Internet Speeds and Online Gaming -- How fast is fast enough?

I was just comparing how relatively cheap our internet is compared to other countries. To them our price for 1Gbit is pretty damn "cheap", even though it's still a bit too much for us who are used to pretty low prices (wish I wasn't stuck with Comhem and their expensive stuff..).

At the moment I agree that 799 SEK is too much for internet. But 1Gbit is getting more popular and it will get cheaper soon enough. When it hits ~500SEK and is available where I live, I'd get it immediately. I love faster speed because waiting sucks.

It would be more interesting with 1000 Mbps bothways. Atm it's 1000/100 (last time I checked) although you get what, 200-400 upstream in reality iirc.

For OP, it depends. As you don't mention what kind of solution it is you are being offered it's kind of difficult to give advice. Since you are going to be downloading games, patches etc. I'd say, go with the faster one if the price is right and the connection is good.

If however, it is xDSL (which I suspect based on the plans you show as example) I'd try the faster one IF the provider can offer a free downgrade, no questions asked. xDSL depends ALOT on distance to the ISP equipment, and the quality of the used lines. Great distance and/or bad cables will result in more error correction required as your connection speed increases. This will increase your latency and I don't know about other gamers out there, but I'd rather have a decent latency then higher speeds.

Is it possible for you to find out the distance from your new home to the ISP's equipment (DSLAM, I'm not sure what the housing is actuallly called in english, exchange? :p) and what solutions are being offered? ADSL2, AnnexM, VDSL?

Comcast claim's 25 / 5

I think I'm okay for now.

Just tried watching a 4 k video on youtube... It buffered the whole time!

Here's my connection. What is the ideal speed for watching 4k content online?

Depends on the bitrate, really. Netflix uses around 16 MBit IIRC. Other services require higher than that, so I'd say you need at least 20 Mbit download to be on the safe side.

I've got a 250 mbps connection and don't notice anything measurably better than when I had 50 mbps in terms of actual latency; it's really all about ping, any speed's just about sufficient.

Much, much nicer in terms of downloads/uploads, like installations for games, patching MMOs, etc though.

I have 152Mb/10Mb for £41 a month but the download speed is getting doubled to 300Mb before the end of the year. UK is the best.

Realistically though unless you play a lot of PC games you don't need a very fast connection because downloads on PS4 and Xbone don't even make use of half of my connection. Steam maxes it out though.

Edit: Apparently Switzerland is in fact, the best. BRB Moving.

AT&T has a monopoly here. I pay for 3down 1 up (The fastest available) this is what I get.

Online gaming for me is a goddamn nightmare.

That's basically what I get in rural Scotland, we have fibre in our local exchange for 9 months but they still won't connect it up.

I can play online OK on this connection if I am the only one online, if someone else is online and even loads some images I get horrific lag spikes.

Currently I have 300/30 (it was 100/10 until a couple months ago when the ISP upgraded everyone's speeds) and, to be honest, there isn't really that much difference ping-wise between 100/10 and 300/30.

What it really is noticeable is how quickly you can download games on a 300MB connection. For most games on Steam I'd spend more time pre-downloading and unlocking them than actually downloading it once they're available.

Set the server to London (I'm in Scotland) since that seems to be where most servers are for the UK.

I'm happy with it. Virgin Media has now increased my speed 3 times for "free". Sure that bill has gone up a little each time but I'm maybe paying £10 more than I was when I only had 10/1.

Never had a problem gaming online with my connection. When I had 20/2 I could use things like Vita Remote Play just fine. Also, can stream from my XB1 to PC on highest settings. A faster connection to download games would be nice but I'm fine with what I got.

I have a 10/5 connection and live in Southern Africa region and it does perfectly ok for online gaming.

Downloads off PSN can sometimes take a while but considering my location I download stuff like the Star Wars beta in about 7 hours which is quite decent. UC collection pre load which was 44Gb took nearly a day.

I can do things like Remote Play quite decently as well.

I've always wondered if there are any Playstation servers in my region or whether I'm thrown into EU servers (which is most likely).

Netflix says 25 Mbit download. so you are on the right track... at least 20Mbit for 4k streaming

What £30 in Central London gets you.. if you ever want to play fast competitive online games or stream, don't come within a 50mile radius :3
