I'm really have fun with Ratchet PS4. What previous games are worth playing?

I'm happy the game is selling as hopefully that would lead to more big budget platfomers on the PS4, but with Nintendo in transition and other higher profile platfomers still in development, I'd figure I go back in the Insomniac catalog.

Based on Meteoritic it seems A Crack In Time was the best game of the series last generation. And I know there's a collection of the PS2 games on PS3. Any advice?

Get yourself the PS2 trilogy, pronto. They're amazing. Then move on to Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, and A Crack in Time. They're also really really good.

ps2 trilogy on ps3 + Tools of Destruction & its dlc Quest for Booty, A Crack in Time and Nexus.

I wouldn't suggest you to skip 1 even though you've actually played its remake

The HD PS2 ports, Ratchet: Deadlocked (or Gladiator, the EU games are called different)
Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty (short but fun) and Crack In Time
Into The Nexus (short but fun).

Here is what you buy:

Ratchet HD collection
Tools of Destruction
A Crack in Time
Into the Nexus.

Nexus comes with Quest for Booty, which falls between Tools and Crack chronologically.

If you haven't played Sly and Jak games, then be sure to pick HD collections for them and Sly 4.

Didn't I just play it, though? Isn't Ratchet PS4 it's remake?

Definitely not. It's not a 1:1 remake at all. If you want something more similar to the PS4 game in terms of gameplay but with a different story (story of the remake is a retelling of the original) then go for A Crack in Time.

The entire series is fantastic for different reasons.

Ratchet 2 & 3 are very close to perfect while the PS3 titles are a fantastic set of games :). Give my Retrospective on the series a read (will have one covering Tools of Destruction and the Movie + Comic later today) if you want to learn about the PS2 games :D!

They're all pretty damn great. That includes these two:

Edit: my mind wiped away All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault. Stay clear of those, as HiddenWings said.

I'm not entirely sure I can really suggest the first game anymore for anything but it's story (it's different than the PS4 one in a lot of ways). It's just not as good as the later PS2 games in terms of weapon variety or gameplay, and it's also the only one where your weapons don't evolve. That said, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal are both great, so pick up the trilogy anyway.

Edit: the "Future" trilogy is also very good, and A Crack in Time is maybe my favorite game in the series. Basically just steer clear of All 4 One or Full Frontal Assault.

Playing the trilogy, Tools of Destruction, A Quest for Booty, A Crack in Time and Into The Nexus.

Be prepared for a totally different Ratchet in the first game.

On the flipside, I would strongly suggest you skip 1 since you've played its remake. The game feels quite different to the later entries; Ratchet's a selfish asshole, the 'buddy platformer' dynamic isn't there, you get next to no health until late game, and the difficulty balance is pretty out of whack. It hasn't aged well.

2 and 3 are goddamn masterpieces though.

Play:

PS2/PS3 (remastered):
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet Deadlocked

PS3:
Ratchet & Clank Furture: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus

Skip:

Ratchet & Clank: All for One
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault
Secret Agent Clank

Maybe:

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (PSP/bad PS2 port)

This. Other games aren't as good for different reasons. Nexus was fun but felt rushed and had too many technical issues for me to enjoy.

Crack in Time is still the best in the series for me personally and easily one of the best PS3 games period.

60fps too and not a bad looker either!

PS2 games are a bit dated, and I wouldn't want you to burn yourself out before you play A Crack In Time and the PS3 titles which I feel are all vastly superior in this day and age.

The best game remains A Crack In Time for me. Best balance of weapons in the series, plus the gravboots accelerate the gameplay in a fantastic way. Also has a selection of the best side content and Clank gameplay in the series. One of my favourite PS3 games.

The first Ratchet is very primitive compared to its sequel, and that was true at the time. The iterative leap between the two games is substantial. If you can handle it, I would start there, and play through the entire series up until A Crack In Time. I can't wholeheartedly recommend All 4 One and Q-Force, though. If you play all the other games, you'll probably be a fan enough to get enjoyment out of them, though. Both are at their best in co-op, so if you can go through them with a buddy, they're far better. The writing/dialogue in All 4 One in particular is actually pretty good.

But play Into the Nexus as well. It's a streamlined but excellent Ratchet & Clank game. I'm also guilty of getting to the game late, but I had a great time with it when I did.

This. Honestly play the main PS3 games first unless you are prepared for a marathon. You can always go to the HD trilogy if you still feel like wanting more Ratchet. And if you only have time for one game just go straight to CiT, it's so gud :)).

Ratchet is fun and all but I can easily see anyone being burned out after a few games.

I have to second this. He likes what he's played in R&C 2016, so it's best to provide him with experiences that are very similar to what he just played. A Crack in Time and Into the Nexus would be the two I'd recommend to him. Those are modern Ratchet titles, and good games on top of that.

Now, if he's still hungry for more then he should spring for the HD collection of the original trilogy.

I'd say you can safely skip 1 since the new game is pretty much a remake and the original feels dated. But play 2&3 since those had big gameplay improvements over the first, the move on to the PS3 games.

Is there a reason most people aren't recommending Deadlocked? I loved that game. If you just want no bullshit action/shooting without all the lame puzzles/gadget gimmick stuff, check it out.

Yeah I tend to forget Size Matters, undeservedly. Great game, I would quadruple dip(counting the dd version I bought later to play on Vita) if a ps2tops4 version happens.

Agreed, skip the first one. It's really dated now, the camera controls are awful, but play 2 and 3 and then go on to the future series.

Oh shit, and play Deadlocked/Gladiator too. It's the most underrated Ratchet game IMO, it's basically a Ratchet game that's all combat and very little gimmicky stuff. It's got some of the best comedic writing in the series too.

Skip 1, it's too dated and you've seen a bulk of the worlds. Not sure why people are recommending it.

Play 2, 3, Tools of Destruction, Crack in Time and Nexus. Maybe Deadlocked if you really like the combat.

There is no way you will enjoy 60 hours of the same game. Like they're not that dissimilar. Play A Crack In Time. It's the best of the existing games.

This is all you need, OP

It's got the best story, puzzles and traversal, but not the best weapons or best ship combat.

Going Commando had the best of those.

It's easy to "OD" on R&C. Stick with the PS3 ones if you need some more in your life!

I won't play them all straight, but I do want to know which are worth adding to my list.

Seems like ACIT is wining as the next must play.

I've been marathoning through all the main games again since the new one released. I think they are all absolutely worth playing, including R&C1.

big budget platfomers

Genuinely asking as I've tried only the first game on PS2, but does the series have significant platforming? I got the sense that as far as platforming went, Sly >>> Jak >>> Ratchet in terms of how much of it they have.

All of them?

All 4 One and Secret Agent Clank are average but still enjoyable to a certain extent. Full Frontal Assault was a great game too.

It's been a while since I played A Crack in time but don't you have to have played Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty to get the full story? It might not be best to start with it but I'm not sure. I do remember the story in ACIT being really good, and I wouldn't want the OP to miss out on that.

I don't think there is any real reason to skip any of the main PS3 games. All of them hold up really well and ACIT and Nexus are both gorgeous.

I didn't play ToD or QFB before playing ACiT and wasn't lost at all. Insomniac did a good job explaining the scenario of the game for people jumping in on that entry.

A Crack in Time is the one I'd play next. My favorite and you can go back and play the others later. Ne need to burn yourself out on the series

Personally, i'd only recommend the Ratchet PS2 trilogy and the PS4 game. never liked any of the PS3 or handheld games at all.

Not tons of love for nexus here

I actually played this game last weekend. It had been sitting on my shelf for a long time and all the movie hype had me break it out for my son to watch me play. It's.... sad. Ratchet and Clank has always been about these fun adventures through out the galaxy. This one was closer to Jax 2 in tone. When the game let you ignore the story and just have fun it was at it's best.

Yeah pretty much, I myself don't remember much platforming in R&C 2 and 3 HD ^^; I know 1 had a good mix though.
