| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Absolute Drift - Free demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
Donut.gif
http://www.indiedb.com/games/absolute-drift
Absolute Drift offers top-down minimalist gameplay, all about the art of skidding sideways through the tightest turns and hair-breath gaps. And you need every ounce of precision when playing Absolute Drift, as you slide around corners and turns with barely inches to spare.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Secrets of Grindea - Free demo (PC)
DefensiveCrispCoqui.gif
http://www.secretsofgrindea.com/
Beautifully animated, charming visuals and a light hearted story that's clearly drawing inspirations from the Chrono Triggers and Secret of Manas of the world. The game looks great, has some good humor, intriguing mechanics, loads of upgrade mechanics, loot, satisfying combat, incredibly sweet pixel art animations and is just a blast to play.
Drawing inspiration from both legendary tactical turn-based games and classic heist movies alike, the goal of The Masterplan is to put together the right crew, get the right equipment, and finally plan and execute the biggest heist ever. It's tense, looks and sounds great and has a really well executed heist feel to it. The feeling of satisfaction when you pull off the perfect run is great, and the feeling of shit hitting the fan is even better.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes be very valuable.
Reposting my Spatials impressions since they are otherwise lost on the last 12 hours of the old thread and the game deserves some attention even though its not in a perfect state yet:
OP impression special: The Spatials
The Good: Impressive effort and already way more complete than Spacebase 9 ever will be with plenty of interesting sub systems and rewarding overall campaign progress. It also mixes some ideas from other games (4X comes to mind) and creates its own interpretation of the genre, which is rather refreshing.
The Bad: Still in early access, so its still missing plenty of sub systems, which currently break the actual game progress in a way that makes the game very unchallenging.
The combat is a bit wonky, uninspired and boring, which is fortunately not a huge focus atm.
The Outlook: This is looking damn good. It already has enough sub systems to allow for an engaging play session. If they manage to make the combat a bit more interesting (which I dont know whether they might plan that) and add the remaining sub systems (very good chance of that happening), this will easily rank among the better games in the genre.
Basic Gameplay:
The gameplay is basically divided into 2 parts - building and combat. Lets start with building:
Fh9PZu4.jpg
The biggest hurdle currently is, that the game doesnt have any actual tutorial. There is a comprehensive ingame manual that explains the game mechanics, but reading through that is hardly a good first impression. In the beginning I was a bit lost and and failed to see the point of the game, since I missed many mechanics. For a basic understanding, you need to know the overall playing structure: Build your base - Finish missions - earn ressources - Build Planetary ressource mines, and repeat.
Another source of confusion is that the needs system of the units isnt fully implemented yet, meaning you have no actual urge to build anything since nothing happens if the units hover at 0 food or 0 sleep. It is clear that they havent implemented these features yet to allow for easy testing of other game features, which they currently want feedback for.
Once I understood that, I started tinkering around with what I can do in the game currently, and was surprised to see how much depth they are going for here. This is a small part of the tech tree and the equipment of one character:
pxDNX1e.jpg
2llON33.png
That intrigued me, so I dug a bit into it and tried to figure out how the game is meant to be played and build some basic structures in my home base.
1. Living rooms, beds, decoration.
2. Kitchen, work preparation station
3. storage, storage containers
4. Metal works, work shop... wait. Why can I not build anything in the metal workshop? Hmmm, apparently I need aluminum. Where do I get that?
Then I figured out that the game is not only taking place in my base/my planet, but I can zoom out to the galaxy map and make missions and visit merchants on other planets. Those missions give you a set amount of ressources, and might enable you to mine that planet for a steady income of ressources. This means you either do a mission which gives you aluminum or you do a bounty, which will give you mining permits for that planet, which in turn could give you a steady income of aluminum. The caveat here is that bounties havent been implemented yet, which means that you can currently mine a planet with 2 clicks as they are considered yours to mine from the get go.
Once you have more ressources, you can unlock more options in the tech tree, which in turn allows you to build more objects, which in turn requires more ressources.
It all works surprisingly well, and I love the aspect of making missions on planets to build steady mine buildings, raising my overall income with plenty of building options. I cant judge the balancing on this since there is no real fail state atm without the unit needs.
Onto the combat:
SC1sZWX.jpg
The missing unit needs and the instant mining are a problem for the current gameplay progression, but these are omissions that are already being worked on. However,I have no clue whether the combat might see some improvements and that is so painfully simple that it drags down the overall impression of the game a bit even though you dont spend that much time with it currently. The only thing you do here is left clicking to move your units and keeping your left mouse button pressed to shoot. What you'll do the most is walking after fleeing enemies to kill them, which is rather boring. A simple change, like allowing to control multiple squads would improve this a lot since there really is no strategy to this part atm.
Unlike other Early Access games, this game already has a sizeable amount of content and features, but also unlike other Early Access games, its not really "enjoyable" to play yet, as there really is no progress with some crucial elements missing. As it is, its a cute sandbox, but a very, very, promising one.
Highly recommended with promising future potential, be aware that the game is still missing a lot atm though.
Also, I need to play some more SanctuaryRPG. If anyone played it more than I did, I would appreciate some more in depth impressions, my first few sessions with it were very positive.
On a totally random note, who's seeing Interstellar this week? Think I might have to get into the mood with some FTL and RimWorld
I know it's not from this month but my impressions with:
Lovely Planet is so good! I haven't played a twitch FPS before (does the original HL count?) but I'm really enjoying my time spent with the game. The levels are short but are focused on you finishing them in the shortest time possible while defeating all the baddies. The gameplay is fast and precise and the lack of crosshair add a bit more of difficult to the game, and while it can be frustrating being hit by one of these shooting cubes or missing an apple I did find myself running on previous levels trying to improve my time.
From what little info I could get it was made all (except the music) by one person, an India based developer but I have no more info about he/she.
Just doing my bit to help reach page 2.
Although on a more on topic point I did have a go on Chipset-0 and that seemed fairly enjoyable. The puzzles had a good difficulty ramp up which a lot of puzzles games don't get right and I enjoyed the darker undertones of the entire game. The robot itself is a little unpleasant to control, especially with the wall climbing but overall it seemed to be well worth your 10-15 minutes.
Edit 2
Just saw this on RPS - sorry if it's been picked up before
INTERLOPER - PC
http://interlopergame.com/
Interloper is an intense real-time strategy game about alien tribes vying for control over a lush, newly discovered world. A peaceful densely vegetated land turns into a volatile battlefield of territorial tug-of-war. Claiming domain provides strategic advantages for the power hungry tribes. Challenge other players in competitive online multiplayer matches to spread your tribe’s influence.
The description text is kind of flowery. It looks to be a super stripped down strategy game which is just about dominating area. The RPS preview compares it to Hearthstone in the way it parses down a genre to its simplest parts.
Video Impressions: The Spatials
00BY11T.png
My first impressions video in a few months had quite a few issues. Some recording issues that lead to a screen area slightly moved differently from the rest of the video, and I totally didnt see that the game actually has some tactical elements for the combat (which I ranted about during the whole video). I added a small section about it at the end, but the video and impressions might seem a bit chaotic (seriously sorry if its a bit too messy, but I didnt feel like rerecording that whole thing):
http://youtu.be/H4uaSBDTnDM
Still, the video gives an early impression of what the game feels like. Just imagine ... more of everything once you played some more. I really like how the elements come together overall.
I definitely suggest keeping this game on your radar until it releases, even if I cant necessarily recommend buying it now.
Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is pretty awesome, highly recommended to anyone who even sort of liked the original. Every run I have had so far has been massively different and fun in their own way. The huge variety of new items combined with the buffing of some old, weak items really expands on the game. The technical improvements are significant as well but that should be expected for a $15 indie game.
It's really my "first" time playing the game. I have the original, but never played much due to poor performance. But Rebirth runs silky smooth, and such a fantastic and twisted experience.
BoI: Rebirth will without a doubt be on my best of 2014 list
It's so damn good. I could never get into Spelunky the way some people do, but I know I'm going to be sinking hours into Rebirth. Every playthrough is so rewarding, due to the secrets and new items you can discover.
Remembered that I wanted to check up on Painters Guild and.. no developments since May. :( Bummer.
I remember how positive you were about the development back then :/
I recently checked up on that one first person dungeon crawler RPG that one Developer mentioned here, forgot the name, but its still in active development. Should play that again sometime.
Environmental Station Alpha - Played the demo for a bit and I can say that so far it's a solid metroidvania, the space station where the game takes place offers different kind of environments and they all seems diversified, as expected from the game it has some secrets hidden (usually health tanks) so exploring the levels is rewarding. There are also upgrades for the robot and as you collect them it opens more the levels and allows you to further explore, yet talking about exploration some parts of already explored levels changes as you advanced through the game.
Highly recommended.
I just noticed that the big yearly voting is coming up in about a month, which means tons of impressions/post writing and voting and playing the great games we missed during the year. December is always so hardcore.
Oh no - so much to play!
Isaac should be coming out on PS+ soon but Steamworld Dig and Luftrausers are up and free.
I've downloaded 3 free games from the OP as well - time to get stuck in.
Correction: I meant a "month". I think we started the voting thread beginning of december last year.
I had time to sink a few hours into Rebirth yesterday, enough to beat Mom's Heart.
The graphics are nice. The pixels work, I don't find the detail is really lost at all. There is an option in the menu to smooth it out if it bothers you, but personally I like it.
The animations are smooth. So silky smooth. The entire game seems much faster than the original, likely due to higher frame rate.
The music is bang on. I thought it would be hard to out do the original, but this soundtrack is at least as good and will definitely grow on me more over time. The updated sound effects are a treat as well. I love the sound of picking up an item in the treasure room.
I've encountered quite a few new enemies. The designs fit right in with the old ones. New secret rooms, items etc. A lot of new content added to a game already overflowing with items and secrets. I've also noticed items come with brief descriptions, which are very helpful to remember what they do.
I will be trying co-op tonight, I expect it to be amazing.
Now, a couple things that I don't like.
When you enter a big room, the camera automatically moves around a bit on its own. It seems like it's trying to place you in the middle of the action, but I find it confusing. It makes it harder to fight the room and dodge.
The controls seems a bit more slippery than the original. The shitty dpad on the Xbox 360 controller is likely to blame, but I used it for the original with no problems. The issue I have is that it's quite difficult to move in a straight line. If you don't press perfect left or right, a lot of times you will move diagonally. This problem is the worst when you are trying to run around a room against the walls. If you don't run perfectly straight, you will drag against the wall. This slows you down, and it's very frustrating to take hits because of this. I'll be upgrading to a Xbone controller, I hope this helps.
You can't navigate the mini map (as far as I know). A lot of times I have to run back through the level just to see if there is a room I missed, since I can't see it on the map. I would be nice to assign one of the analog sticks to scroll through the map. This gets worse when the levels get bigger.
The options menu is quite limited. You can't rebind controls.
All in all, the complaints I have are fairly minor. This game is amazing, get it.
Quick impressions:
Absolute Drift: Absolute crap? Ok, that's harsh--it's not crap--but the physics are poorly modeled. It was an interesting little diversion in brain-training to adjust to the game's flavor of sliding and run through the tracks, but the unnatural physics eventually killed it for me. It's not even much fun for me in an arcade-y sense--it's just that wrong. More tracks and camera options would be nice in future updates, but I hope the dev spends most of his time tuning the physics. Perhaps he should seek input from people who actually slide real cars around for fun. It certainly has potential.
Hop Slide: Cute. Inventive. Would love to see more games explore nontraditional gui/interface interactions like this. The slide puzzle in one window affects the game world in the other, and the two windows themselves interact in interesting ways depending on how you arrange them. Good fun for a tiny puzzler. Found 4 letters. Gave up on the red room.
Roguelight: Great controls. Very tight and responsive. Can be quite tense at times, especially if you mismanage your arrow supply. I played it enough in one sitting to buy all the available character upgrades, after which I found myself simply running through the levels, ignoring enemies, and delving deeper and deeper until Level 7. Still haven't fully waxed that one. I feel like this game would really benefit from procedurally-generated levels as well as upgrades to find/buy within the levels that don't carry over to the next attempt (a la Spelunky). This would make the post-upgrade-maxout gameplay seem a bit more meaningful. In fact, there aren't many boxes Roguelight ticks that Spelunky doesn't also tick with more substance. I only paid $3 for Roguelight and definitely got more than enough fun out of it. I may go back and try to beat level 7 a few more times if I can ever stop playing the next game on my list.
LOVELY MUHHFUCKIN' PLANET, Y'ALL: Lovely Planet is a drug. A very good drug. Probably the best one you can get for $6. Go buy it. Do it. It's fast, frantic, fun, and frustrating. A lot like cocaine. Lovely Planet is essentially cocaine. Forever trying to shave off mere hundredths of a second. Possibly a tenth or two if I could squeeze off that last round accurately and time my jump into the beam at the same time the last baddie swallows my purple load. I just can't stop. I press the R button. I press it again. Again. AGAIN.
For gamepad. I didn't see an option to do it, hopefully I missed it.
You can rebind all controls. Just go to options > controls and pick your controller.
