive as time goes on to pick one up.

Yeah, agreed. Although I already own an X1, and I'm finding it harder to justify having it. Nothing they have lined up has me excited. But, I am very impressed with how much improvements they are making on the OS end of things. I guess it just depends on personal preference with the games. I think the problem is, most people are going to buy Third Party multiplats. Like the majority of the games you buy in a single year will be those titles. So the fact that PS4 almost always has a better version, I think will always be that incentive to just buy a PS4 or to stick with it. Unless you are really really excited for the exclusive titles they are putting out, I'm not seeing enough to get someone to jump over (yet).

Xbone has chance of closing to the PS4 only in US and UK after few years of hard battle.

Haven't been paying attention to the recent UK reports in the PAL threads? Sony's lead has grown significantly from Q2 to Q3 and is now pretty commanding in the UK. It will only increase by the end of the year.

Can't see MS doing anything other than settling for second place, no real possibility of them launching an attempt to close the gap. It would require Sony stopping the sale of PS4s for at least a few months.

I like it when people quote a massive number of games as if gamers are gonna buy every single game on a system. 150 to 90 means a lot less than you make it seem in my opinion. I'd argue most people are gonna look for the big exclusives and a few cross-platform games. In that scenario, quote away all the games that the ps4 has over the xbox one. Doesn't mean anything.

I like it when people ignore the entire point because it's easier to dismiss a different point. There's even a name for people who do that.

Hint: I was not making a quantity vs. quality argument.

Not in the beginning of the year surely because there isn't much announced games coming apart from State of Decay iirc. More accurate will be Fall 2014.

even if the company isn't likely to surpass Sony's meteoric success with PlayStation 4 any time soon. Indeed, Sony itself taught Microsoft that launching a console isn't a sprint, and that no one should ever count out a seemingly wounded, and even down-and-out competitor

Yh but unlike the PS3 the XB1 doesn't have a year advantage or the backing of WW because it's a smaller brand and not as popular as PS. Chances of them even catching up is slim.

Someone told them that Crackdown is not 2015 ?

Doubt it.

I know there are a lot of Xbox haters on here, but personally, as someone with no allegiance to either system (I owned both last-gen systems and neither of the current gen ones), the Xbone has the more appealing exclusives as of right now. Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo MCC are a whole lot more interesting to me than whatever Sony's got.

I honestly hope the Xbone keeps doing well since competition's good for everyone.

No, it's not. I don't understand where this is coming from.

Competitive platforms are good for the consumer. Sales parity is completely irrelevant to the consumer. In fact, if one platform lags behind the other, it is because the consumer has decided that one platform is not actually good for them. That is how it works. The dog wags the tail.

This "competition is good" thing has grown completely into a monster. Competition is the means by which a lessor is weeded out. If a platform is weaker, it should lose. That is competition. This whole "parity is good for the consumer"/"two platforms selling well is good for the consumer" sentiment is bizarre.

What you are espousing is not capitalism or competition but instead crony capitalism in which market competitors are propped up for the sake of having market competitors.

.

To me it seems like 2015 is shaping up to be a great year in general for gaming, for all three consoles. I'd guess it's a safe enough assumption that the Xbox One will do better too, on the whole, even if it doesn't match the sales performance of the PS4. It's a reasonable prediction, anyway.

This is unrelated to my point, which is that an annoyingly large chunk of those who say Microsoft has better games don't even know Sony's lineup, yet will dismiss it.

Who is saying that?

Sony's 2015 lineup is insane

It will remain the leader and fly past anything on the global scale at least

Not exactly sure how XB1 is gonna stack up for 2015 but I think they will at the very least tread water and remain a solid Number 2 in the market

Nintendo is a damn wild card but maybe they make enough money in the homeland to keep trucking along. Kind of sounds like Xbox's position here except Xbox is no where near as dominant in the states and Nintendo is in Japan

Remaining "a solid Number 2" won't exactly be much of an accomplishment this gen.

I think it will be more PlayStation hitting its stride after all the delays in the titles this year There are a few big titles out in the beginning of the year and a few important indie titles as well.

Sony must have a plan in place if they have this event in December.

Xbox can hit its stride as well but I could be mistaken but I don't see any big titles until at least September. It looks like they are going the same strategy as this year leaving all the titles to the end of the year to maximise sales in the Christmas period. Spenser said himself the important months are September to December.

Sony needed something to do after TheOrder was delayed. a preview event will undoubtedly sell a few units while keeping mindshare.

They have a big shot this year with Xmas and MCC

After that though?

WHo the hell knows. No way Halo 5 is gonna make waves. They are still gonna get all the big Multiplats regardless so I dunno what to expect

so Halo5 isn't going to make waves but the MCC is? is it just me or does this seem ass-backwards?

I would think the next big game in a franchise would get people to go out and buy consoles, not a 10 year old remake.

Once the holidays are over its gonna be a WiiU situation for X1. The only difference being that they will still have support in the US. People thought the lull between TF and FH2 was bad this year, its gonna be way worse in 2015.

Somehow PS4 has managed to cruise through the first year with no real hitters, slow updates and generally worse console deals but MS has still failed to capitalise on this. From Bloodborne onwards its going to be rough.

I keep reading that X1 is selling ahead of 360 at this point in time but is this still true?

While the PS4 may be the lead console of choice, X1 will still have 3rd party titles to help out in avoiding Wii U's situation for 2015.

What are we expecting outside of Halo 5 and Tomb Raider 2?
Gears of War 4, Scalebound, Crackdown, and Phantom Dust seem like they are pretty far off still

Not that compelling

You didn't like Limbo?

Not really. One of those games that was more style over substance. A lot like Deadlight, but not as bad.

Limbo was awesome, you shut up now.

No screenshot feature for you!

Pfft. I don't even care any more...

Seriously.

....

Seriously.

I'm sorry, please give me the screenshot feature...

I have all of the current gen systems, and I still find myself turning on my XB1 more than the others. There is literally nothing on the PS4 this Fall that I have any interest in playing. :(

MCC is huge and has the notalgia factor going for it

Halo 5 is an unknown and coming off the heels of a Soft Halo 4

I can say Halo 4 is the least played game of the series for me.

An American writer being ignorant of the challenges that the Xbox is having everywhere outside of UK/US..why am i not suprised.

Also no analysis of the fact that since the first 2 months its not outpacing the 360, on this trajectory the One will be under the 360 late next year. And it'll probably be sooner since The Ones first half year release slate is ..fable..

And to even get to that point they had to unbundle kinect, have price drops(UK& Europe) and pack in AAA games for free (unlike their competition).

games journalist doing shitty journalism..why am i not surprised.

Scarily enough for Microsoft, the PS4 will actually be hitting its stride in 2015 with a mountain of software.

And that includes the BIG AAA games some people froth at the mouth over.

IGN said:
Analyzing the limited data available makes it clear that Xbox One is selling healthily for Microsoft. Xbox One sales are steadily outpacing the Xbox 360's nearly a year into their respective races.

Isn't this true because of the huge initial sales at launch? If I'm not mistaken, the X1 is lagging behind X360 sales YTD when you look at sales from the same time period.

Unless ign knows of games coming in 2015 that we haven't seen, then I highly doubt it. Halo 5 and Tomb Raider won't be enough to save 2015. Sony at least has Bloodborne and The Order for Q1. The summer is lousy for both of them and then it's a wash during Xmas with Uncharted 4 vs Halo 5 and Tomb Raider 2.

Problem isn't the sampling size, but what exactly are you (as in IGN) trying to say with these numbers?
Because there's obviously a huge difference between the demographics picked and the actual sales number.
I don't quite get the "well it's 17 vs 14 so it's not that different" while singling out the WiiU which is at 11. Sure that's a bigger difference with the PS4. Not so much with the XB1, following the same logic.

If MS cant change the trend in 2014 it will only get worse in 2015 given Sony's lineup for 2015.

Eh? People keep saying this but I don't see anything in Sony's lineup that makes it demonstratively better than Microsoft's. The only thing I'm seeing is that they have a stronger early part of the year and that's really only based on Bloodborne and The Order.

To say PS4's lineup of games blows away the Xbox One's lineup is a bit crazy to me.

It tries to paint this as Microsoft is happy with Xbox One sales.

If that really were the case, I doubt they would have cut Kinect and offered all these ridiculous deals that forgo revenue in order to increase their install base.
