I'm torn between buying a new PC or a PS4

Honestly, I don't care at all for the currently announced PS4 exclusives.

Only PS3 exclusives that were really worth playing according to me were Demon's Soul, Journey, TLOU, and Uncharted 2. With the two lattest still being overrated in my book.

I think this says it all right here.

PC it is.

PS4. Something great about being able to sit down and not have to be concerned about "will it run".

PC will ALWAYS have more bells and whistles, that is the nature of the game. The question becomes is the parity difference between PC and PS4 versions of games at a point that matters to the individual looking at this decision. For me, I have my PC and PS4 in hooked up in the living room and - for now - I game for more on the PS4 (and previously the PS3). Yes, non console exclusives I tended to go with the PC (good graphics do help in keeping you immersed), but after playing KZ, NBA2K, TR:DE and one assumes Infamous:SS - I'm not feeling that "/sigh. . ." factor so much.

Right now the PC has the stability (or if it doesn't someone mods it in) and the capability (if you can build a rig that can do it) to run 1080P and 60FPS as standard. Great. There are games on the PS4 and on the horizon with nearly similar IQ and (almost bun not quite stable) 60FPS. As a casual gamer (who used to nose-thumb 60FPSers, but now can see a difference), fine by me.

In terms of software: are people really arguing this? You've got a platform that has existed before many of you were born, and a system out less than half a year. I'm seeing people talk about "long term" benefits of the PC when discussing hardware, and then totally dismissing the "long term" benefits of the PS4 software library. Feh.

Its weird, PC gamers are really quick to insult people who disagree with them but never bother offering up an argument. These games being what exactly? MMO's? On balance are you really arguing consoles are lacking exclusives when compared to what PC offers up? I am a fan of the strategy games but beyond that I wouldn't feel like I would miss out by not upgrading to the latest PC.

If so, then I disagree, but please continue.

oh god, i knew i shouldn't have played with that dial, what year am i in?

http://store.steampowered.com/news/?feed=steam_release the vast majority of these games haven't seen a PS4 release. keep scrolling and see how long it takes you to get through to just six months ago. make sure you take breaks, you don't want to get carpal tunnel.

I'd go with the PC honestly unless you're wanting PSN and PS 1st party games. PC is definitely the cheaper investment in the long run as you can do more and save quite a bit on software. Upgrading isn't really required as often as it used to be if you're sticking with a single monitor setup.

Humble Bundles and Steam Sales make the PC much harder to resist.

My PC remains a secondary device to my 360/PS4, but if I had to choose just 1 for all my "console" needs it'd be the PC. And 3DS.

Personally, between a PS4 and a PC I'd rather have a PS4. PCs are big and bulky, and if I have a dedicated gaming device I'd rather it be as small as possible. Also, I think it would be hard for PC gaming to be cheaper in the long run. Can you really build a contemporary rig for $400? Sure, there are Steam sales, but it's not like console games don't drop in price. The entirely of the last semester I almost never paid more than $40 for a game.

But it boils down to the games you want. There are some great games on PC I'm really interested in (like weird old Japanese PC games like Koumajou Densetsu and the Total War series), but for the most part, I'm not interested in mainstream PC gametypes. I'd rather play fighting games, JRPGs, puzzle and arcade games, etc. So for me, a PS4 would be better (in the long run - actually, currently, 3DS has the best games on it!).

So really just think about what kind of gaming you enjoy the most and where you think the best games will be.

Another important question is, how much do you like RPGs?

platformsrukji.png

(Note that every multiplatform RPG in that chart is also on PC, and that there isn't a single PS4 exclusive RPG announced for this year)

I say PC is a better choice for the long haul. Get a PS4 later when it's cheaper and the library is bigger.

You must be joking, it's the exact opposite.
PS4 won't drop in price and keep you entertained enough until you can afford a PC. By then, PC's dropped in price.

That's what I'm doing btw.

I'd vote PC simply because the savings you accumulate over the years could go towards anything you like, including a PS4 when the games you like have arrived.

Also, if it's any use, an key upcoming steam feature will be an optimiser of sorts, that will compare your hardware with valve's database and set optimal settings for you and advice of parts should you want to go further or can't run something. We'd have to see how it pans out but it seems like they have a massive database of info to make it work successfully.

Also the usual, cheap games, no paywalls, etc etc and what seems to be ever expanding support.

I suppose there is also VR to pay attention to, if that's something you're interested in

go PS4, its cheaper for the moment and will do well against pc for the next few years, and it will have exclusives. If you get a vita too you always have the remote play option too.

I'm so fucking sick of hearing this. Yes, PS4 will have some exclusives, NO, it won't have even 1/10th as many exclusives as PC does.

I would go PC until PS4 gets some exclusives you need to have. If you have the money for a PC upgrade, might as well play the superior versions of the games you want.

PC will be better both now and later. It does things other than play games.

PS4 should only be attractive if there are exclusives you have to play. Or already have a PC.

I follow the cycle of buying new consoles in the first year of release. Then about 2-3 years later a new PC. Then new console. Then new PC....

Love this strategy!

Everything here couldn't be more wrong. PS+ makes a compelling case you could end up closer financially with a console if you stuck with PS+ freebies, but you can build a gaming rig with similar form factor to a PS4 and spend $5-600 being beyond the specs the PS4 has.

You never paid more than $40 for a game, but on PC it's easy to get games on release day for under $30. Wait a bit and hell Lego Marvel was just on sale for around $11, a few moths after release, while the lowest it's been for PS4 was $40. You can save enough in the first 6 months to offset any initial costs. PC gaming will always be cheaper all else equal, unless you are in it for the rush of being on the bleeding edge of every new GPU available instead of for gaming.

As someone who just chose to purchase a PS4 over having his PC fixed and upgraded, I say go with the PC. I love my PS4 so far, but PC has the greatest variety of compelling games at the moment, without a doubt. Most of my most-hyped upcoming PS4 releases are ports of existing PC titles.

Also, it's obviously the right choice if you prioritize IQ and FPS over flair.

Is that the correct link? Waste of a minute, a lot of it was DLC for games that are on console or games that in no way deserve some kind of PC saviour recognition.

I never use steam anyway, DRM shite IMO. GOG or direct download for me personally but regardless can you reference actual exclusive games that are critically acclaimed? Not a bunch of news, largely repeated, and containing those known exclusives like Rocksmith, Tomb Raider, Saints Row, Lego Marvel, Assassins Creed, DC Universe, Hitman etc..

As for the cheaper route, these are digital sales. Why pass up physical media that has actual worth and can be sold if you want. As opposed to people having huge library's they have spent loads on, haven't played and are just sitting there. With hardware disparity meaning yours may or may not work and have to mess around or are forced to upgrade. Such as those ridiculous specs released for Watch Dogs originally. With multiplats given a token port to PC which tend to be more unstable, although x86 new gen should help that out at least.

If you take the cost of PS+ and retail games PC gaming is cheaper.

Ding ding. Until someone pushes a #FreeOnlinePlayOnConsoles Twitter hashtag movement, I don't think I'll be going back to consoles for a long while if ever.

Without a doubt PC. PC has the games, PC has the potentially far superior hardware, PC has the platform freedom, PC has the exclusives, PC has the superior control scheme for most games, PC has the compatibility, PC has the dirt cheap games, etc.

You must be joking, it's the exact opposite.

Its not 'the exact opposite'. There's no one way of doing it or looking at it.

Personally, I think the person had a great point and if I was asked for my opinion, I would recommend doing the same thing. PS4 *will* drop in price eventually. Until then, you can enjoy a massive library of games on your PC, including most all of the multiplatforms that are on the next-gen consoles(and all in 1080p/60fps assuming the PC is moderately decent). Then later on, when the PS4 has a worthy library of exclusives you want, then think about getting it. For me, I don't see myself getting a next-gen console for quite a while. Spending hundreds of dollars just for a few games doesn't make a lot of sense. I'll wait til I can get one for like $150 or something. Rather put my money towards upgrading my PC later on and getting an Oculus Rift or a 1440p monitor.

I'm so fucking sick of hearing this. Yes, PS4 will have some exclusives, NO, it won't have even 1/10th as many exclusives as PC does.

Most of those "PC exclusives" are small indie games though. You can hardly compare them to great games like Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, The Last of Us or Mario and Zelda games. None of those games can be played on PC, that's the problem.

PS4 now PC in 2 years unless you have a big enough PC budget to make it last 5 years running shit well.

I would wait to buy a new PC until games are mostly just made for PS4/Xb1/PC.

Those games are going to push pc hardware harder than the cross gen stuff we are going to see in 2014 for the most part.

Have to agree, it's a really poor argument.

In the long term, depending on what your purchasing habits are, PC gaming will usually be more cost effective. Exclusives exists on either platform, and arguably are more meaningful on the PC as they are often there because they aren't possible to be built/run on a closed platform.

Further to that, those exclusive are at least from my perspective, much more diverse on PC. Each to their own of course but there are better arguments for saying PS4 is the platform of choice

Are these games on the PS4? Because if we're now selectively choosing what 'great' exclusive games are, you might want to stick to the script.

Well PC it is then. I was already moving towards this direction anyway.

E8400 3.0 ghz, HD4890, 4 gifs of memory...

Get yourself an Nvidia 750 for now. Maybe get another 4GB of RAM, assuming that's DDR3.

Remember: you save money on the PC in the long run. I got the upcoming Thief game for $7.50, as opposed to the $60 it costs to pick on PS4. I picked up a code for Thief Gold for free. And PC sales generally render the cost of PS+ (where you lose games once you decide to stop paying for your subscription) worthless.

go PS4, its cheaper for the moment and will do well against pc for the next few years, and it will have exclusives. If you get a vita too you always have the remote play option too.

The PC will also have exclusives. It is traditionally the platform with the most exclusives.

The PS4 right now is the platform with the least amount of exclusives out there; it's being beaten by literally every other platform (maybe not the WiiU?). Like... anyone telling you to get one now is telling you to make a bad investment. The PS4 offerings just aren't strong. Personally, I'm looking at Infamous 3. Killzone was by all accounts a disappointment. I'm not really hearing much discussion about other exclusives. And remember, "don't worry, they'll announce games at E3!" became "don't worry, they'll announce games at Gamescom!" became "don't worry, they'll announce games at PAX!" became "don't worry, they'll announce games at TGS!" and... that never really materialized. Sony, right now, is like Microsoft has been the past few years. Sure, we have hints and rumors of upcoming game (oh, another Uncharted, oh boy)... and maybe DriveClub will come one day... but beyond that, things are looking sparse.

The PC's gotchu bro. The only thing you'd be missing out on is Destiny.

Are these games on the PS4? Because if we're now selectively choosing what 'great' exclusive games are, you might want to stick to the script.

It's funny, 'cause I read that post like "hahahaha, does your PC have backwards compatibility, like the PS4? Does your PC have the ability to play Nintendo exclusives, like the PS4?! I thought not."

Which amuses me because the PC can do both of those things, and the PS4 can not.

I was struggling with this one myself, recently, when I got my tax return. I had to stop and question WHY I wanted the PS4. In all honesty, the only things I could come up with were InFamous and the fact the system is new and shiny.

But really, beyond InFamous, I found there wasn't much in the near future I was really hungering for that were exclusives.

So I took the money and upgraded my graphics card on my PC and now I'm golden for the next few years.

If it was having to choose between the PS4 and building the PC ground up from scratch again, it would have been a bit more difficult, if only from the money standpoint. But once you have a solid PC, it's just a matter of upgrading a small thing here and there every few years.

Every sentence of this post is awful, but if this is a "problem" then consoles are no better.

Can you play Mario on a PS4? Resogun on a Wii U?

I'd say PS4 now while it's the hotness and then get a new PC in a couple years when the devs are squeezing more out of PS4 and you can get a rig that blows it away for the second half of the gen.

He knew better, seems like it was just baiting to derail this thread.

ps3 came out 2006 and it still plays ac3. how many of you pc gamers still use a pc from 2006 and never had to buy any parts? op is worried about cost. he'll have to buy pc parts down the.line before this gen ends.

I still have a Q6600 and my I don't have some brand new GPU either just a HD 5770. I play games at 1920x1200 too.

you either have a crippling inability to process information or you're so far dug in to your war trench that we'd have to call in james cameron to get you out. either way, i hope you can enjoy your time confined to a very small percentage of what gaming has to offer and don't let your penchant for misinformation infect reasonable people's decisions.

The PS4, obviously. On PC you have to spend hours rejiggering drivers and doodads to even play a game. Plus, the PC doesn't have any exclusives, such as the award-winning Killzone: Shadow Fall or Infamous: Second Son, games you'll only find on the Sony PlayStation 4. And with the insane value of PlayStation Plus, you get a library of free, incredible titles at the press of a button, meaning the Sony PlayStation 4 is a much better value. The fragmented, confusing and expensive PC ecosystem just can't compete with the PlayStation family.

It all comes down to the games.

1. Are their PS4 games you MUST PLAY RIGHT NOW?

2. Are their PC games you MUST PLAY RIGHT NOW that you can't already play on your system?

If the answer to both questions are NO, then don't get EITHER. Just wait.

Believe it or not, a 2009/2010 PC can actually handle today's games very well with minimal settings adjustments and still get to 1080p/60fps. You don't need ULTRA/INSANE/EXTREME settings on your PC to get a very nice looking game at 1080p/60fps. All you have to to is lower a couple settings here and there.

I ran the Titanfall Beta on my GTX 460 and a i7 920 CPU (2010 build) with just a couple settings tweaks and it STILL looks better than what the Xbox One can give you.

People rush to upgrade their PCs or buy the newer consoles and then realize there's either nothing to play yet or they could have played the same games on their older systems just fine.

IMO - if you're not sure, WAIT.

Are these games on the PS4? Because if we're now selectively choosing what 'great' exclusive games are, you might want to stick to the script.

My point is those ones are only on consoles. Dozens other exclusives like MGS or every future Naughty Dog game will be on consoles and not on PC.

My point is with PC you will always be a second class citizen for publishers due to piracy. Look, we're still waiting for GTA 5 PC version, and tons of other games like Red Dead were never released.

EA sports games don't even get the latest version of the engine (Ignite) on PC. It's not about the hardware, it's about the games you can play on it and when.

And that's not without adding everything else bothering you when going PC : driver problems, configuration issues (I don't want to deal with INI files when I come back from work, I just want to play now), not being able to play with a controller without being destroyed by KB / mouse players, bad / unoptimized ports, having to upgrade every 2 years, Windows issues...

There's a reason why PS4 broke sales records, it's powerful enough, very easy too use and it has the best games day one.

You save money on PC games, you can't resale though, its always tide to some DRM.
I have a shit-ton of Steam games I probably never going to touch again. I'd rather pay more and have the option to do whatever I want with my old games.

what Sony press release did you rip this out of?

I have had no driver problems in a year of owning my PC because I keep it up to date and clean.

I have never had to change an ini file for any reason either.

If you spend a decent amount of money and plan your purchase well you will not need to upgrade in two years.

The main decision here is if you want to play at a desk or on your couch.
