iPhone 5C |OT|

I just wish the 5c was a little cheaper, a price hike on the 5s is not helping either, same happened to the Mac mini just before I had the funds to buy one.

It has 5 innards yes but they shoved plastic up its arse, might as well strip a little more out and knock it down by 100 to look nicer to shoppers.
This is about increasing ASP and margins for investors.

But... it's decreasing anyway?

The average selling price has been remarkably steady, and remarkably high, typically around $600 for the duration of this products life. Something, again, unprecedented. My expectation is the new price point will be quite a bit lower than $600, starting with about $450, it might drop a bit further, [which] would cause the overall price range to come down as we have seen with the iPad; [where we] also had a price erosion happen as the smaller version came out.

I like this

Coming from a 4S (still happy with it) I'm curious if they have cheaped out on the screen. A lot of hands on have said its essentially the 5 in a new shell.
If that's true then I'm in day 1.

The 3GS was my first iPhone. I remember how slippy the phone got from sweaty palms due to it's plastic back. Had to get a case for it.

Think the iPhone 5C will feel similar.

Might jump on the iphone train next year (still in dumb phone world) and for some reason the 5c looks appealing from a durability point of view.

Getting the 5S, but these look pretty nice. Might get one for my parents.

That said, those cases look amazingly... weird. Do not want.

Was interested in a cheaper iPhone that competed with upper mid range android phones. It didnt have to be nexus 4 cheap but somewhere in the 400 range would have been just as acceptable.

What I got was something to replace last years model in the pricing chart that with worse build quality and a higher profit margin. :/

Hopefully this is like the first Macbook air. Overpriced but once they its a transition device to drive manufacturing costs down and the next model will be the real one you should buy.

I'm one of the people who was looking to buy this phone off contract but the price is too much. In general I think cell phones and plans are a ripoff. I have a GoPhone and want to pick up a new phone and slap my existing sim card into it, which is why I'm looking for something off contract. I currently pay $25 for 3 months and I often have money left over, which rolls over to the next quarter.

Can anyone recommend a phone in the sub 400 range?

They should have made a black version of this. As it stands, it looks like this phone was made for middle school and high school students and grandparents.

Holly shit... thats insane. Definitely not a budget phone.

I don't understand, is Google the only company that can make a good budget phone with the correct price or what?

Who said it was a budget phone?

It's the standard price cut they always do for the previous model phone. Why are people surprised by this?

Oh and in this case, it's not even the old model. It's a new model with slightly increased specs from the old model, so it's better than usual.

Yeah and you're in the minority in tsat.

Everyone who's choking on Google's cock needs to remember that they made this niche device but have barely spent the time or money explaining the benefits of a cheap, off-contract phone.
Really? So you don't see the benefits of pay $30 a month vs $100. Someone's choking on cock, and it's not Google's.

What's the point of those holes anyway? Better grip? Looks rather uncomfortable.

So that the cover is less durable and rips more easily, and so that it gets hooked on random parts of your clothing.

Its pretty simple:

A typical Iphone consumer only supports Apple accessories. So once the cover gets destroyed they will replace it will the same wacky official Apple cover. The cover will be destroyed many times, but the Iphone consumer will not learn his/her lesson and will continue buying the official Iphone cover; thinking its superior in quality then all over options. Apple will PROFIT $$$

Maybe I've crossed into full Luddite territory but I like it. How does this preorder process work? Can I preorder and just pick it up at a store or is it for shipping devices to me only?

Pretty much everyone pre-announcement, that's why a lot of us cheapies are disappointed it's not.

Ah, well that's your fault for taking rumors/speculation as fact :P

This is why Apple will never meet, let alone exceed, expectations anymore. Too much rumor milling, etc.

Can we go further back and post photos of Nintendo's Play it Loud GameBoys and the many N64 colors they released?

releasing things in different colors isn't really something you can necessarily attribute to any one company. Fucking swatch watches were doing it in the 80s and probably someone before them. I doubt Apple or Nokia sat around ripping off a Nintendo campaign from 1993.

soooo apples "budget" phone is more expensive then the uber flagship androids S4, One hell even high tier lumias

what.....a......fawking.......joke

Yep. Yep yep yep. In fact, I remember seeing photos in this very thread pages ago with old rotary phones in colors.

Nokia is acting like they invented color though.

The internals are the same as the 5 no? The only thing new about the phone is the plastic case, and I'm sure that costs next to nothing.

The purpose of this phone is not to save you money; it's to save Apple money since this thing is probably considerably cheaper to manufacture compared the old iPhone 5. It's all about dat profit margin, not market share. It's not about selling more iPhones for less; It's not about flooding the market with cheap plastic iPhones; it's about selling something that costs $100 to make for $550.

Apple has never, and will never, sacrifice profit for market share. Look at PC manufacturers. Lenovo sells a shitton of laptops but their profit margins are so thin they barely make any money off them.

As for who is going to buy this? Millions of people actually, who think this is 50% cheaper than the 5S because it's $99 compared to $199 on contract, when it's actually closer to just 5% cheaper in the long run since they'll end up paying thousands in monthly plan payments no matter what phone they get. Paying $2400 for a 5C makes no sense when you can pay $2500 for a 5S. But most people seem to have trouble thinking beyond the short term; the Carriers thrive on this model and that's why they keep the subsidies.

The US Carrier / Manufacturer / Consumer ecosystem is just quite bizarre.

What are you talking about? I'm not talking about plans here, I'm talking about phones. The truth of the matter is, Pay-As-You go and cheaper plans aren't a big thing in the US. Look at all the customers Verizon, ATT, and Sprint have. Most don't give a shit about their plan. If everyone were clamoring to go for off-contract phones, don't you think T-Mobile would be 4th place? Most people will see a "cheap" iPhone at 99 dollars and never second guess that they're paying a retarded amount of money each month to use it. That's just the way it goes.

To be fair, I would've loved it if this were cheap and off-contract. I don't want to get locked down on a 5S but I'm not pissing my pants getting angry at Apple for something they don't have to do. They profit off of hardware and if people are stupid enough to buy it then that's that.

This is way too expensive if aimed at emerging markets. People here in Asia mostly buy phones unlocked so I really don't get the high price.

Alongside and in addition to this; I think the C is the new iPad mini. Not the latest tech but more appealing in [insert] ways. They undercut the margin on iPad mini more than C (look at how stockholders punished them, the massive stock buyback, now this), but I think this is the same move we saw with air and pro, ipad mini vs 4, and now this.

I'm really interested in the numbers on the overlapping $199 S vs C price point. They'll never break it out on earnings but I think those sales results will say a lot; about future storage upgrades, pressure on wireless carriers for bandwidth restrictions, and related stuff they could sway with the cash pile.

Those unlocked prices in the UK 469£ for 16gb and 549£ for 32gb is more than the S4 and way more than the HTC One currently unlocked. This is not budget.

really? wow. HTC One is the best phone i've ever seen I would have thought this would come in well under that.

So I just got to watch the keynote, and fucking LOL @ Apple actually Photoshopping out the "hon" in the 5C cases for the keynote. Even they know the cases suck.

It is now. If Apple keeps the 5c around for awhile, the price will come down to where the 4s is at the moment.

This is aimed at lower tier first world markets right now, not at the emergent market. It may trickle down that path in a couple of years, if Apple is playing the long game.

The fact that anyone cares is more mindblowing than Apple's "lapse".
