Compared to the real thing:

Even this doesn't have the FCC text on it.

I think you're missing the point.

Which was?

The final result may not be to everyone's taste, but it's pretty simple to break down how they arrived at it. The holes punctuating from the bottom edge has a design identity that Ive/Apple wanted. They also chose to leave the iPhone text in the same position as every previous model and not move it simply for anal "compatibility" with a case that not everyone is going to use.

It would have looked worse if they filled in that row of holes.

Isn't editing it out an admission of a lapse? If not, why the change?

Because the "bottom half" nature of that shot, if the text was left, would have seemed to intentionally highlight the text peering through as a part of the presentation. But it wasn't a goal that they were going to explain the rationale for, it was a compromise.

Open it up to show the logo and hide the regulatory junk that they can't argue with.

There's no compatibility reasons to argue about that.

I didn't make the post to complain about the "hon". I was making the post because Apple clearly is aware of it, and making subtle efforts to conceal it. I think THAT brings a lot more attention to the matter than it would have without this Photoshopping effort by Apple.

I facetiously meant "visual compatibility". People seem to be viewing this as a blemish when from five feet away no one's going to see it, they're going to see two contrasting colors.

Well, I guess I agree. If they thought the compromise was worth it, they shouldn't have made what was probably an 11th hour change to that slide.

That's a good point, but the bottom of the phone should be in hand and hidden from view.

The human eye can spot oddities like crazy, and I think that they saw it too. I wanna know why it's not "fixed".

I'm curious to see how the updates go for this model.

I think they've done a nice job with the look, etc., of the 5c, it's just that the price is too close to the 5s.

I had thought they were going to replace the 4s with this model, not the 5. By making it more capable than I had anticipated, I wonder if a price drop rather than a spec bump may come next year.

Because their design statement with the case probably said "Allow the underlying color through for a two tone look", and without scrapping the entire holes idea, all of these bandaid "fixes" look worse:

Seriously. The way I would have done it is the second one. But with circles on the left and right and the word "iPhone" in the filled area. Or just move the word iPhone up to the logo like they should have.

A thing I noticed is that in the CGI animations they made for the Keynote and commercials don't have it showing through. It's like they knew it looked bad, but couldn't move the text. Or didn't want to. It's very un-Apple-like.

an oval around iPhone and adjust the circle pattern as necessary to align with that, blocking out reg approvals.

Why do Apple's products still have the FCC text, anyway? Even my first gen Nexus 7 had it as an easily removable sticker. I figured that Apple would have been the first to be all over that shit.

probably easier (cheaper) to print FCC on every unit than to segment. i mean why not, you earned it. from my job i know that FCC is very important for many, but for things like sales back into the US or whatever. not at all important in "emerging markets" (China aka the exporters).

Yeah this blows my mind. Pretty much everybody else has done away with the regulatory small prints from their physical products.

Don't Apple have the transparent protective foil on their products when they ship? That could double up as a sticker for the small print.

Maybe their attention to detail is simply slipping - like not updating the iWorks icons to match iOS7 aesthetic months after every other icon was changed.

You still have to have some place on those to show a serial number, product number etc, surely? Apple likes to keep it simple, have all useful and regulatory info in one place. It doesn't look bad.

Btw if any of those has a battery cover, which I'm pretty sure some do, your point is moot (regarding that device). Apple does what it does on the outside because of their single piece approach to devices.

As for iWork, I'm pretty sure that they're holding out for the iPad event to show a new version with iOS 7 looks and revamped functionality.

So is Apple's new plan basically to take last year's top model, and push it plastic every year? So the next year will have the iPhone 6, the 5sc and the 5c? I can see that being the model from here out. Only the flagship is metal every year.

just want to say that if you're on Sprint or Verizon, you may want to avoid the iPhone 5C. still no SVDO and still no SVLTE (only phones with no SVLTE on Verizon/Sprint are the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C). and if you're on Sprint, it's not Tri-Band so you won't be future-proof for when Sprint starts deploying LTE on Band 41...

I'm sorry, but you must be confusing the companies here. Nokia didn't write this
I'm not talking about that! I'm talking about this:

Which is really silly since we've already established that neither Apple nor Nokia nor Nintendo nor anyone in the last 50 years invented the concept of colored electronics. Nokia's acting like Apple saw their silly Windows phones there and said "Make them look like that!"

Apple's just being apple with that block of text really. They like to hyperbolize everything. Unapologetically Plastic and Magical.

That 5c ad copy is schlock and Nokia's twitter attempts are just plain dumb. Trying to piggyback on Breaking Bad especially so, seeing as how that show is associated with throwaway flip phones and Hello Kitty.

I still don't get it. Nokia did a dig at Apple on Twitter, much like other companies do after the unveiling of a competitions product. How does it imply they invented colors? Fact is, like it or not, that Nokia uses colors in their whole range of their silly products, from the very low range to the higher end, while the 5C is the first iPhone with proper color options. That's why some people (with some kind of disorder, it seems) associate the 5C with Nokia phones.

And you don't want to talk about Apple's bullshit ad text, because it's Apple just being Apple? That's hilarious.

Not my words. I'm out. Nope. I'm out of this conversation. I have no idea where you're going with it. I just want to talk about the phone. Not who invented what.

This is the one I'm getting I think. Despite everything. I'll have to get a contract and it's just a hundred.

I've had an LG Shine for the past five years so any upgrade at all is welcome. That and I really don't need a fingerprint scanner. At all.

I have to say I think the 5C is a rip off. Its more or less just an iPhone 5 with a cheap plastic shell instead of aluminum yet they are still charging the same price that the 5 would have been going by the past pricing model once the 5S comes out.

If someone offered to trade me a brand new 5C for my used 5 there is no way I would do it, and if i didnt have any and could only spend $100 i'd hurry up and get a 5 before the 5C takes over

The "hon" thing seems like a pretty stupid oversight as well, and the fact that they photoshopped it out of the press conference shots basically proves that they thought it looks stupid but still chose to go forward with it anyway.

If they wanted to do colors i think they should have just made them like the current gen iPod Touches.

If they are going the cheap plastic route I would have liked to have seen the 4S discontinued, the 5C the new entry level free-on-contract iPhone with hardware specs somewhere between the 4S and 5, the iPhone 5 being bumped down to $99 on contract and the 5S $199 on contract. at least that way the screen size would be consistent across the board and the 5C wouldn't feel like a rip off

but despite all that the 5S seems like a worthy upgrade and I will probably end up getting one. I just wish that they would have kept the black/slate instead of black/grey and that they would finally make 32GB the new entry level option

Except that never would have happened because the whole point of the 5c's existence is that the 5's cost to build hasn't gone down enough over the past year that they could drop the price $100 and still make a comparable profit margin on it.

I'd also wager that the iPhone 5c's plastic is nice enough that most people really will not give a shit, ala the Lumia line.

While your first comment MAY be true, I'm guessing it's more than just the cost to build with the aluminium. Maybe other costs, or just they want increased margins this time around, most likely figuring they can get away with it because it's shiny new. Apple have their road map planned out for years in advance in regards to pricing and cost.

Personally, I LOVE the 5C...

The cases seem like such an oversight, though. They should've just put the holes at the top two thirds, thus making the hole for the camera less obvious, and being able to highlight the colour differences around their logo.

I disagree. Even with the "hon" the design is better as is with the holes at the bottom.

Actually, now that I think about, I think you're right.

The holes are actually a good design in general. I wonder if the 'hon' is blown out of proportion. Like maybe you get over it in reality?

It's not a big deal to me though, seeing as:

1) I wouldn't get a case

2) I probably wouldn't get a 5c over a 5s (that camera is too amazing).

I wonder what next year holds - 5c bumped down to low end, new 6 and.... New 6C? Will it have a new design or have 5C design?

I feel the same way but if there were one phone and case I would consider getting, it would be this because I think it's actually a pretty cool look. I would never even think to put a case on the 5S I'm getting and I never put one on my 4S.

The holes are actually a good design in general.

But isn't it going to let all sorts of dust and dirt and crap build up inside the holes? I know people don't have pockets full of dirt or whatever, but stuff gets in there nonetheless, and you'll end up with rings showing on your phone when you take the case off. I don't really get it.

The fact that anyone cares is more mindblowing than Apple's "lapse".

The fact that Apple spend a huge amount of time in press conferences emphasising just how much time they spend on making the tiny details perfect, like they are the kings of design - means they are completely open to being pulled up for basic goofs like that.
