Never heard of Archimedes and Wand Wars, but will pick them up. They look darn good. Also, Thumper for sure.

Some may recall that I was doing a GAF tournament for Frozen Synapse 1 a while ago. Well, turns out the developers liked the execution enough to ask me if I want to do an official tournament for them. :)

I suggested some other stuff and aside from the tournament (starting date announced later), I pushed a small contest idea for participants to create their own FS map and the winner map will be used for the FS tournament and get a FS2 Beta invite.

As I am now helping them and its not an "Gaf only" thing, I cant post a thread about it like last time, but I'd be happy about any participant. (Hey, you can win a Frozen Synapse 2 key by drawing a map :p )

Do you mean you are part of their staff as a side-job?

Not part of their staff, but I am organizing this tournament on the side for them as they asked me if I had any interest in doing another one for the whole FS community, after seeing the participation in the GAF tourney. I liked the idea to tinker around with some event ideas (like the map making contest) and see how effective my ideas are in that environment. Its relatively close to my actual job, but different projects have different requirements, so its neat to see things from another perspective.

Guess it will only be this one tournament, but I guess we'll see how this one goes and where it might go from there.

yay!

I was really hoping for it to scratch that arcade itch the way Downwell did. Excited!
The way it works is that killing enough enemies in a combo earns you a coin to buy upgrades in between levels, and that also act as continues. So if you die, but have enough coins, you can play again from that level.

Also getting hit doesn't kill you, but scatters your head, gun, and backpack, so you have to deftly leap around and on enemies to reach your stuff. You can jump on enemies to kill them like in Downwell too

Some longer Thumper impressions
Would it be hyperbole to say that Thumper is the most intense, most satisfying, and most draining test of reflexes since Super Hexagon? Much like Terry Cavanagh's infamously challenging arcade game, Thumper is equal parts simplicity and excess, easy-to-understand but challenging-to-master gameplay within a sensory overload of movement, color, and sound. If Super Hexagon was hypnotic in its shifting twisting geometric minimalism, then Thumper is 2001's mesmerizing mind@!%$ given metal life.

From the first section of its nine levels to its last hellish stage, Thumper hurls you into a kaleidoscopic tempest, your chrome beetle racing along twisting tracks and claustrophobic tunnels as eldritch beings of light and metal twist and unfurl within the void. It's a visual gut punch of an experience, that I can only imagine is enhanced to eye-bleeding levels in VR. But even with headphones and a regular screen, Thumper's intensity is peerless.

Imagine those classic inputs of a Guitar Hero or Rock Band - tap and hold to the beat at the right time - and you can grasp Thumper. Strip away the speed and visual chaos, and Thumper is as easy to understand as those games. Thump down on markers, turn and grind against the turns, hover over spikes and through rings. Even as more elements and nuances are introduced, the game remains a mechanically lean test of focus and reflex.

Success in Thumper is draining, exhausting, exhilarating. Like some cyberpunk birdcall, you answer the music's beat with every shockwave of your thumps and spraying sparks of grinds, until you're conditioned to react to each signal and tone with practiced skill. Success requires you to act on the fine line between focus and near-clairvoyant intuition, that zone and flow that the best in the genre let you enter.

Success in Thumper is tactile and physical in ways that few games can tout. You feel every thump, every slam into a turn, every missed beat. Your fingers hurt, you feel your heart thumping in your chest, your vision is locked on the road ahead, you twist and duck in sync with the serpentine track. Thumper is a chemical reaction in game form; every action has a reaction, that flares and explodes and flashes and shatters in response.

I've never been able to get into the music/rhythm genre. Even my favorite - Crypt of the Necrodancer - is enjoyed more for its clever roguelike design than its music game elements. But that's only a testament to Thumper's masterful design and audiovisual hellscape. It's one of those special games that can cross genre lines and even appeal to those who wouldn't normally be interested. Moving to the rhythm has never been this relentless and satisfying.

Some longer Thumper impressions

I played the demo on PSVR yesterday, its very good and really intense in VR. One little thing where I disagree though, its pretty much in all regards a typical rhythm game. I kinda get where your Superhexagon comment comes from, but rhythm games had those elements for over a decade (the hard/insane modes of rhythm games have been.... well... insane). I really like it (and I love rhythm games in general), but there really isnt too much difference between Thumper and Amplitude for example, aside from Thumper being a bit more streamlined and minimalistic, which might have triggered those hexagon comparisons. Oh and, admittedly, Thumper has a more oppressive feeling due to the background, that is really, really well done, but that is more aeasthetics than difference in mechanics.
And yeah, after playing all PSVR demos yesterday, Thumper is one of the 3 games I will probably pick up now. There are some more games that I am interested in, but they reaaaally could use a pricedrop.

That "is Spelunky the best procedurally generated game" got me back into roguelikes hard.

Between Invisible Inc releasing on iPad, Cogmind getting a major new update, learning about this cool vampire roguelike coming soon, and getting back into Dwarf Fortress for real this time, it's been roguelike heaven

Golden Krone Hotel is a gothic horror roguelike. Fight vampires with sunlight or become a vampire yourself and sneak in the shadows. Combines classic turn-based combat with dynamic lighting, an innovative potion system, and fast paced gameplay.

Totally had forgotten that MegaSphere was on Early Access.

Totally looks trippy as hell from that trailer

Have we heard anything about when MegaSphere will leave Early Access???

ULTRAWORLD EXODUS is free on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/331580

It's a relaxing first-person exploration game, with a really strong abstract art style. The story dabbles in existentialism. Plus, you have a camera and can take all kinds of great pictures with different filters too.

It was recently nominated for this year's IndieCade Festival. The developer, James Beech, also paints some cool abstract art that he posts on Twitter: https://twitter.com/neonserpent

I played it back when it was just ULTRAWORLD, before it was expanded upon, and really enjoyed it. (I generally don't enjoy exploration games, but had to give it a try on art style alone.) Others were less impressed and called it pretentious.

At zero dollars, it's definitely worth a look.

For Europeans, and mostly for French people I guess, there are some cool talks planned for IndieCade Europe in Paris next month.

Check the agenda here: http://europe.indiecade.com/?page_id=832&lang=en

Keynotes: Matt Nava, Rami Ismail, Luke Crane, Michel Ancel, Zoe Quinn.

Live plays of their games by devs Matt Nava, dev of Niche game, and dev of Santa Ragione (1st day). Live play of Future Unfolding and Psychonauts VR (2nd day). Future Unfolding is one of the games that I am most curious about for next year.

As an indie enthusiast and as a long-time gamer, I think I will attend the conference in English, although there are cool stuff going on in another amphitheatre in French, and workshops for devs.

Recently played through The Bunker and really enjoyed it. Had a surprisingly good, unique story and was overall well done.

It's pretty light on gameplay elements and with a playtime of about two hours very short, though, so €20 is a rather steep asking price all things considered. Best to wait for a Steam sale or two to pick this up.

I'm waiting for the iPad version. I wouldn't be surprised if that'll be like $5

I watched a lady LP play Space Funeral and I swear to god I have never heard a battle theme that is so good (One-Eighty-One) (besides Persona 4)

I heard thecatalmites is making another game called "Magic Wand", Has anyone heard if that game will coming to Steam or not?

Catching up on some older indies.

Infested Planet is really good and not AT ALL the game I thought it was going to be - it's a lot slower and more tactical, I was expecting some twin stick shooter type action.

Also - Devil Daggers. So I played a bunch last night and got to the top of my friends leaderboard (not that much of a feat, only 5 friends have it) but man, that game is bananas. I made it to like 110k score and then watched the replay of the guy who's top.... wow.

So he was doing stuff I didn't even know you could do - rocket jumping, bunny hopping, special abilities! I'd normally complain stuff like that isn't signposted but it's nice how obscure everything is.

Two of my favorites there. How far did you get into Infested Planet? The closest thing to it is probably the Creeper World games, there's this push-and-pull to battles where you're setting up beachheads and whatnot to carve out safety. A single squad against thousands of mutating aliens, the RTS action can be get really intense

And Devil Daggers was a side project from the devs working on Spire, so that makes me even more excited for how good Spire's movement and action will be

Question: If a game has been released in one platform, and re-releases in another, appears in this type of posts?

Mini Metro released on iOS today, and playing it for review, the game finally clicked for me. I hadn't been able to get into it on PC, but now I realize what the game is. It's like a SpaceChem or that game's ilk: all about managing efficiency and optimizing.
