I'm torn between buying a new PC or a PS4

That monitor seems overpriced, but I am not familiar with European price points.

Is there any way of just spending the money on an upgrade to your PC? Components are relatively cheap and easy to install compared to purchasing a new rig. A processor and RAM upgrade would likely increase your performance for cheap, an SSD would help with load times, and a decent video card would help render graphics more smoothly. I currently have my PC wired into a 40" TV in my room. I find the lag everyone keeps complaining about unnoticeable (please don't ruin that for me by pointing out something I can't unsee). I am super happy with my setup.

The only reason I would get a PS4 is if the majority of my friends had one, or if I really liked anime games from japan and other exclusives etc.

From what I understood my motherboard wouldn't allow me these kinds of changes.

Also I don't know anything about changing PC components. My current PC was assembled by the website who sold it to me.

Two things to mainly consider would be how much you care about the PS4 exclusives and whether your current PC can run most of the PC exclusives you're interested in. Even if it may not be able to run Witcher 3, can it run Titanfall? It's not an overly taxing game tbh.

edit

Ah you basically bought a 2008 pc in 2009 :P. that makes things differently.

I would invest into a new mid range pc rig then.

get something like a 760/770 > 8gb ddr3 > 128+ ssd disk, decent psu and a modern intel cpu.

If initial buy-in money isn't an issue, upgrade the PC. I own both a PC and a PS4 and one is currently a dust collector.

it's not even a contest as far as i'm concerned.

PS4 as a media device is inferior to even the PS3. It is not very powerful. It lacks backwards compatibility. It ahs a paltry selection of games (and poor ones at that). It doesn't have much of note coming out for it

A new PC would do you much better

Honestly, I don't care at all for the currently announced PS4 exclusives.

Only PS3 exclusives that were really worth playing according to me were Demon's Soul, Journey, TLOU, and Uncharted 2. With the two lattest still being overrated in my book.

If you cant afford both, it means you couldnt afford a high end PC in the first place.
He doesn't need a high end PC.

And once you have a decent gaming PC, the extra money for a PS4 and games is much harder to justify. People still do it if they can, but I could think of much better ways to spend that extra half a thousand dollars(at least).

Saving big on steam sales requires you to have a 9-12 month buffer on new games. A similar buffer on PS4 will mean that you'll be paying about €25 instead of what it would have cost on a steam sale, say €7.50. there will obviously be exceptions to this but my point is that it will be a long time before you recoup the increased cost the PC has over PS4.

And there's PS+

I'd go for a PS4 (I have both btw)

I was in a similar situation OP. I had around 600 bucks in savings that I was going to put towards a new console, a year subscription to xbox live or ps+ and a game or two but I realized that almost all the new games coming out were multiplatform and would be hitting PC in addition to the tons of other pc games I already enjoyed playing but wouldn't mind seeing them at a better frame rate and also the upcoming pc exclusives from indies.

I had a first gen i7 setup that I thought was still pretty good and a GTX680. I replaced it with a 4770k haswell cpu, a new mobo and 16gigs of corsair dominator ram and even though I didn't change my video card, my frame rates went up dramatically in all my games.

It's going to take a good 8~10 or so 1st party exclusive titles I think before I jump on a new console. I'm not invested at all into the PS+ or xbox multiplayer ecosystem so there was no group of buddies motivating me to buy one console or the other.

Simply watching each console from the sidelines though seems to point to PS4 having a stronger offering or will have a much nicer lineup in a year or so unless MS pulls out all the stops at E3 but based on some tweets I'm seeing, Sony is going balls out at E3 this year.

Either way, I'm very happy with my decision to upgrade my PC.

Definitely look into it. RAM is quite easy to upgrade, as is the processor. Just check your motherboards compatibility. I don't think 2010 hardware would be incapable of upgrading by now unless it was intentional built in obsolescence.

Thinking long term, new PC definitely, I know it's an large initial outlay but after that you make huge savings on games, and depending on your purchasing habits that alone can can make up the difference and more, I love my PS4 but I just refuse to pay £55 for a game atm so I've barely touched it.

Honestly I'm just terrible with those things, and my current schedule doesn't really allow me to get into it properly. My new PC would be assembled by the seller as always.

Unless your looking forward to Infamous, PC for now. Can't really go wrong with PC. Then you have ages to save up for a PS4 come fall.

Then I hope you enjoy your new rig sir! May it delightfully fulfill all of your gaming needs for many years to come. =]

en e8400 is from 2008, not 2010

anyhow build a pc it's a no brainer, between the lack of online fees and far cheaper games you can build one with better hardware and save money at the same time
Go to the I need a new pc hread people will help you there, you also don't need to spend 1000 dollars unless you want some really high end rig

I'd suggest spending extra on a good monitor though, most basic monitors (and all tvs unless you have a (now discontinued) Kuro plasma) are pretty bad for gaming purposes

My favorite thing about buying new hardware is being able to play all the games I already have at much higher framerates and image quality (if only there was such an option to make bayonetta and dragon's dogma on my ps3 not run and look like shit :( )

PC, then buy a PS4 when there are any exclusives you want.

People talk of steep price with PC's, but you can invest in a good motherboard, a good processor and then upgrade the rest over time, all while you're saving money on games cheap as fuck.

If you've got a preference for Titanfall and you prefer the XO pad to the DS4 you should look to get a PC first.

If the usual Playstation exclusives do nothing for you it's a very easy decision. There's really not much to shout about on the PS4 right now or in the near future.

I was in the same situation. My pc was costing about $900 so i went with a ps4. Happy with my purchase so far.

I will build the pc later this year

As for budget, I'll have a summer job from the beginning of june to the end of august. So yeah, a full salary will go into the PC. Probably around 1000-1200€.

I'd go with PC, but I'd wait to see the requirements for TW3 before.

Which is exactly what I'm doing... waiting for TW3 to build a new PC (mine is pretty old now).

Personally I'd go PC. I regret buying my PS4, it just doesn't seem to be high quality build-wise. First it kept ejecting discs (even trying when none were in) which I was able to fix myself and now the controller that came with it keeps shutting off (mostly -- PS, Options, and Share work -- nothing else) after about 5s. This requires a reset with the reset button near the L2 button constantly.

his pc is from 2010 and he already wants to replace it.

op, go for ps4.
2009, actually. And that makes it almost 5 years old.
Which, on a side note, is more than enough of a lifespawn to compensate the initial investment with cheaper software, especially if he buys a lot of games.

I recently sold my PS4 because PC is too good and couldn't find myself motivated to turn on my PS4 while having a much better next gen system.
Build one and get ready for the next gen only versions of Dark Souls 2 and arguably, Titanfall.

Star Citizen and Project Cars are coming soon.

The thing here :

Are you a graphic whore?
Do you care about PS4 exclusive right now?

This sounds like you are trying to stealth-troll PC gamers. The PC has much better exclusives right now btw.

PC might cost more at first but, No yearly payment to a system exclusive online system, rebates on games, steam sales, all the other key vendor sales etc..

For the price of the ps4 you get a more powerful pc with cheaper games and an awesome library. Ps4 is still suffering serious droughts and there, at least for me, no must haves on the horizon. Go with a pc OP.

PC. This is the only option. You will likely save money because Steam gives you very little reason to buy a game for more than 20 dollars.

Forgot to say I have a Vita and PS plus.

No brainer then, PS4. Any games on PC exclusive to there are usually Indies, really low quality graphics Indies like Swapped, antechamber and so on.

Whereas you not only have Sony exclusive s but console exclusive s like Gtav and dragons dogma as examples from last gen.

ps3 came out 2006 and it still plays ac3. how many of you pc gamers still use a pc from 2006 and never had to buy any parts? op is worried about cost. he'll have to buy pc parts down the.line before this gen ends.

I'm all for PC, but let's not be dishonest, here.
At least at this point in time, he WILL pay more upfront if he goes for a PC.
Of course, I agree that he's going to compensate that initial investment in the long run, but that's another argument.

The processor is not upgradable to a current i5/i7. With a new Intel CPU comes the necessity of DDR3 Ram, so the old RAM is wasted as well.

Must buy everything new basically in terms of core hardware.

I'd upgrade the PC and wait on the PS4 until the first price drop. By then the library will be more robust.

In fact, that's exactly what I did last year. I picked up a new video card for my machine for half the cost of a PS4.

PS4 later when there's more visible exclusive in the horizon, even if you have a vita you'll have time to build some kind of library (maybe not the best) for a potential PS4 later on thanks to PS+, and PC + Vita should easily sustain you for this year.

Also you would be able to get the multi on PC for cheaper and better quality, even when you finally get a PS4.

Honestly, I don't care at all for the currently announced PS4 exclusives.

Sounds like you already know what to do then :p

PS4, of course. How else are you going to play garbage like Infamous: The Third One and The Order of Waist High Walls and Quick Time Events and Motion Blurs.

Honestly, I don't care at all for the currently announced PS4 exclusives.

Piss easy decision: PC

I don't know why PC gaming automatically means graphics whore to some people. I care more for IQ, stable framerates and loading times than super fancy rendering. I lower the graphics settings for all my PC games until I hit stable 60FPS at native resolution, because those two definitely affect gameplay. My rig can play BF3 at 30-40FPS ultra, but I toned down it to Medium to lock native 60FPS in all situations.

If you go with pc, make sure you tag all the ps4 games for download through ps+, so you can enjoy them later. Ps+ is friggin awesome, and I love that you don't have to buy it for each device.
