Incredibles 2: Brad Bird to Direct, New Artwork

I hope this is a gooder ... despite the poster I also kind of hope there is a massive time skip forward. Doing a story about the kids being adults in a now superhero friendly world and the parents being geriatric but still super powered feels like it could write itself. BUT if they do simply have a direct sequel I've got faith in Brad , I've liked literally everything the guy has directed (even tomorrow land) so here's hoping it all works out.

I think people need to pump the breaks on it being a direct sequel just because of the concept art. There's several reasons why it could still be set further after the first movie:

1) There are other Supers in the background. In the first movie, well, there aren't. I won't spoil why for those who haven't seen it.

2) Their house is shown in the bottom right. Again, not saying anything for those who haven't seen it, but at the very least in the sequel their house would look different.

3) I seriously, seriously doubt they would show off the first look at a redesigned aged-up Parr family with a very stylized piece of concept art. To me this was something that was created specifically for D23 to just be like "Hey, Incredibles 2! Look it's all your favorite characters!" If they have redesigned the characters and aged them up, they would show them off with a proper picture from the movie, not heavily stylized concept art.

4) Underminer's drill could literally just be there because the artwork has a bunch of stuff from the first movie in it. In fact, the only thing in this art that ISN'T in the first movie is the raccoon and of course the II logo.

Of course, it could totally be set seconds after the first movie. Or it could open seconds after the first movie ends, have them battle as a team, and then do a time jump to show where they are several years later. I just think it's a little premature to assume they're having it take place immediately after the first movie just because of this art piece.

Considering most of the people who worked on the first film are set to be returning I'm pretty confident in it.

Not only that but they specifically waited to make a sequel for it until Brad wanted to and had a good enough idea for it. They could have easily pumped out sequels to it if they didn't care or if other directors wanted to take a crack at it but they waited for Brad so it'd be legit.

NOW LET THE MAN MAKE RAY GUNN DAMMIT

It taking place only a year after the first one is still "right after the first one", when the expectation is a real time age up like Toy Story 3.

That's very true, I didn't realize anyone was thinking it'd be around that timeframe. It sounded to me like people thought it would either be an immediate sequel (picking up like literally right where the last one ended) or something set several years into the future. But yes you're right that they could do a "one year later" type of time jump without having to significantly change any of the character's designs.

I hope not, though. I'm in the camp that thinks it would be cool to see the family all at different ages. Especially if the concept art is to be taken at face value and a bunch of supers return.

The Incredibles 2 is set a minute after the first film.

IGN caught up with Disney Pixar chief John Lasseter at D23, where he confirmed that The Incredibles 2 will pick up right where the first one ended.

"It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on," said Lasseter, who specified that only "a minute" will have passed between films. "It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that's where start this movie."

This strikes me as a really bad idea, personally.

The game did that already!

It seems obvious to me that's just going to be the action opening before the credits. I expect everything after the setpiece will be an all new story.

Why?

I like it.

Because I think it would be better to allow the characters to age up as a means of telling a new kind of story centered a different kind of family dynamic as opposed to presenting us with exactly the same kind of family unit as the first film. It could be nice to see a new kind of story about how the family dynamic changes when the kids get older, perhaps even with Violet and Dash moving out of the house to go off to university or whatever...perhaps with the family learning to re-connect as a unit during a new adventure.

In family films, we never really get to see the kind of family's where the children are allowed to actually grow into adults, and how the parents might have to find a way to deal with that as their children become more and more distant. I thought that would be much more interesting territory to explore for the sequel, how even if your family has grown up and you've become disconnected from each others lives...you're still a family who ultimately have each other's backs. Plus, the voice-actors are going to be sounding noticeably older anyway, with some characters perhaps needing to be re-cast out-right, so in that sense, setting the sequel only about a minute after the first comes across as even more jarring as opposed to doing a time-skip where the characters would be allowed to mature.

Also, we'd get to see Jack-Jack as an older child or teenager as he would learn how to gain greater control over his powers. Who wouldn't want to see that?

Oh no...

It better be just for the intro or the beginning of the movie.

I feel that's almost certain.

I'd imagine it will be kind of similar to the first Incredibles, which had the Bomb Voyage/train set piece and wedding at the beginning, followed by a montage and then a substantial time jump.

I'm expecting it to mirror the first film. That started with heroes in their prime and then skipped ahead to when there were no more heroes, so I'm guessing this will start with the hero resurgence and skip ahead to a new age of heroes.

Poetry etc.

My issue is that it seems like a waste to not jump ahead ten or so years, to match the audience.

Agreed. Hopefully, Brad Bird knows what he's doing.

It stuns me how many people I've seen on this forum and other places insist that The Incredibles 2 had to happen because the first "ended on a cliffhanger." It absolutely did not. The Underminer's sole purpose is to show that the family has fully re-entered the world of superheroes. In this movie he shouldn't have any more involvement than a cold open where he gets quickly beaten down.

If it took them this long to get this project underway, I'm hoping it's because they waited for the right story, and if the right story is having it take place right after... I'm on board.

Dude I'm so stoked for this, I'm glad it's actually happening. The Incredible is easily my favorite Pixar movie.

Finally the best pixar franchise gets the sequel it always deserved. Like 3 fucking car movies before an incredibles sequel da fuk?

it's too bad pixar's so bad these days

Except that's complete hyperbole. They aren't "so bad these days." They're just in an up and down period. No studio can keep up the level of consistency they had for literally 15 freaking years forever.

Yes, Good Dinosaur was disappointing and Cars 3 is what it is. But Finding Dory was fantastic and Inside Out is one of the best films they've ever put out. Coco looks great too.
