Armond White's defense of TF2 has just made him my favorite reviewer. Sorry guys. He's right.

Those transformers! They loom over us! They're just epic! Scale! Michael Bay! Scale! Human experience!

*blows up*

They picked a horrible topic to tie his review of Transformers to Christopher Nolan. Michael Bay has very little to do with the actual writing process of a film, so it's ludicrous to compare the two on a level that's almost entirely dependent on that aspect of film making.

Actually, in the case of TF2, because of the writer's strike Bay bullshitted a story outline on his own without any writers just so he could start production. When the strike ended, the script writers simply worked many of his ideas into a shooting script. It explains a lot of the.... problems in the lack of coherence in the movie.

I think they were trying to tie in natural directing talent, not strictly writing.

And in regards to dream ideas...Nolan is OBVIOUSLY heavily influenced by other writers/movies before him. But he made it his own.

"Well, is it?" :lol

Avatar relies on cliches, Transformers 2 is classic Americana in its approach to technology.

Oh, brother.
Micheal Bay trends on ground no one else dare walk upon. Cameron plays it safe.

was just looking at some of White's quotes on RT from other films.

" It reexamines assumptions of good and evil—morality tale vs, trite entertainment—by confronting the hideous compromises people make with social conventions and their own desperation."

- Jonah Hex

" Cheerful and surprisingly heartfelt."

- Grown Ups

" Cholodenko’s films always falter through their obvious, self-congratulatory point-making."

- The Kids Are All Right

" Iron Man 2 is exactly what critics and audiences deserve following the celebration of that awful, dung-hued first film."

-Iron Man 2

Leterrier certainly shows a better sense of meaningful, economic narrative than the mess that Peter Jackson made of the interminable, incoherent Lord of the Rings trilogy."

- Clash of the Titans

" Shutter Island is a perfect example of Hollywood excess: It demonstrates a once significant filmmaker decaying into a big budget, poorly-motivated hack."

- Shutter Island

:lol

Holy shit!

But...aren't the other critics just SHILLS?

I stepped away from the comp. What did he say?

Michael Bay understands scale and knows "the youth experience" as well as visual rhythm. I think these things are conveyed in Transformers 1. Not so much T2.

What deeper truth of humanity was Nolan ultimately trying to uncover within Inception? I'd argue that thematically, Inception is fairly frivolous in that regard.

In his defense that Iron Man comment was hilarious and Shutter Island is pretty shit. I wouldn't call Scorcese a hack but he's become a boring director now.

What the fucking fuck is this?

Armond White and Rex Reed are officially on my "critic list of fail."

I'd say The Prestige has more "truth of humanity" in it than Inception, but Inception has some very interesting concepts regarding ideas and obsession. But no "truths", or if they are, they're not fully developed.

No. He said there is no "music video style" editing. Which is true. It's generalizing.

I wonder if they turned red when he called them out on that. That was like a father talking down to his sons. Actually, this entire interview has felt like that. :lol

You heard it hear first. Production reports are HARMFUL. DVD/BDs should throw out all those extra features NOW! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!

You have to admit, though, that this kind of production scrutiny impacting reviewing has a negative impact on pure criticism.

Armond White is kind of destroying these guys. Why the fuck are they talking about bullshit? They should focus on Inception and bring up specific points.

Yes, he has a very good point in that particular perspective. Reading up too much about production problems, or arguments behind the scenes, could definitely influence our reception of a movie and create a bias before we even watch it.
