In concurrent players, can DOTA 2 beat out LoL when it launches?

Whenever DOTA 2 goes officially live do you think it has the potential to beat out LoL in terms of concurrent players? I'm not necessarily saying this will happen day 1 but at some point.

Sure why not, nobody would have guessed LOL would have grown so much. But really who cares.

It would have to become like 10x more popular than it currently is which I just don't see happening. It's not like getting into the Dota 2 "beta" is hard at this point. Everyone I know that plays the game has +10 unused invites in their inventory, or you could just buy a key from the store for $20 or whatever it is if you don't have any friends.

It'll make a huge difference, still kind of surprised to see people thinking like this. Game isn't even launched in, by far, it's biggest region.

i'm sure it's possible. they're gonna need to dumb down the game some to reach a broader audience. Dota2 is a bit too complex in the items + minion kill parts

It's not complex at all. You can configure the game to let you deny with just about any button. Most people think it's complex because they have been playing an ez mode moba that makes a lot of factors in dota moot, obsolete, or non existent.

The item shop is pure suck though.

It won't beat it out when it launches but I think it will eventually. I'd like to see how much of LoL's daily population is made up of non-Chinese people because then we might get a better idea of the situation at the moment (as the large majority of Dota 2's population is non-Chinese).

DotA can definitely compete with LoL, one strength DotA has is the fact that all champions are already unlocked, one thing is for sure that both are a damn sight better than HoN.

Your average joe gamer who spent time learning the heroes and money on skins won't move out.

Kinda like those who are stuck in WoW for so long and won't budge.

I know that the Chinese love DOTA and remembered hearing that one Chinese server had over a billions games played in one year compared to LoL who has over a billion games to date. If Valve can get Dota 2 to the masses in China, it'll overtake LoL easy. Just not at launch.

I think it will be a battle but I think Dota 2 is the better game by far and Valve have the ability to create better hooks for players than Riot.

The main ace in the hole Dota 2 has is the fact ALL the 100+ heroes are free to everybody and they only charge for cosmetics.

Having all the heroes is crutial to the game and each are completely unique with unique abilities.

In LoL you have to unlock or pay for Champions which they are going to HAVE to change when Dota 2 gives them competition and alot of the champions seem to have very similar feels.

I tried LoL I really did but it didnt grab me at all but Dota 2 wow it's just in it's own class of game.

The DotA 2 community will be smaller, but it'll be like the way the Mac userbase numbers are compared to PC userbase numbers; not dominant, but sizable, steady, and growing.

They don't have to and they never will.

I'd like to see performance increased on low-end machines before I can say that it'll beat LoL.

A couple of people that I actually play LoL with can't even properly run DOTA 2 at proper framerates, so I'd like to see an improvement in optimization.

Something tells me LoL will be able to run on the next generation iPads.
Anyone who penetrates that market with a decent control scheme will gg for sure.

The only thing I'd loved to see on an ipad for moba's would be an in game spectating client. Porting the game over to tablets would require a significant overhaul in the fundamental game mechanics.

I don't see it happening. LoL is easier to pick up and play. I also like dominion too much. 30-40 minute matches just aren't fun all the time, they take too long.

Dominion is really great, I'm not a big MOBA person but Dominion pulls me in once in awhile.

I read somewhere that dota 1 had higher concurrent users at its peak than lol had 2-3 months ago. This is ofcourse with China, so when dota 2 launches the gap will be smaller considerably.

Thing with DotA 1 was that it was available everywhere in China in LAN cafes etc., because Warcraft III: TFT was pirated so much. It's going to take a long time for DotA2 to get that kind of penetration, especially because DotA 1 could also be run on really shitty comps, unlike DotA 2. That's where League has DotA 2 beat currently, League is runnable on shitty comps while DotA 2 still requires a somewhat modern computer.

Definitely not a launch. I guess it is not impossible at some point down the road if China really grasps onto the game though. I think 1M concurrent subscribers would be a more reasonable target. The game is just now getting to Skyrim's concurrent record on Steam despite being entirely multiplayer and easily available for free to people who are determined to get into the beta.

A lot of the people who will eventually download/try the game don't care enough about DOTA 2 right now to track down a key, so the concurrent number will go up quite a bit at launch when all roadblocks are removed. However, I definitely don't see a 10x increase in users compared to the numbers DOTA 2 is currently posting.

Not at launch, obviously. Although I wouldn't be too surprised if DOTA 2 hits a million concurrent at launch. I also wouldn't be surprised if it over-takes LoL within five years of launch (which on reflection, isn't really saying much). Although that mainly depends on how China reacts to it.
