Iowa 2008 Caucus Thread

I haven't really been paying attention to the campaign so far, so this is the first time I've really listened to Obama before. I liked the parts I heard when I wasn't zoning out. It's about convinced me to vote for him during the Tennessee primary.

From what I've ever seen in my lifetime, no one really gives a speech the way obama does. It's almost magical in a sense.

Did Edwards really finish second? Holy shit.

Huckabee used to be a preacher (or maybe he still is) which pretty much locks him in the South. I can't really see Obama winning a single southern state. He's running against a white male right winger. They'll line up for Huckabee in droves.
He doesn't have to. And I'd say at least Florida and Virgina at least aren't foregone conclusions.

There are those that said this day would never come....

OBAMA INVASION CONFIRMED.

Anyone who votes for Huckabee is subhuman in my book. Are you people insane? Seriously. Do you want to destroy America?
Calm down. Huckabee isn't going to destroy America, just all non-heterosexuals and non-Christians.

Take Jesus into your heart and shut the fuck up.

I was about to suggest you've had a bit too much communal wine, but you guys prefer to liken Welches to the blood of Christ.

He's repeating a lot from that earlier speech you all loved. I always start to cringe when he brings up the Civil Rights Movement. People say he's good at avoiding playing the race card, but he comes dangerously close to eluding to it sometimes, and I think he should steer clear.

He should ignore american history because it makes you uncomfortable? He metioned civil rights in context. Seriously get the fuck out with that.

Secretary of State? Biden is good on foreign relations.

a lot of people are saying that, and that's fine.

I just want more people to see the sheer competence of this guy. Obama is definitely my candidate, but Biden deserves more respect than he gets.

Disregard your political position for a second, but there's no doubt whatsoever that if the US voted for Obama, the world would raise an eyebrow and say, "orly? You went from Bush to Obama? Props. Maybe we can stop calling them Freedom Fries now, nes pas?"

man if i were a lifetime republican, it's no wonder I'd vote for someone like Huckabee. Some of you guys are almost spiteful in your dismissal of the thinking capacity of people on the other side. Makes one want to vote out of anger.

is that why you're voting for Huckabee, then?

As I said before, no one on the Democratic side is appealing to me. Absolutely not Hilary and I feel that Obama is too green under the collar along with being stupefyingly idealistic to get my vote.

sporks, wtf? a little over the top.

and btw, cnn's HD coverage was pretty damn good.

Nah, it isn't being over the top, this guy stands for everything that divides America right now. And everything the rest of the world hates us for. Another 4 years of Bush++ is gonna send things over the edge.

218,000 Democratic voters turned out for the caucus.

Absolutely amazing.

The Clinton and Edwards campaign were very skeptical of the latest DMR poll exactly because their models had 200,000 voters turning out.

220K is INSANE. And Obama won the women vote, too.

The nomination is his.

How about you shut the f up, and stop posting?

Because somebody votes for whoever that makes that person a subhuman? Luckily this isnt your country.

I do hope Biden is retained in some capacity for the coming administration. Secretary of State as was mentioned before would be great. Just let Biden be Biden, who is very passionate when it comes to foreign relations and events overseas.

Reminds me of James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Creationism isn't thinking. It's blind faith.

oh it's not that, it's just that from your response you made it sound like the only reason you'd vote Huckabee is because Obama has no chance.

A person doesn't have to believe in creationism to support Huckabee or the positions related to it, nor does someone who believes in God lack the mental capacity to run a country. You're being silly.

obama's speech gave me chills and the ending to it was amazing

Obama said:
That is what we started here in Iowa, and that is the message we now carry to New Hampshire and beyond; the same message we had when we were up and when we were down; the one that can change this country brick by brick, block by block, calloused hand by calloused hand – that together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things; because we are not a collection of Red States and Blue States, we are the United States of America; and at this moment, in tthis election, we are ready to believe again.

did anyone else get a weird feeling that he was going to get shot during that speech? at one point during it i actually got a bad feeling that something bad was going to happen.

Edwards beating Clinton is huge too. Nearly 70% of the democratic primary votes went to progressives. When (if?) Edwards drops out, those voters are certainly not going to Clinton.

They don't consider throwing America deeper into the intellectual abyss an act of destruction. Besides, banning all abortions, teaching creationism in public schools and fighting religious wars across the face of the planet is just what God wants.
:lol Well played.

It's not just Gaffers, a lot of the establishment Republicans are seething at the "country bumpkins" voting for someone besides Mitt Robot, I mean, Romney.

Yes, it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. That's exactly what I said.

OR

You need to use your head.

He is setting a precedent as a black man running for President and should focus on his strengths as a candidate, not something that could potentially divide people when he (and they) have done a good job thus far of ignoring the fact (as they should).

Plenty of time for that yet...

Religion in inherently devisive. If you go around pushing Jesus, you are essentially saying "You Muslims, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, etc. ARE ALL GOING TO HELL!"

You're going nowhere. All the major candidates are Christian, so then by your stretch, they're all religion bashing other religions by just being Christian.

I was quite sure he'd be shot for never mentioning Jesus or that God put him on that stage to fulfill a purpose.

Why? It's thanks to that movement that African-Americans can aim for anything any other American can aim for in the US. Look at the state of black people in other countries like Canada, France, the UK, Australia, etc. He can play the race card all he wants, there's still work to do in fact.

He's going to get the black vote out, a lot of black people weren't voting but in 08 it will be massive.

If Huckabee became president he seriously would destroy America. All the hyperbole about another 4 years of Bush destroying America, that isn't hyperbole with Huckabee. I don't understand how anyone can support him if they know the crap he stands for.

Some are more Christian than others.

BTW enjoy your videogames now because if the Huckster gets in those will be one of the first things to go.

Ironically, one of the MSNBC analysts compared Obama to Bobby Kennedy. I'm not joking.

God was too busy helping people in the NBA make easy layups.
