Actually, in the case of TF2, because of the writer's strike Bay bullshitted a story outline on his own without any writers just so he could start production. When the strike ended, the script writers simply worked many of his ideas into a shooting script. It explains a lot of the.... problems in the lack of coherence in the movie.

I think they were trying to tie in natural directing talent, not strictly writing.

I'd say The Prestige has more "truth of humanity" in it than Inception, but Inception has some very interesting concepts regarding ideas and obsession. But no "truths", or if they are, they're not fully developed.

Yes, he has a very good point in that particular perspective. Reading up too much about production problems, or arguments behind the scenes, could definitely influence our reception of a movie and create a bias before we even watch it.
