Alright, I trust you're being genuine. I just am really trying to feel the bottom of the well. But for the record, yes there are a lot of variables within different scenarios in the industry as you mentioned. But with this specific event, I cannot personally see many variables. You guys are partnered with them. I mean, I don't know how else to interpret such a thing other than either a.) someone failed hard at their job by now finding out it was 1080p all along or b.) someone is doing their job by preventing this news from coming out. It simply doesn't make much sense to me otherwise. But, yes, even I must acknowledge there may still potentially be other variables I am not thinking of. So, fair enough.

And I have to say, I think if we find out this was 1080p all along natively, you guys would need to ask yourselves - or the 3rd party relations team anyway - why it was that they so blatantly failed to stop the bleeding when they could have and Sony was able to do it with ease?

I want competition in this industry, and it seems every big player has to go through a very tough generation or two sometimes. I suspect this is your such generation, but I hope you guys find your fighting feet and return to form. I really want to be enthusiastic when I jump on board.
Exactly, Microsoft is the one with the exclusive partnership for Call of Duty, claiming that that Sony has some sort of deal with them so that they can make an announcement about this is kinda absurd.

I never said it wasn't a big deal. That it was a big deal was exactly my point. This is what we do, no shame at all. But what I don't like is being lumped into the "oh, you think GAF is a hivemind" shit like I'm some kind of fanboy. All I did was point out that a lot of the people that hyped up the COD720 thread admittedly weren't buying a 180. At that point it transcends concern and goes into "watching a train wreck" territory.
I think I just read this as more negative toward the forum than you intended. I took it as "these guys are hypocrites", but I take it you meant "these guys just enjoy talking about the drama".

Apologies if I misunderstood, and yeah, that's why we're all here. :)

You new here? I'd wager most of the people super concerned with it are buying a PS4. We can't have the consensus of "GAF only seems biased because as hardcore gamers most of us stand behind the superior product" and at the same time a 50 page thread about the resolution of a console that most admit they aren't buying.

Tl;Dr Most people are in it purely for drama/bragging rights. Welcome to a console launch!

Would it really surprise you if Phil Spencer and Albert Penello did actually know the resolution of the game?
It's the biggest franchise out there, it's part of a major co-marketing deal with one of the biggest publishers. It launches in like three weeks?

I can fully accept that they can't say anything.

I can also accept that they can't even say anything to the effect of "I know, but can't say anything." Because that in itself is basically an admission at this stage.

The closest they can come to that is probably, "If I did know I couldn't say."

But it frankly beggars belief that whoever the multiple people famousmortimer is talking to that are confirming this to him know and people within Microsoft's entertainment division do not.
The truth is, it is so much worse if they are not lying. This will be yet another in an assortment of details , that the powers that be in the xbox division are clueless.

If you don't know, then keep your mouth shut. They are now just highlighting either ignorance, willful ignorance or deception.

Who on earth is confused which one looks better? Everyone knows it's Battlefield.

Why even beat around the bush about this.
I guess you really want him to be fired.

To put himself in the middle of two mega publishers ( both which MS have deals with ) would be the worst decision ever.

Keep quiet, because at this stage nothing is going to make it better.

It's quite normal for PR

We saw it with Driveclub last week
We see it with Sony no longer shouting about certain sales figures.
It took what, a day for them to announce that DC was delayed?

And you're otherwise comparing to something that has no bearing on your purchase? Really?

I mean, it'd be like Sony saying "We can't tell you if DC is delayed or not. You'll see on November 15th"

No, but people used it an example of why multiplatform games are better on 360, and rightfully so.

Ps4 is just going to be better for multiplatform games.
Pretty much. It was common knowledge that multi-plats were generally better on 360 than PS3, with some truly horrible ports.

It looks like this generation that situation is going to be reversed, but we won't really know until the games start coming out.

The only question left to ask here is... does anyone actually believe the XB1 version isn't running at 720p? As far as I'm concerned, it's a done deal and the sources + silence = confirmation.

You know, why was it so uncool?..he said it was "pretty weird" and that was about it. If that's not cool or rude then gimme a break. Albert was asking Twitter like the day before for a list of the resolutions of 3rd party titles, then the next day was trying to say resolutions didn't matter in reference to COD.

Albert has put himself out there, with his magical mathematics and open dialogue with gamers. If someone cannot call him out on something, or he is disappointed when they do, then he shouldn't be trying to interact with his potential customers. This IS the way this business works, at least from the social media aspect of interacting with gamers.
It's like I said later. I just felt bad for the guy. He's getting piled on for doing (in his mind) his job.

I would like to back-up on the point on partnering though.

It really doesn't mean anything. Despite the buzzword of 'partnership' being thrown around, I've been in enough marketing partnerships that are nothing more than exchange of money and signing of contracts for certain marketing deals.

Beyond that, practically zero contact with the 'partner's internal team, only working with their account manager that will give updates on their status, but also nothing very detailed.

So yes, it's entirely possible that MS partnered with Activision, but really knows nothing more than Sony, other than the fact their stuff are exclusive for a period of time.

A lot of it is actually on the marketing side, where the marketing department of respective companies will make sure to 'give proper mentions' to each other during events and ads, as per the contract.

Amir0x I detailed that in this post

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=86179612&postcount=8203

3rd party is a separate organization. Phil doesn't know. Most people don't know. That information is kept private.

"You don't need to know" doesn't mean anything. I get that from him all the time, whether it's good news or bad news.

I don't know how Sony sets up their publishing organization or why they are choosing to share.

Fair play for stepping in here and posting Albert, much respect.

I also understand the fact that there are things you can not say as it is not your place to state it.

What is a problem I believe is the very fact that someone from MS who is in the position to speak about such things and find out such information has not done so and got out in front of this situation, long running negative rumours that persist until the truth is told or admitted are harmful to any brand ....... better to come clean (if necessary) and get the rumour mill shut down .....

.... for example the DriveClub delay, truth is told and it is consigned to history.

Sony are going to state the fact that CoD is 1080p because according to the rumour, the Xbox One (the Console that has partnered CoD and has the deal etc) is not.

Makes your machine look inferior and diminishes it even further in the publics mind .......... most people probably don't care, but negative news whether you understand or not is still negative and will be perceived as so.

Being more expensive, technically inferior and with graphically inferior games does not make for a good story for a consumer that is not invested in any of your exclusives ........ confidence in a purchase is important and if someone tells you that the One is the wrong one to get based on all the negative news then confidence is diminished and a sale might be lost.

Thanks for the enhanced perspective. Do you not still think it odd that even if the 'partnership' is as casual as this, that Sony which has absolutely no ties to the franchise in this way would be able to so easily confirm it while Microsoft can not?

Albert, It's probably wise to just stop posting in this thread on this subject.

We look forward to you sharing information on Kinect and other features that separate the XB1 from the competition, but as far as game performance goes and technical specs, there is no need to try and spin it, It's clear the PS4 is superior hardware for playing games so let it go, You asked for a list of resolutions, I provided them to you, more are being confirmed and it is not coming off well for the Xbox brand, I suggest you leave it alone and you should probably regret starting that conversation.

PS. still waiting on that chart you promised us for Voice cotrol/launch countries/countries etc.

PPS. Please ask MS PR to stop telling us we didn't understand the DRM, we did.

According to famousmortimer, Activision is working hard on upping the resolution to 1080p (forbidden topic for the press):
http://doddscientifics.com/2013/10/...ello-neogaf-and-twitter-a-dramatic-retelling/
Though, there is a wrinkle to it that I didn’t know about during the initial rumor… Activision is very hard at work trying to up the resolution. Whether this comes as a day one patch, or a day 100 patch, or what… I don’t know.
As to right now, 720p seems to be confirmed:
Days have passed and I’ve heard it from many sources now. This is no longer something I consider flimsy. If it’s not true I will be shocked at this point because the sources are that strong (I will also lose all credibility – that’s not something I’m oblivious to).

Albert, if COD: Ghosts is 720p on the XB1, and 1080p on the PS4, will you take back your previous statement about a >30% performance gap not existing between PS4 and XB1?
This is both stupid and disrespectful.

Looks like sony hasn't confirmed anything. We don't know what res it runs at on ps4.
Adam Boyes confirmed it during a press conference in Brazil.

Yup, that's it. As gamers it's very interesting. I'm not buying CoD (I dont think) as a matter of fact my PS4 preorder bundle comes with BF4, but here I am reading this thread about a game that doesn't concern me. Why? Because drama is entertaining as fuck.

The odd part is the fundamental issue behind all this. Never mind the marketing partnership, what is important is the partnership Microsoft has had with Call of Duty selling a bucketload of consoles and live subscriptions in the past generation.

You would think from a product perspective, the first meeting would have had the directive:

"Ok time to make a new console. It has to run call of duty the best."

I mean time marches on and the focus issues have been well documented. But it seems such a basic thing to make sure you get right. Am I overstating the importance of the franchise to the xbox brand?

I don't find it odd, because imo, MS knows, but they're simply choosing to not confirm it.

If Sony knows, MS knows.End of story.

Whether or not Penello knows is a completely different story, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since too many aren't. Means nothing though.

Since every comment seems to create a s**tstorm, here goes.

Go back and read what I said – not other people’s *interpretation* of what I said.

I was getting a lot of tweets asking about the issue of resolution. I’ve seen the game, then I saw the PS4 footage, and I simply suggested that people wait for footage on both platforms to debate.

I’ve said this exact same thing on this forum several times. But nobody reads the posts, people then just start to assume things or read into things, or then call into question my honesty. Let’s put this to bed.

Here’s a fact that will blow your mind.

The guy that runs 3rd party relations for Xbox is one of my best friends. And we have to play this information game all the time. He has the utmost respect for the confidentiality of partner details. So I did call him and ask him, and he told me very directly “You don’t need to know”

End of conversation. End of speculation.

Nobody at MS will comment on this. Most people don’t know. This is Activision’s product, and it’s completely up to them on how/when they want to show this product, why they choose to roll-out their game in a certain way, and what platforms they choose to show on.

There is no point in lying about anything. If I did know, I would have just said “I can’t say”. You all would have gotten the same answer.

So please, let’s be careful on the “lying” and “obfuscation” memes around here. Read what I post. I ignore 99% of the insults here because they are clearly a result of people not actually reading.

That said, keep up the .gifs. Those I love.

Well that's a pretty shitty "deal" with Activision for Microsoft if Sony's 3rd party relations guy can tell the world that COD runs at 1080p on PS4 and Microsoft's 3rd party relations guy cannot tell his best friend and fellow coworker what it runs at. That whole scenario confuses me really, I've never heard of deals or relationships allowing console exclusivity for revealing a games resolution. That's what it sounds like if nobody at Microsoft is "allowed" to reveal the resolution.

My major problem with this situation is that it's damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

If they don't know, I wonder what the fuck is going on with the relationship between Activision and Microsoft, and why they are not working very closely with their MAJOR partner on the biggest game of the holiday season.

And if they do, then frankly I simply feel lied to, especially since the game has gone GOLD.

From my understanding, it seems like the people that do know at Microsoft is giving Penello plausible deniability, and that rubs me the wrong way.

No.

It outsells any Xbox exclusive and it outsells the PS3 counterpart, it's pretty important that they keep the perception that "Xbox is the best place to play Call of Duty".

Unfortunately for them, due to the decisions they made on the hardware, that will no longer be the case in the future.

I've mentioned this in another thread, but after all this controversy, I went to try out the two resolutions on a few PC games I had (Bioshock Infinite, Sleeping Dogs, Max Payne 3). Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference with PC games on my 55" 1080p TV unless I constantly switch back and forth between the two resolutions and make a concerted effort to pick out details in the same scene :/ (I sit 8-10 feet away from my TV, btw).

Honestly, the only obvious way I could tell the difference was because the HUD elements changed size. Text would probably be another easy way to tell. But for an average action game in motion? I wouldn't be able to eyeball resolutions either. I can identify 30 vs. 60 fps, low details versus high details, and 480p vs. 720p though. Just not 720p vs. 1080p, unless I really made a concerted effort to spot the differences.

I don't think it's such a shock that some people may not be able to tell offhand from just watching a game being played. Maybe for some people, there are other graphics differences that jump out more than just resolution?
I read that you were a developer. You really can't easily tell the difference? That is very surprising considering 720p blown up to twice its size looks like blurry shit on a TV that isn't trashola. And I need to wear glasses to drive.

Gotcha. I guess no matter what, at the end, it seems we will have to wait for the verdict amongst its releases. It will be fascinating if nothing else... but I hope it turns out well and Xbox One gets that patch, if that's the route they're going.

ZoE2 HD did and it also got AA added and ran at a steady 60 after. I remember Ghostbusters PS3 got a pretty big resolution bump in a patch too.
Thanks guys. Forgot about ZOE.

How come knowledge of a game isn't limited to a few people at Sony? Adam was proud to tell the whole world Ghosts runs at 1080p today. And you can't get even your own good friend to tell you the resolution of the XB1 version, even if you kept it secret?

I don't believe it one bit.

Im surprised that Microsoft's biggest partner made their game inferior on the xbone lol.
Remember the rumors we all believed this summer about MS's tools not just being late but also being shitty and causing performance downgrades? This probably has a lot to do with that. Something happened between June and now. In June Activision seemed adamant that both versions were going to be 1080p.
