Internet Speeds and Online Gaming -- How fast is fast enough?

Never mind the bandwidth, 4200 miles with a 3ms ping? I didn't even know that was possible.

The picture is from a lan party called the gathering, they kind of just lease 6000 IP addresses, but this gets them unregistered addresses and so they show up as the middle of nowhere.

Fun fact this is one of the worse ones i have, last year they "only " had 30Gb, the year before that they had a 200Gb connection and i believe i had 700/700 there. It was so insane that i believe when prompted to try and overload the network, we couldn't even break 20% of the speed and not because the network couldn't handle it.

Internet speed does not matter all that much for gaming. Anyone not on dial-up on this board will have more than enough. The problem is elsewhere.

I have 300/100 at home with 1ms ping, way more than you would need, and I still have problems depending on the game (netcode) and where the other players are located. There's not much you can do at that point.

But i didnt have a problem with 8 down and 1 up that i had before i got fiber

I game fine, but I believe the router is more important than the download speed. Make sure you don't get stuck with some $40 cheapo that spaz's out when more than one device is connected to it.

London, ON

My results are slow as shit compared to the majority of you, yet I rarely have a problem with anything. GF can be watching 1080p HD on Netflix while I'm downloading something and playing FFXIV online, and nobody chokes.

Why am I seeing people with much more impressive results complaining that they can't even get Netflix to buffer fast enough?

EDIT: I'd like to add, that I'm happy with this Start Communications. I believe they rent the lines from Bell, but they truly give an unlimited downloading. Some months I push 2-3 TB and they've never even said a peep to me. For comparison, major companies around here like Rogers tend to cap around 300GB per month before they charge you up the ass (hence the reason I switched last year)

Paying for 100/10, so this is pretty much what it should be I suppose. Ping is also pretty good. And of course no bandwidth cap, we don't have that nonsense on home connections here.

Paying 299 SEK/month for this, which is about $46.

HOWEVER, going through my router (with only the computer connected) I get this:

3200672319.png

Ping is still good, but the router chops off 1/3 of my download speed. Really need to get a new one...

Weidly, when going through my router the site thinks I'm in a different location (that's why the server distances are different even though it's the same server). Don't know what's going on there

You'll need the lowest ping possible for a quality online experience. As far as bandwidth goes, you'll need a high-speed upstream for hosting games, the requirement on how much you need depends on whether you're hosting a 2-4 player p2p game or running a dedicated server for 64-128 or higher player count. downstream doesn't matter that much even for games like 128 player Arma matches, something like 1Mbps-2Mbps will be more than enough.

Also, use pingtest to check how good your ping is with several servers.

Only Speedtest server I could fin that allowed my speed to go above ~120Mbit..

Here's when testing against a good server. I'm paying for 250/50 with no caps. 62€/m

Anything over 20mbps is pretty fast for gaming. With that said I have a 50mbps down 20mbps up connection and still run into issues with other people acting as hosts in non dedicated server games

Works fine for most genres. However I'm always a bit reluctant to go online with SF4 because of that upload/ping :/

Anything over 20mbps is pretty fast for gaming.

You really don't need a significant download speed for online gaming at all. It's more about upload/ping. When download speeds start getting astronomical, it really is pretty irrelevant to your gaming experience.

100MBPS right now. not enough honestly. i will be upgrading to 200/300 this year.

Hah, I will never understand why people need more than 100 Mbps, unless you're constantly downloading several huge files at once. My ISP offers 250 and 1000 Mbps plans, but I have no idea what I would even use that for. 100 is absolutely sufficient for my needs, and most of the time I don't really even need that.

So long as the quality of your connection is good (no packet loss, low latency) bandwidth doesn't matter for games. 1 Mb up and down is probably still enough for any games which aren't streaming in actual content (such as MMOs).

I agree with the 1mb up and down statement, but from my experience most MMO's use a minuscule amount of bandwidth as well. Again it's more just ping/latency.

100MBPS is still pretty slow for downloading AAA titles that are 15 to 30GB on steam. it downloads at about 5 to 6MB/s. my ISP doesn't even give constant 100MBPS. most of the time its 60 to 80MBPS and during the holidays it even dropped to 10.

its also not enough for netflix via VPN. i'm not sure if it has to do with the VPN service or my ISP but on netflix is can barely stream at HD without buffering.

Because waiting for a 20-30GB game to download is boring. Games are not going to get smaller with these new consoles. Why limit yourself to slower speeds if you can get faster internet relatively cheap. Sure, if you live in a shitty country like US when it comes to internet speed and prices I can understand you. But here in Sweden we can get 1000/100 (or even 1000 upload in some cases) for $122. That is not much more expensive than what some people pay for ~50-100Mbit in US..

Ditched ATT for this a few months back. I kinda wish the upload speed was faster, as I always get throttled down when uploading something big. Also the cap is around 250GB/Month. Great for downloading Steam games when I get the (rare) urge to actually play them.

Look at this travesty.

Just looking at some of the internet connections in NA is depressing.

I wish this country realized that investing in a massive overhaul of internet pipelines would result in not only millions of jobs in every state during development, but millions of jobs on the back end as well. Blazing fast internet speeds opens the doors for so many services that simply cannot be executed on the current internet infrastructure.

But no. More increases in military spending (while they cut food stamps). More tax cuts for people who can already afford blazing internet to be brought right to their houses.

Politicians would rather ensure that the current providers can offer 3rd world levels of service for premium prices so improvement is moving like a snail crawling across a salty dinner table.

the way they want to move cloud gaming ping will not be on the only thing measured and thats another issue.

Bandwidth and ping will be almost 1:1 in a future with the almighty cloud.......and those with speeds under 10mbps will probably feel the pain when Gaikai hits, or if Microsoft actually gets a dev to move a lot of shit server side for those "effects" that are not needed for real time processing such as clouds and such.

Pretty good, I would love more Upload but could only upgrade to like 75/15 and that would be a bit too expensive for my taste.

1mbit both ways should be enough. Especially if you are not going to download stuff while playing. I sometimes do.

I have the option for a cheap plan at 12 Mbps and up to 1.5 Mbps upload speeds.

This is fine for gaming but can be slow if you are planning on downloading lots of new games, some of which are 20GB or more.

Rate me, GAF:

DL/UL speed has nothing to do with how well online gaming works (unless you have extremely slow connections but even then the throughput from online game isn't high). It's all about Ping and stability.

That's exactly why this cloud gaming talk is bullshit.

Hey "1ms ping"-ers, get on my level!

As you guys can see, Speedtest's ping measurements are a load of bollocks at times. ;P Pinging to actual gaming servers tends to be a little more accurate.

I get like 8-9 MB/s on Steam (maybe I'd be getting more if my shitty router wasn't limiting my download speed to about 70 Mbps), so that's 480+ MB/min or 29+ GB/hour. Good enough for me, I can wait an hour or two to play the game if it's a really large one. Also, how much bandwidth can Steam actually saturate? Like, if I were to get a 1000 Mbps connection, what download speeds would I get on Steam?

I have absolutely no issues streaming the highest quality on Netflix. There's never any buffering beyond the initial one. I'm not doing it through a VPN though.

Well, I'm comparing what the different speeds would cost me here in Sweden, not what the poor souls in the US have to pay for their much worse connections. I'm currently paying 299 SEK for 100/10. 250/10 would be 399 SEK, which is certainly a better value, but is it worth it? Not sure, since I'm pretty happy with the speeds I'm getting now. Plus, I'd have to get a new router to even be able to take advantage of it (which I should do anyway, but eh). 1000/100 is 799 SEK, which is just a lot more than I'm prepared to pay for an internet connection.

I have recently upgraded to this and sometimes it's great and others not so much. I sometimes experience the same issues when I was on my old 2mb down and 700kb up connection.

The problem is online console games, if you get a bad host, theres nothing you can do.

I was just comparing how relatively cheap our internet is compared to other countries. To them our price for 1Gbit is pretty damn "cheap", even though it's still a bit too much for us who are used to pretty low prices (wish I wasn't stuck with Comhem and their expensive stuff..).

At the moment I agree that 799 SEK is too much for internet. But 1Gbit is getting more popular and it will get cheaper soon enough. When it hits ~500SEK and is available where I live, I'd get it immediately. I love faster speed because waiting sucks.

Netflix only streams at around 1000 bitrate( 1700 is 720P i believe) hulu has no problem maintaining "high" quality though. damn the media development authority here for having extremely strict laws. iTunes had TV shows here for a day before getting removed by them.

200MBPS is around 351 SEK when converted and imo i feel that it is worth it. my current ISP is too unstable anyway. i could really use the upgraded DL speed and the ISP im switching to supplies a free VPN for netflix and hulu

should add that 799 SEK is really cheap for 1000MBPS. 1000MBPS costs 2000 SEK here ( converted from SGD TO SEK)

Yeah, I was stuck with ComHem previously as well. Then Tele2 installed fiber in my building, and I gladly switched over.

Does Google Fiber count?

just kidding i have peasant internet. This is my speed ~80% of the time. The other 20% it disconnects.
fuck Charter

Netflix only streams at around 1000 bitrate ...

Hmm, their support pages say that the recommended download speed for their "Super HD" streams is 7 Mbps.

Sure, it might be comparatively cheap, but it's still 2.7x what I'm paying now. And I just don't think I'd take enough advantage of the extra speed for it to be worth it.
