IGN's top 100 games of last gen

Well, todays update seals the deal. Not even a little bit of good is gonna come out of this list. It's not that I mind a difference in opinion, it's the fact that IGN as usual seems to cater to the AAA-behemoths judging by the games that will most likely end up on the top 20.

It's weird. This list isn't really controversial. It's like they're trying to be controversial, but failing at it as the resulting list is just too random.

I'm sure this has already been asked in the thread, but why doesn't some on GAF try and make a GAF list? Everyone wouldn't be tasked with making at top 100 list, of course, but maybe something like a top 25 list where #1 gets 25 points, #2 24, and so on and so forth. Only rules being the games must have been release first on a last gen console (360/PS3/Wii) and no handheld games.
the general consensus seems to be to wait for persona 5. Which is fine with me. Still a ton of last Gen gems I have to finish.

Fallout 3 will probably rank higher than NV, since this one is already on the list and the first is still missing. Smh.

Cue posters saying "As it should be". Smh at you too.

I knew what to expect before going in as previous IGN lists have been this, and maybe unavoidable. The problem stems from the fact too many of these games are really hard to compare, and honestly the placement without some sort of reasoning on why they are placed there is meaningless. Did people in the office vote? Did someone make a list, and if so what genres do they prefer or types of games appeal to them?

But taken from face-value, there's some obvious eyebrow raisers of how X is so much lower/higher than Y.

I don't even know by what metric they'd place it above NV. Clearly not based on impact at time of release given Halo 3's position...

As it should be.

Fallout 3 was groundbreaking. New Vegas a story expansion pack.

New Vegas was a distinct refinement to literally every single element of the game that mattered besides perhaps world design. Considering it a 'story expansion pack' and nothing more does it an insane injustice.

Fallout 3 has got issues.

Don't even bother, I had arguments like these (not with him) with people all the time. NV shall stay as the redheaded step brother, but at least some people still understand its merits.

Lol, I just don't get how some people could ever think 3 is better than NV

Then again, opinions differ I guess. F3 being better than NV is tolerable compared to shit like Halo 4 ranking higher up than Halo 3, which is just absolutely mind-boggling

DX:HR at 39, sigh. Granted, the boss fights were absolutely misplaced, but otherwise it's a masterpiece. I haven't played the DC yet (I do own it though), but that version seems perfect.

Indeed bro indeed. One of the last few games seriously reward your ingenuity.

Games that will definitely be in the top 20:

Last of Us
BioShock
Uncharted 2
Portal 2
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Skyrim
Grand Theft Auto V
Journey
Gears of War
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Alan Wake

This list is garbage so far, but it looks like both Galaxy games will be in the Top 20 so imokaywiththis.gif

Super Mario Galaxy should be #1 but IGN will never let that happen.

I think you're right. Wouldn't make much sense if MP3 and Portal 1 are already on the list.

Wouldn't mind Rayman Origins too, but why is it much better than Legends? Haven't played the latter yet though, but I really liked Origins. And from what I hear, Legends feels exactly like Origins and it has almost all Origins levels in it to unlock..

It relies way too much on the Origins levels to make it a full length game. Without those levels, it has too little content. It relies on reusing those assets, plus a new time trials mode to artificially lengthen the game. And all the creativity of Legends seems gone now. The mosquito levels which I really liked in Origins only come back in the Origins levels, but nothing new has been done with them or to replace them. Then there's the Murray levels. Those might work well if you are playing through the game on 2 player co op on a WiiU, but for everyone else (Which is 95% of the game's audience) we are not going to be able to do that and so those levels don't work at all. I played it on the Vita and the 360. They are tolerable on the Vita thanks to touch screen and silly on the 360. But never actually 'good'. Also to get the real ending in Origins you had to play all the teeth levels which were really challenging and fun. To get the real ending on Legends you have to collect every single teensie in the game, and there's like 700 of them.

As it should be.

No. Fallout 1 and 2 were groundbreaking. And NV is the true spiritual successor to them. FO3 is an open-world exploration spin off, not a post-apocalyptic role playing game like the other ones. If you think NV is merley a "story expansion" you didn't play it enough.

There are some outliers (Halo 4 and Tomb Raider O.o) but for the most part seems like a solid list so far. Wish Ni No Kuni was higher tho =/

#95 Vanquish
#91 Super Smash Bros Brawl
#86 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
#80 Xenoblade Chronicles
#72 New Super Mario Bros Wii
#55 Bayonetta
#53 The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
#21 Street Fighter IV

I only agree with SFIV since it had such a huge impact.

There were maybe 5 or other games on the list I might agree with had I played them(Souls, Witcher, Portal, and a few others)

To be honest I can't really complain about the rest of the dreck on the list since I'm not sure I could make my own Top 100 to be honest. I only own roughly 150 games from this gen anyway(excluding portables) AAA blockbuster snooze fests dominating the list shouldn't be a surprise to anyone considering the direction the industry is headed and how things played out last gen

I am in utter shock at how bad this list is.... I am assuming they just put in all the games they liked this past generation but didn't really rank them right? No other explanation for how bad this ranking system is right? right?

Jeez, I LIKE Halo 4 and even I think that placement is insane. I don't really care about this list though, so whatever, it's just some dudes expressing their opinions.

I knew it will be lower than I'd put it (which would be top 10, maybe top 5) but goddamn :( It's such a one-of-a-kind gem compared to most of the generation that even those bosses and weak final act can be forgiven.

Honestly as much as it's entertaining to read a top 100 list, it's pretty much impossible to make a good and accurate list. Every game above the number 20 spot is essentially the same rating. How anyone could objectively compare something like Ni No Kuni and bad company 2 and say one is much better then the other is just absurd due to how different and varied the majority of these games are to one another.

IGN should of just made a top ten 20 best games of this gen, or go more depth and do a 'top 10 games of *enter genre here' for each main genre

But that's just my two cents

I'm trying to read the list as if it's divided into tiers instead of ordered, so that each 10 or 20 entries are roughly equal, within the same tier, and one or two point difference doesn't matter. It's not helping.

I like your idea of making separate lists per genre. That would actually allow for some comparison between them.

Looooool @ the latest update.
So, let me get this clear:

1. Skyrim>Dark Souls
2. Fallout 3>New Vegas
3. Call of Duty 4>>>Every Zelda released last gen
4. Halo 4>Halo 3

Just... lol. Wow IGN.

Allow me to chime in with my surprise at Halo 4's ranking. Opinions are opinions, and I don't necessarily think anyone's opinion is wrong, but I don't get how anyone can think that game rates that highly. Ten years from now, I bet we'll hardly even remember that game existed.

Also, it's sort of funny they're doing this list when there are still games coming out that (supposedly) won't be on the current consoles, such as that new Borderlands game, or Persona 5.

I agree with those. COD 4 revolutioned the genre (for better or for worse) and Skyrim brought a freedom and a world with a depth most gamers had never experienced. That being said I'm just not that big a fan of the Souls series.

I'm sorry how would we forget a game from the Xbox's number 1 franchise? Did I suddenly forget games like MGS 2? Even if you don't like Halo 4 I'd imagine people would remember it as the misstep in the franchise.

What is more ironic is that IGN said Dark Souls was a better game than Skyrim.

'Winner: Dark Souls' anyone?

How the hell did Halo 4 and Bioshock Infinite make the top 50?

Why is Dark/Demon Souls not closer to the top?

This same argument applies to Demon's Souls (#68) vs. Dark Souls (#23). This whole list as already mentioned is whack. Certainly caters to the AAA games and is also going in an order that puts the most recent title higher on the list. I don't get how Halo 4 > Halo 3.

Watch The Last of Us be first place..

I hope not, Don't get me wrong the last of us is great but its certainly not my top pick for Best game of last gen.

I just can't get into Spec Ops. I've heard all about the supposedly amazing story and have managed to avoid any spoilers up until now, but the gameplay just does my head in.

Yeah, I finished it but the gameplay was a massive stumbling block. I know some people tried rationalizing it by saying "it's supposed to be bad!" but... no. It's just a chore to get through, and that detracted from the chore its plot was supposed to be.

Still a quality game, but it stumbled bad and I don't knock people for not giving it much attention.

Yeah, this one is plenty, fully, overly wrong.

Nah

Totally incomparable genres, but I'm not surprised someone would rank CoD4 higher than the Zelda games.

Even if you loved the shit out of Zelda games, you can't really deny CoD4 single-handedly changed how online FPS games play.

I personally hope it is #1 but I'll be satisfied if it's in the top 3. It's one of the few games that didn't activate my ADD and I actually finished.
