With the news that Brie Larson is in talks to play Captain Marvel, comes a tidbit that the Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 movie may have been renamed to Avengers 3.

In Deadline's report about Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, they make mention that the character may first appear in a different Marvel franchise "possibly Avengers 3 (formerly Avengers: Infinity War Part One)."

The report also states Captain Marvel may appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Regarding the reason for the change to Avengers 3, we can speculate it's for branding and marketing purposes, and it might even signify the first Infinity War movie is set more on Earth.

The quote in question:
Rumor has it Captain Marvel will be making her film debut prior to her stand-alone film in another Marvel franchise, possibly Avengers 3 (formerly Avengers: Infinity War Part One) or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Similar, in other words, to how the studio unveiled Black Panther and the rebooted Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.

We know that they were being renamed, but not to what.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are currently on a “victory lap,” you might say (after the incredible run of Captain America: Civil War reviews), through New York City this week. Early on Wednesday, I met them at a Midtown hotel to talk about the new film. During this discussion, Joe dropped a nifty piece of information about their next films, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 in 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 in 2019… namely, they won’t be called that much longer.

I asked the brothers how they decided where to divide the movie – and they said this was a misconception because the two movies are entirely different entities.

“The movies are two very different movies,” answered Joe.

I then asked if it’s misleading having them labeled as “Part 1” and “Part 2”

“It is misleading,” said Anthony.

Joe added, “The intention is we will change it, we just haven’t come up with the titles yet. But, yes, we will change it. And, yes, that is a scoop: we will retitle them.”

Though, considering AoU wasn't called Avengers 2 and outside of Iron Man no MCU films are using numbers, calling it Avengers 3 would be dumb dumb DUMB.

SPOILERS! (with some speculation)

Chris Evans is expected to reprise his role as Captain America/Steve Rogers in “Avengers: Infinity War- Part I.” A twist in the recently released in “Captain America: Steve Rogers #1” made fans speculate that Evans’ character is a villain in the third “Avengers” film to be released on May 4, 2018.

Fans were surprised to find out that from the start, Captain America has been a secret Hydra agent as Marvel revealed in “Captain America: Steve Rogers #1.” It turned out that this twist has been long planned.

Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort told Time that the twist has been in the works for more than a year. He said “Captain America: Steve Rogers #1” writer Nick Spencer pitched them the story as part and parcel of restoring Steve Rogers to his “youth and vigor.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Spencer explained that Rick Remender, a previous writer of the series, has been working towards a similar twist before he did. The former said the latter had been building towards the story of Hydra having infiltrated various super teams and government institutions.

Spencer told the publication that he thought that Remender’s idea sounded like “too big of a story.” Therefore, he drilled the idea down and thought, “What if there’s just one very valuable Hydra plant?”

This led to Spencer’s realization that Steve Rogers can be the most valuable secret Hydra agent. The writer said nobody could do more damage than the character.

Also the Russos want Wolverine in the MCU

----

I think that would be the fastest leap from comic book plot to movie plot yet. Well, outside of something like Scott Pilgrim, where the movie was finished before the comic.

I really don't like the idea of that happening in the MCU, besides that it wouldn't make much sense. (About the Cap rumors)

The Part 1/Part 2 trend in blockbuster films nowadays is so fucking dumb. Harry Potter started it and gets a pass for being the first, but every movie since that's done it hasn't done shit to earn it.

Releasing an Avengers movie in two parts is especially dumb because while it's technically an adaptation they're so divergent from the comic books and make so many changes already that going "oh well the story was too long to tell in one movie" isn't really applicable.

There is literally no way Cap is Hydra in the MCU. Not even 0.000001% chance.

Also there is no way to reconcile the current X-Men canon and the MCU, so it would have to be a new reimagining of Wolverine. And the public just wouldn't be ready for that until a couple years after Jackson officially retires.

At least you can talk. Who are you?
That Cap stuff isn't a rumour it's just fan dribble.
Edit: also, stop linking to those awful sites and put the proper source instead.

I recall people fussing about Civil War being in the MCU too.

That's different, I think. We knew where Civil War went, we're not sure what the endgame with this will be. It just doesn't make much sense. He's spent all three movies fighting Hydra and trying to get Bucky from their clutches, it wouldn't make sense for him to be a Hydra agent unless he was a SUPER sleeper agent. Which would feel pretty forced and retreaded, IMO.

Pretty sure the name change has been reported before. Also, they're not going to make Cap an agent of HYDRA in the movies. Come on.

The Russos have already said that the two movies will be stand-alone stories.

At this point the MCU has got to be winding Hydra down a bit anyway. I really doubt we'll see them play any sort of prominent role in Avengers 3. Even the TV show seems to be getting tired of them.

I think a large part of the problem with that is due to their source. They just chop the book in half, which is jarring.

These movies should be planned better so that each part tells a good story arc.

For a character that's been around for 76 years, one year isn't exactly "long-planned." I'm not even a comic reader but the Hydra twist sounds like a nonsensical twist that a five-year-old thought up.

Fox,

Please be smart. Give Wolverine to the Russo's. Trust us.

Tim Miller, kthx.

On topic, there's no way they'll make Cap the villain. They just explored the heroes fighting each other angle with Civil War, and there's zero reason to do it again--much less with the same characters--while teasing us again with Thanos.

They're all but gone really.

Also everything Bobby Roberts ever says about comic book movie reporting just falls on deaf ears huh?

One of the Russos let it slip that Captain Marvel would be appearing in Infinity War Part 1 (or whatever it's called).

Also, CosmicBookNews is an absolute shit source. The worst of the worst. More than CBM or Latino Review, they just straight up lie. They're not worth the clicks.

Yeah, pretty much all the current planned MCU movies are offworld (thor, thanos, guardians) or tangential stories (Strange, BP, C. Marvel, etc).

Maybe Hydra can be the villain in AntMan 2? Maybe BP? I seriously doubt it though.

I still think the first film should be space-centric with a focus on Thanos collecting the gems (call it Thanos: Infinity Gauntlet) before everything comes to Earth for Avengers: Infinity War.
I'd bet it will be the other way around.

Hoping they think of something else than Avengers 3, though I don't think that's likely to end up being the title. With the MCU pretty much going on as long as they can make it go on having numbered sequels doesn't make much sense anyway, aside from the Iron Man trilogy and Guardians.

As for Cap, I think translating the Hydra twist to the MCU would be ballsy - but certainly room for it to fit after the events of Civil War.

What the hell point would Cap being an agent of Hydra even serve in the movies?

Are they in cahoots with Thanos?

Avengers 3 would be a dumb name, especially with them basically going with subtitles for almost every MCU movie recently, including the last Avengers to boot. It'd work as a placeholder, but it'd kind of stand out otherwise.

And they seriously think they're going to adapt a "Cap is secretly evil" storyline that literally just started and will likely turn out to not matter in the end thanks to brainwash/cloning shenanigans? That's perhaps the worst fan theory I've heard in a long time.

Why would he be Hydra in the MCU? Hydra is basically over and done with. They were hunting down the last strongholds in Age of Ultron and if you count Agents of Shield (which no one will), they pretty much nuked any other remnants.

So all of a sudden, Steve would be Hydra all along? When would that have happened?

I'm already starting to throw up picturing their shaky, impact-ruining cinematography in a Wolverine movie. No thanks.

(And yeah, a lot of the Wolverine wasn't great there either. But Civil War was on a whole different level of ineptitude.)

I don't really feel like it'd make much sense in the MCU either. TWS makes it clear that Hydra only infiltrated the SSR when Zola was hired after WW2, after Cap was iced.

Should be banned to be honest.

I was going to entertain this with a response but there's literally no point because it won't happen.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
People assumed he's a villain based on the comic? Did they assume he'd be old in civil war too?

I almost hoped they would make steve a hydra agent in the movies, just for the meltdowns it would produce, but it wouldn't make sense at all thematically.

Fuck this universe if they make him a Hydra agent. :(

So glad they are going with the Russos again though, Winter Soldier and Civil War were amazeballs

Just put all of the Netflix and movie characters in it. Have the good guys defeat Thanos and put a bow on things so that RDJ and Evans can all retire like they want.

I wouldn't be surprised if Thanos never actually gets the gauntlet. The first movie would be set-up and the second movie would be a race to stop Thanos from getting the gems and creating the gauntlet.
