I'm a Bit Worried about Mass Effect: Andromeda

I watched the latest trailer (which I really liked). But notice how that at the end it says 'Not actual gameplay footage.' How are we not getting actual gameplay so close to launch? Doesn't this signal a bad vibe regarding the game's state?

Or am I being paranoid?

Have not seen much of it really. I am not a Bioware these days though anyway, it's a bargain bin price buy for me maybe. The fact Bioware is making it is cause to worry, they have fallen big time from their heydey imo.

It's promo and not exclusively aspects of the game chopped up for demonstration.

We'll likely see a lot more gameplay soon. This is a new approach from EA.

I'm keeping the faith even though it could turn out to be a disappointment. The issue so far has been the trailers themselves and I'm hoping their holding compelling content for the final 2 months of hype and the game itself.

EA does a pretty poor job so far promoting this game. Everything we saw until today was just meh. So much wasted potential. No real hype.

This is pretty valid, but EA thinks that it's doing the Fallout 4/XCOM 2 thing (revealing a game a few months before release), when it's doing The Division/Wii U catalog thing (showing next to nothing for titles that have been announced years ago).

That said, there's supposed to be a media blowout starting at the end of the month, including a 15 minute gameplay video going from the ship to a planet and doing tons of shit there.

Eh, if you're in it for a Bioware game, I wouldn't say the gameplay being a few years behind its contemporaries is going to be shocking. It'll probably be par for the course.

If anything, you're not getting too many story spoilers, and you don't have Mass Effect 2 to follow up, so the ending can't be as bad as Mass Effect 3's. I wouldn't be too worried.

I don't think these briefings were meant to show gameplay trailers. It was more to give you background on the game. I mean look at the first or second briefing, that was definitely CGI.

I did the survey for the multiplayer beta. If it's good, I will take it nonetheless. Even if the campaign is shit I will spend countless hours in it (like Mass Effect 3).

Technically that's not a trailer. That's just their promotional andromeda initiative timed hype machine. All of them have said "not actual gameplay footage" because they're not designed to be gameplay footage but rather a mockumentary of sorts to make you feel like you're getting ready to be the pathfinder.

The actual gameplay trailer - janky facial animation aside - looked fine.

I'm not a Mass Effect or Bioware fan but there seems to be next to no buzz surrounding this game after that one trailer dropped.

Its a Bioware game. I'd say a heavy dose of caution is highly recommended, if not required, regardless of how awesome the game may or may not look.

There will be EA Access and Origin Access the week before launch and we'll get a pretty good idea about what they're going for.

The last few trailers (the one at the NVidia presentation and the one at The Game Awards) were both real gameplay footage.

The Andromeda Initiative is pure marketing videos.

Apparently there will be a marketing blitz starting at the end of this month but I agree that what we have been shown so far has not been hype inducing. Having said that I am still all in for day one.

It's out in 2 months and we've still seen barely anything, that alone is cause for concern.

In addition, Bioware ain't exactly been on fire with their latest games, and this is doubly concerning if ME:A is taking inspiration from DA:I.
I especially hope ME:A is not a big open world collectathon that makes you grind crappy side quests to continue the story.

I'll be waiting for reviews and impressions anyway, there's too much doubt here and nothing that has made me actually want the game beyond the fact that "oh it's a new Mass Effect".

They said we'll get a full demo presentation "soon," as in exploring the Tempest, talking to some squad mates, landing on a planet, and doing a mission.

And, that's where we disagree. I thought DA: I was FANTASTIC.

EDIT, deleted.

Not really a Fallout 4 thing. We've known about Andromeda for a good while. Fallout 4 was announced with a pretty extensive gameplay trailer and the game came out a few months later. I get what you're saying, but I'm not sure that's what they're trying to do.

No, that's what they're trying to do. They're just doing a piss-poor job of it.

I'm a huge Mass Effect fan and I'm still super excited about this one, but the marketing has been some of the worst I've ever seen. Every time they're gonna show it the devs hype it up and then it's nothing. Except the game awards stuff, which was good. My excitement is pretty much due to the Mass Effect name and nothing else

Still think the game will be good

With footage like this it's more EA/BioWare being careful on how they represent the game, I think. We've come off the back of negative publicity regarding games being misrepresented in the market, and with Andromeda BioWare/EA are showcasing both actual gameplay, in-engine content, and more focus, scripted marketing trailers.

All the Andromeda Initiative stuff falls into the latter category. The camera angles are all scripted for presentation purposes, content is cut together in a way that may not represent actual gameplay, and some content may not even be rendered in-engine. Many of the Andromeda Initiative videos feature CGI clips, particularly of the Arks and Nexus, travelling between galaxies, alongside a lot of technical HUD displays that won't actually be in the game.

Thus in order to avoid giving a false impression that ends up plastered all over websites, BioWare/EA brand non-gameplay trailers accordingly. The two or three gameplay trailers we've seen are branded CAPTURED IN ENGINE, REPRESENTATIVE OF GAME EXPERIENCE. That being said I'm fairly certain a majority of shots in the Andromeda Initiative trailer, particularly this one, are in-engine and indicative of how the game will look. The interiors look like something running in Frostbite 3 (I recognise those cheap reflections anywhere!) and the asset quality is reasonable.

Thankfully Aaryn Flynn has confirmed that he recognises the lack of a lot of really long, meaty gameplay footage is a point of concern and high request among fans. He's confirmed a proper 10 - 15 minute gameplay sequence is coming, one that showcases a generally uninterrupted flow of gameplay, like starting in the Tempest, talking to some people, flying to and landing on a planet, getting out and exploring, doing some combat and puzzle solving, etc.

Marketing has been really bad considering how soon the game releases. I don't really want to see much of the game so most of it is a surprise, but I want to see just enough to keep me confident that this will be great title. Day 1 lol.

Quest structure is literally my only concern about Andromeda so I hope they don't follow in those footsteps. I'm optimistic they won't.

Yeah. A lot of people are pretty down on DAI despite the good reviews when it came out and the solid expansion. Personally I thought it was very good! People complain about the tedious side quests, but you could ignore those and mostly have fun with the main story. the environmenta were varied, characters were fantastic, I thought the combat was fun, the main story quest was long, etc. It was good!

This is comforting.

Because I *really* don't want to see the game get pushed back to November.

If they pushed the game back after only announcing the date 2 months before it was supposed to be released, it would be disastrous beyond belief.

All indications is that they waited so long to announce a specific date because they wanted to be 100 percent certain they could hit it. Anticipating a delay at this point is foolish.

I like to stay away from alot of heavy coverage of this game. I want to go in without too many spoilers. I like bioware games and the trailers I saw have shown me enough to preorder. Pretty confident this will be the best entry into the ME series. Combat looks great (just like ME3 MP), and if the story delivers then we have a winner

Just watched the video for the first time, and I don't really see the reason for any concern. While they might not have been showing in game footage, it looked like they used in game assets to create this demonstration. Nothing in the trailer looks like it can't be done easily on the current hardware anyway, and some of the shots of the interior of the ship just looked like cutscenes you'd see in the game too.

It could be way worse. They could be advertising like Capcom has been lately. We're almost one week away from the release of RE7, and they've still yet to show off anything other than every other modern "horror" game, despite numerous claims to the contrary.

I could care less about shooting, stasis or color endings. I want to have affairs and piss off my jealous crew mates. Miranda will always hate me. That's the way I like it.

And why do we care about EA suits confidence level, when the buy/nobuy decision is usually on reviews and wom?

When I say EA's confidence of the title, I don't mean that in sales expectations, I mean in its quality.

Little marketing so far to me at least implies muted confidence in their own product, as if something is wrong.

Have you somehow missed the last trailers?

There really has been very very little shown off in the grand scheme of things.
Let's not pull a NMS and pretend otherwise here.

It'll carry the tradition of being all graphics and shit RPG (beside the first). You shouldn't be worried, you should be prepared.
CRPG elitism =[

Volume of marketing => game quality

Gotcha
