IGN's top 100 games of last gen

Brawl's place is deserved and I'm surprised Vanquish even made the list. Don't know why people are so up in-arms about those two.

Halo 3 is surprisingly low. I thought it would at least be top 20.

And TLOU, Super Mario Galaxy/2, or GTA V will be #1.

When will we do this on GAF? The generation can basically be considered over, time for a GAF wide vote on what were last gen's best games.

I believe Persona 5 is the last significant previous-gen release to come out, so probably after that if someone wants to run one PROPERLY.

I'm not sure I'd be able to accurately rank my top 10, let alone 100. Like others said, I'm viewing this list as "the 100 best games of last gen" and leaving "top" out.

So, in no particular order, 10 of my favourite games from last gen:
1. Batman: Arkham Asylum
2. Uncharted 2
3. South Park: TSOT
4. The Last of Us
5. Demon's Souls
6. Metal Gear Solid 4:GOTP
7. Nier
8. Deus Ex:HR
9. Red Dead Redemption
10. Bioshock

I left out handhelds because that would just complicate things and I'm keeping it simple here.

Unranked. I could probably do a list of the 100 worst ones as well.

It's a great list that represents a wide variety of genres, platforms, and budgets with some games that are really unique and likely wouldn't make others lists. I especially like that you managed to include You Don't Know Jack. Good job.

This is where an army of GAFfers quote you and complaint that their pet game is not present, or that the game they've played 900 hours of but hate is on the list and shouldn't be because XYZ, without recognizing that multiple people can write multiple lists that are interesting and worthwhile without having the same games.

Halo 3 was one of the best games last gen, how is it number 82? It had the best console multiplayer ever and forge mode was great too.

I would like to see how many of the games that they have given 10/10 are getting in the top 10.

I can't honestly expect them to put Skyward Sword (10) over the first Mario Galaxy(9 something iirc), for instance. (although the first Mario Galaxy has good chances of not having anything above it, so it is not such a good example either). Same with GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption.

Best console FPS multiplayer last gen. Best console FPS co-op last gen. Level editor, screenshots, videos, stat-tracking...

#82 :(

I really hope Reach and 4 aren't on this list.

Thanks, hard not to include You Don't Know Jack. That's just great couch multiplayer fun.

I like it when these lists bring up discussions of games people might've missed out on or recommendations based on XYZ instead of 'that list is wrong because my mental list doesn't match that one'. With 30 editors and 100 games I'm sure it was a nightmare to just try to collaborate on a set list and that some of them do have games listed higher or lower on their personal lists.

As mentioned those reviews were made by individuals while this list was made with the staff of multiple IGN offices so games given a 10 might be lower than a game with an 8 or whatever.

I think Skyword Sword is perfectly positioned. I tried playing that again yesterday. I'm in the sand temple and the music is just grating. Then I spent about 30 seconds trying to get Link to grab a stupid ladder. Got through it alright, but I've since forgotten it and don't think I can go back to it.

Now I'm wondering if Monster Hunter Tri will be mentioned? I think its safe to say no. I'd almost put money on it.

That bloody layout. And I'm on my phone. Someone tell me whether Warhawk made the list. It better have.

Only 100-80 so far.

Wow, both Brawl, Skyward Sword and MKWii among the first 20? Would be more correct in the top 20 for sure.

Not Brawl. Its online was a messy clusterfuck that was unacceptable by modern standards.

I expect the same from the Wii U version at this point, even with the reveal of the online system. Its asinine how one of the franchises that could be one of the most powerful online games in history continues to avoid embracing it.

What do people think the highest handheld game would be, if handhelds were included?

And what would that game rank? Top 20? Top 10? Top 5?

My mind is currently blanking on great handheld games, so sorry if I miss something obvious. But if Handhelds were included I would say:

Bowser's Inside Story at #13.

Would love to see anyone here make a Top 100 list of games last gen, ranked or un-ranked.

Last gen was my second favorite, right behind the NES & SNES era. I thought it would be a neat exercise, and it was pretty tough to wade through everything that would make it. There were almost too many great games last gen.

Wow, I tried to read on the site and it's just a hot mess. How come that now that most people probably have a widescreen monitor, websites are starting to use vertical designs? More adspace?

Or is it for tablets? Who would use a tablet vertically? And even so, why can't they have a layout for PC monitors and one for tablets?

The best part about seeing Skyward Sword at 86 on this list is that within the first 30 seconds of the video review they linked, they drop such bombs as,

"It sets a new benchmark for modern gaming"

and

"The greatest Zelda game ever created".

IGN.

The responses to these lists are so dumb. "Oh no that game I like is 4 slots below a game I don't like, so list is invalidated." The fact that these games are on the list at all means they were great games in IGN's opinion. Isn't that enough?

Xenoblade Chronicles = #80?!?!

IGN.

Rich isn't even at IGN to defend his 10, let alone the fact that the list was made by a group of people and not just modeling the list after IGN's (shitty) 100-point scale.

...not that I think top # lists aren't stupid in the first place, but that's just the reality of it anyway...

Surprised they went with R6 Vegas original and not the sequel. I loved the persistent XP system across all modes that was used in the sequel.

Another interesting list, and I'm glad to see a few neglected games make it (Civ Rev in particular is something that a lot of people forgot about, and I'm also very glad to see Rock Band so high!) There are also definitely some black sheep choices like Turok, Transformers, and Castlevania HD, which is always cool because it sort of shows what your personal taste was. Thanks for putting it together. :)

This is the part where if you published this list on a site, GAF members would pull it apart because it includes "garbage" and doesn't include some "god tier" stuff and "The Last of Us is below Lost Odyssey how is that even possible?!?!?!?!" or whatever.

I believe the statements I quoted transcend the context of the score, as well as IGN's 100 point scale.

When you review for a publication, you represent that brand. IGN allowing that review to be published is an act that directly supports the reviewer's opinion. I understand that opinions change over time, but it's pretty drastic when the "Greatest Zelda game ever created" ranks below Crackdown and a Lego game on your website a couple years after its release.

I understand your logic. It was one man's opinion, but that man is paid and endorsed by IGN. Whether you lament the initial scoring, or its placement here, it's an embarrassment for the brand.

Flower is at 65 ahead of much more deserving games. WTF! It's a tech demo with nice music. It's barely a game. But ooooooh, it's so pretty. Take away the graphics and all you have is a six axis test program.

not only did Ni no Kuni (this garbage ass game) place in the list, it beat Xenoblade.

yikes, extreme shit. Catherine is too low. Even Flower's on here. err mah gawd

I should just wait until the final 20 and see if it redeems the list.

This is exactly what I was trying to explain to people, but got shat on for it. Doing shit like this makes your site seem inconsistent and by extension, untrustworthy. IGN has no ability to stick by it's guns. They do shit like this all the time.
