Alright! Apparently enough people liked the march thread to allow for a second round of the monthly Indie Games thread series. This time I'll leave out the informational tidbit about dev updates, Kickstarter Progress etc, because frankly, people didnt seem to care that much about it. Maintaining this thread takes up a lot time already, so I needed to reevaluate how to go about that. The thread now contains the stuff mentioned above, and I think thats the format upcoming threads will aim for, if no one complains. Feedback appreciated however.

One thing that the first thread already showed rather clearly, was that there seems to be a small community growing from these threads. This is really, really awesome to see and I want to thank all the users that actually take their time to check out games and post back. This also makes this endeavor fun for me, since I dont need to think with which nonsense I can now bump the thread again!

This month, we'll also include some contests for the first time, to offer another incentive to post and talk. Additionally, we will now also have a voting on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for march can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These are the best games from the march thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the march thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

1. Papers, Please! - Free (PC)
jfEcLam0mFhXu.png

http://dukope.com/#ppl
Unsurprisingly #1. This communist paperwork simulator convinced many with originality and a harsh commentary on the everyday life of an immigration officer in the fictional and highly communist country of Arstotzka.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Factorio - €9,99/ Free Demo (PC, Mac Linux)
jbokxWtionCti2.png
https://www.factorio.com/
My personal Indie Game lovechild of March. Its a production chain management simulation with some tower defense elements thrown in. Its not as complicated as it sounds, but is loads of fun to those who give it a try. I'll predict it now, this game will land in my GOTY 2013 Top 5. Everyone should check out the Demo. YES, YOU TOO. EVEN IF SPACECHEM SEEMS TOO DAUNTING!
3. Kentucky Route Zero - $24,99 (PC)
jn1VipIhA9XuP.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/231200
Beautiful and engaging adventure game with an incredible amount of polish and style. Unfortunately, a bit expensive still, but this is definitely a game Indie Game Lovers will need to turn to at one point.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. Gorogoa - Free (PC, Mac)
jsqocPbFVUd3F.png

Inventive, captivating, refreshing. This is how to reinvent and revitalize a genre.

5. The Sea will claim everything - $10 (PC)

About half of all of the available games for that month have been voted vor. This shows that the games had a pretty big variety and a high quality. I was very glad to see that the votes didnt only drop on a few selected games. Check out the remaining entries as well, which contain even more noteworthy games from last months thread.

A Nation of Wind - Free (PC)
7660856110_796f4301ee_z.jpg

http://nationofwind.tumblr.com/download

An independently developed genrebending PC Game featuring Arena Shooter and Real Time Strategy elements with a lovely artstyle. I just tried it on Desura for a few minutes but noticed pretty fast that I'll need a bit more time for it. Anyone here tried it and could write up some impressions?

Alter Ego: Dreamwalker - $2,99/ Free Demo (Windows, Linux)
jLW2aqJ7zkXsq.png

http://www.retrosouls.net/?page_id=704

AlterEgo is a multi-level, platform game where you navigate around platforms, obstacles and monsters to collect jumping pixels. The twist is that you move two characters parallel and you can switch between them at any time to avoid obstacles or grab coins. Its a sequel to the free Alter Ego, which you can grab here: http://www.retrosouls.net/?page_id=614

Atum - Free (PC)
3R5jmwpZR6WFV2Izm69w%2BIGF_Submission_Screenshot02_450.jpg

http://atumgame.com/

In some ways it's similar to The Stanley Parable, but instead doing a game about game by experimenting with its narrative structure, this project changes the way how the player interacts with the interface. If you like Gorogoa and previously mentioned TSP give it a try - it's not as good as these, but the concept has a great potential.

BroForce - Free Alpha (PC)
broforce.jpg

http://www.freelives.net/?p=225

Sidescrolling Coop Contra-style shoot em up with a great art style and destructible environments. You only have 1 life, and once you are dead, your character switches to another character archetype with a different weapon. This thing is quite frantic and due to the 1 hit kill also surprisingly exciting. This is a Bro game people should check out this month. Local coop too.

Bloomfairy - $5/ Free Demo (PC)
bloomfairy_1_zps2963f9e1.png

http://www.purplescape.com/bloomfairy

A rather relaxing "action" game which starts you off by finishing levels in which you grow seeds to plants by "activating" them, which is really nice to look at thanks to the lovely pixelart and animations. You then earn points, with which you can buy over 350 seeds to plant in your own garden. The controls take some getting used to, but someone should dig deeper into what this offers and report back.

Cart Life - Freeware/$5 for extended version (PC)
v15.png

http://www.richardhofmeier.com/cartlife/

A Retail Simulation, which showcases the lives of street vendors. This game is one of the most memorable games recently. The intertwining genres of simulation and adventure about the life of a man works flawlessly. I suppose most people arent giving this a proper look since it has the "sim" genre attached to it, but its truly marvellous. You wont play anything like this anytime soon again.

Clairvoyance - $5 during the Beta (PC, Mac, Linux)
skarmavbild-2012-10-12-kl-21-04-02_zps411493a4.png

http://www.gameofclairvoyance.com/

Basically Frozen Synapse meets RoboRally. It's asynchronous, semi-turn based. I highly recommend clicking the link and checking out some gameplay videos.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! - $8,99/ Free Demo (PC)
screenshot118.png

http://www.desura.com/games/cook-serve-delicious

Cook, Serve, Delicious is an arcade-hardcore restaurant sim, one of the few in it’s genre that gives the players total control over where they want to take their restaurant. To do that, you’ll start with a few thousand dollars and twenty foods to choose from to put on your menu, as well as a host of restaurant equipment and more. Nearly everything is unlocked from the start of the game for you to purchase; this is your restaurant, and you must figure out the best strategy to get that restaurant packed with satisfied customers.

Darkout - $14,99 in Beta (PC, Linux)
Ocean_Cave.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/darkout

A 2D side-scrolling builder, with a Pitch Black twist. Digging, crafting, placing objects and building in general all grant you research points, making it quite easy to advance early on. The lighting system in the game is quite incredible, enemies only seem to be able to spawn in darkness, and require you to damage them with light to take down a shield they have. Full impressions: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=51789030&postcount=858

Door Kickers - $7,99 (PC)
jbfAKagF3ZlvvJ.jpg

http://inthekillhouse.com/

Real time tactics game that simplifies Frozen Synapse to a more easily playable format. The current version doesnt have a ton of depth, but it shows a lot of promise. I recommend watching a gameplay video to see whether the simplification of the formula is up your alley.

Driftmoon - $14,99/ Free Demo (PC)
Driftmoon_Moon_Island_and_Wolves.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/driftmoon/images/driftmoon-moon-island

It seems a little odd and janky and it looks like a Net Yaroze game. But it is filled with a great level of personality and the way your character sprouts lines about the goings on really helps give the game a lot of life. If you are an top down RPG and adventure game fan and want to play both those genres in the same game then check it out. Tis rather good. Also insane level of modding support.

Dungeon Hearts - $2,99 (PC)
jRiyubanSkL60.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/229520/

A very fun looking puzzle/RPG hybrid that released end of march. Pretty neat idea that you have 4 different heroes, based on the classic RPG classes that level up to unlock new skills to affect the game. Its not that expensive and made by a Gaffer, so give it a whirl!

Freedom Planet - Free Alpha (PC)
Freedom-Planet-Screenshot.png

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/galaxytrail/freedom-planet-high-speed-platform-game

An homage to Genesis Sonic games. The thing is, I already think it's kind of more playable than baseline Sonic games, as they've made a few design choices that separate it from them but actually make it more engaging in my opinion. Check out the demo, which basically works as a free alpha.

Gearscape - Free Beta (PC)
directlink_BGE-F0cCcAAeo0E.jpg

http://www.subvertgames.com/blog

Quote: "the best way I have to describe the game is "Super Meat Boy meets Portal" aka "Reach the chamber exit fast and without dying". Seems to hit all the right notes, even though the movement doesnt seem to be as tight as SMB. Worth keeping an eye on however, you can access the Beta by contacting them via their website.

Great Permutator - $7/ Free Demo (PC)
indirect_2012-12-11_22-49-40-93.png

http://www.desura.com/games/great-permutator

SpaceChem Lite. You have boxes on top of the screen and need to transport them to the bottom by using several machines at your disposal. There is a free demo, and I think I'll buy this eventually. Its not as exhaustive as Factorio or SpaceChem, but still seems to be a pretty well done puzzle version of this gameplay style. A game that seemingly got downrated for being too hard. Try the demo!

Intrusion 2 - $10/ Free Demo (PC)
Intrusion3.jpg

http://www.intrusion2.com/

It's a pretty awesome Contra-like with a sort of physics engine. I played through the entire demo and gameplay is quite better than it seems at first. You can ride a giant wolf and shoot a railgun at the same time. A GIANT WOLF. Also ride mechas.

Legends of Aethereus - $25 in Beta (PC)
gsm_169_legendsofaethereus_BetaArena_gp_ot_pc_122012_640.jpg

http://www.aethereusgame.com/index.html

3D Action Real Time combat game that actually looks rather promising. I think the pricetag works quite a bit against it, so I personally havent tried it either, but I recommend taking a look at this gameplay trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JTNFfY3d1YM&list=PL8399CB2FEB89B1FF#! and these impressions by Raxum: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=51947376&postcount=912

Marvin's Mittens - $4,99 / Free Demo (PC)
mm10.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/marvins-mittens

A delightful 2D platformer that focusses solely on exploration and invokes a sense of wonder. Really adorable graphics too. Experienced gamers will be able to see the ending within a few hours, but what's there is tight, focused, and well-designed.

Monster Loves You - $9,99 (PC)
jDyqvXr2CX7Ky.png

http://www.dejobaan.com/monster/

This seemed to come out of left field from Dejobaan, until I learned that it was collaborative with another group. I think it's a great stepping stone for kids and adventure games, and there is still plenty of humor in it for adults. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=jbeXf3mFGfY

Mort The Intern - $6,99/ Free Demo (PC)
ss6.png

http://www.desura.com/games/mort-the-intern

Super Meat Boy style game with a hookshot. The game controls great and I actually like the addition of the hookshot. If you need something to scratch the SMB itch, try the demo.

OpenRA - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
invasion.png

http://www.desura.com/games/openra

Its the Command&Conquer I loved and missed. The originals are now Freeware, so someone took the code and polished it up to offer a seamless MP (and partially SP) experience for 2013. Unfortunately, this doesnt offer a tutorial or sizeable SP map repertoire, so newcomers and SP-only players are out of the equation. HOWEVER, you can play SP maps (which I just found out), you just need to start a new game without enemies and choose a story map. If you are itching to try your hands at ordering Tanya into the base of human players once more, this is definitely worth a look.

Order of Twilight - Free (PC, Linux, Mac)
order-of-twilight-7.jpg

http://stabyourself.net/orderoftwilight/#download

I am probably not the only one who almost didnt try it because it features a Pony. Another 2D puzzle platformer with an interesting twist. You need to "cast" your actions with the arrow keys. It starts out fairly simple but gets rapidly more interesting. Definitely worth a try for the mechanics.

Overlight - $1,49 for the Alpha/Free Demo (PC, Linux, Mac)
OverLight_2012-12-08_02-04-22-41.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/overlight

A very interesting puzzle game. Your goal is to guide the laser beams together by destroying the glass blocks and then create combos by doing that multiple times in a row. The demo wasnt all that challenging, but this game has a serious zoning out effect when you get rolling. Unfortunately, the balance was a bit off regarding the time it took to reach new levels, but the full version adds new mods. I'll pick this up eventually.

Qasir Al-Wasat: A Night in-Between - $9,99 (PC, Mac)
Qasir_1080_05.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/qasir-al-wasat

Basically, it's a stealth game where you're invisible. Despite what you'd imagine is a massive advantege, you're severly handicapped by the fact that you still make noise, can get covered in blood and paint, and die in a single hit.

Reprisal - $3,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
007.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/reprisal

Closest thing you get to the god-style games from the 90s. You need to guide a tribe, terraform the land and help them growing to obliterate any enemies in the way of your tribe. At the time of writing 50% off, and highly recommended. Music, gameplay and graphics are all top notch.

Super House of Dead Ninjas - Free Flash Version / €5,99 on Steam(Flash)
ninja.png

http://store.steampowered.com/app/224820/

People shouldnt dismiss this game just because it started as a flash game. Awesome action game with a great sense of speed and slashing satisfaction. Link to the Flash version: http://games.adultswim.com/super-house-of-dead-ninjas-action-online-game.html

Sword of the Stars: The Pit - $9,99/ Free Demo(PC)
jxgWQHwQqPnk4.jpg

http://sots-thepit.com/

Its a very competent roguelike in a sci-fi setting that basically does nothing wrong. You got a shit ton of stuff to find and use, skills you can improve on by using and levelling up. Random Alien gadgets, traps, recipes, a working targetting system. The roguelike genre is a bit overfilled with great contenders for everybodies time, but if you got a knack for Sci-Fi, this one is definitely one to check out.

The Plan - Free(PC)
theplan1.jpg

http://www.krillbite.com/theplan/

Artsy experimental adventure game in which you play a fly. The game is short, so dont look up videos if possible.

The Castle Doctrine - $8 in Beta (PC)
dqS97rf.jpg

http://thecastledoctrine.net/buy.php

I highly recommend checking out this game by Jason Rohrer (Sleep is Death). It is a perma death House burgling and House defense MMO. Its currently in Beta and 50% at $8, considering $16 for the eventual full version is a bit tough to swallow, you should really check it out now. Fantastic execution of a highly intriguing concept. Striking the balance between defending your own family and preparing measures to rob others of their money is just brilliant.

Triad - Free (PC)
eH0juhn.png

http://auntiepixelante.com/triad/

Short story of trying to share a place to sleep presented to you by a single puzzle. Nothing much but a cute 3 minutes of your time, but worth it for the interesting puzzle presented.

Teleglitch - $13/ Free Demo (PC)
tZYBGPr.jpg

http://teleglitch.com/

Came out late last year, has a Mac release up soon. A roguelike overhead shooter with nice science fiction. The style might not be for everyone, but the demo is rather convincing. Lots of stuff going on in here.

Unepic - $10/ Free Demo (PC)
sc_2.png

http://www.desura.com/games/unepic

Fantastically fun game with some good humor (Case in point: Commentary on the first enemy you kill). Basically a sidescrolling real time combat RPG. The game looks great in motion (lighting) and is every new room offers danger and intrigue, but this is a game everyone should try the demo of.

Waking Mars $9,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
Surface-Closeup.png

http://www.tigerstylegames.com/

Sidescrolling non-combat exploration game which revolves around the exploration of an unknown ecosystem and the player planting seeds to overcome any hurdles.Just finished the first chapter and even though it was rather simple, the story setup and core mechanics are surprisingly enjoyable. Grab it for minimum $1 here for the next few hours: https://indiegamestand.com/

War of the Human Tanks- $9,99/Free Demo (PC)
12.1.png

http://www.desura.com/games/war-of-the-human-tanks

Its a game with equal parts Interactive Fiction and Strategy gaming. I guess this game is easier to recommend to people who actually like japanese Visual novel games, since there is a LOT in here. If you like VN's AND strategy games, this one is worth a look.

Wooden Sen'SeY- $9,99/Free Demo (PC)
WoodenSenSeY_16.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/wooden-sensey

Simply amazing platformer. The most graphic way I found to describe it shortly would be: A fusion of the platformers of the past with visuals and feel of Trine & They Bleed Pixels. This is what happens when Alex Kidd gets two grappling axes and a wooden hat. And someone stole his booze.

Cube World - PC
10.jpg

http://wollay.blogspot.com.au/

It's a pretty decent-looking voxel RPG, that seems to be mostly randomly generated. The guy seems to be putting a lot of effort into making a really fun game to play, with decent combat mechanics and what looks to be a reasonably well generated world. Honestly can't wait to see how it plays.

Dawn of the Ronin - PC
twitpic_cbtyvy.jpg

http://x35mm.wordpress.com/

2D sidescrolling beat em up? The dev makes slow progress, so I imagine we wont see this out for a while, but the screenshots released are VERY intriguing.

Great OP already, subscribed.

I got Kentucky Route 0 in the recent Steam indie sale, but there's a bug that displays black bars over street names in the overworld, so I'll have to find a way to fix that before I can really get into it. The writing so far is really great though.

Looking forward to Frozen Endzone, Transistor and FEZ PC as well.

Already got Reprisal and Cartlife as this month indie projects. Don't tempt me Toma!

Great games, both of them. Very involved however. Grab yourself a tea when you want to dive into these.

Great to see Kentucky Route Zero on the podium, even though it's the most expensive game from the list. Well deserved.

Chasm looks like it'll tickle me. It's going to get a Kickstarter soon (early April).

Let us know when it does! I'd like to back as well, but I guess I'll need to wait for the Paypal option again.

Super House of Dead Ninjas and Cart Life are two of my favorite indies in quite a while

worth noting that Kentucky Route Zero act II should be coming out this month

when was Super Time Force announced for PC?

afaik it has (I guess limited) XBLA exclusivity

Thanks. I'll remove it, someone posted it in the older thread and I tried to verify the platforms where possible. The OP took ages to write up though, so I could have gotten some info wrong.

For anyone that's hesitant on getting super house of dead ninjas... Don't be. The game is amazing: fast acton and has a variety of weapons and unlocks. Great replay value for the price.

I had go on that. Really captured the 'no direct information, visual clues' idea that was in games like Myst which I found highly appealing. I'll keep an eye on its future development.

Another aspect that looks promising, is the musical one - the exploration and puzzles in this game are build around sound creation.

Just played Atum - awesome little game. It's a bit clunky but the idea behind it is amazing in it's simplicity.

I heard Gertsman from Giantbomb talking about "Papers, Please!" a few shows ago and it sounded very intriguing but forgot about it. Just tried it out thanks to this thread reminded me and it is indeed awesome. Wish I could play it on my tablet as I would probably sink hours into it.

So I was the only one voting for these game? GAF you disappoint me.

Anyway don't forget to get Waking Mars from indiegamestand, it activates on gog and includes the artwork and other extras at $1 point.

*sigh*

I haven't even tried out everything that looked interesting in the March thread, but here you are again. Now with Frozen Synapse comparisons and "Super Meat Boy + Grappling Hook" descriptions.

Steam Marines had a really weird feeling to it. I think it misses a LOT of polish. Melodisle was charming though.

Thankfully, after a quick run through of the thread my wallet will live to see another day.
Still love the thread and can't wait to see what else April brings.

Don't burn yourself managing this thread :p

If the thread works the way I want it to, I wouldnt need to do much other than making a new thread each month and the SS updates (which I love to do). If I ever cant do the thread, I'll let you guys know so that hopefully someone else jumps in. The layout of the OP in post 1 works now I think, most of it can just be C/P'ed.

Misjudged my amount of time to vote, ended up stuffing a bunch of games I hadn't played into the last minutes before I started assigning the top 5.

Glad to see Kentucky Route Zero in the top 3, as that was my personal number one for last month, though I'm perfectly ok with Papers, Please taking top billing. The ramp up in intensity really took me by surprise and some of the little bits from different people trying to cross the border were brilliant moral challenges thrown in there.

Even though my list is late, for posterity's sake my top 5:

Kentucky Route Zero
Proteus
Thirty Flights of Loving
Papers, Please
Kyoto

Now preparing my brain and wallet for another month onslaught.

Some cool news, especially for CheesecakeRecipe, regarding Memory of a Broken Dimension. The author wrote on his Twitter that after he gets back from GDC he will put a real demo online, instead of only the console one. I'm really curious what the hell it is.

Well, better get this show on the road. I don't really like this game too much, it's got real jittery handling. However, I am very competitive so if anyone beats my time.........well, it's on.

Haha, sorry to hear you dont like it. I think its actually quite well made. The real level is waaaaaaaay too long and I wish it was broken up in shorter sections, but once I got the hang of moving around properly and learning a bit of the level design, it was smooth sailing.

Oh man, I should check twitter more often. This made my weekend! Last I had seen from him he posted about his EGW presentation going sour thanks to some bugs and was bumming out about it. He didn't say what happened though, and I haven't dug around to see if anyone had written about his presentation. I was just messing around with the console only demo this morning in hopes that one day soon I'd get to see more. April, we're off to an excellent start.
