But isn't it going to let all sorts of dust and dirt and crap build up inside the holes? I know people don't have pockets full of dirt or whatever, but stuff gets in there nonetheless, and you'll end up with rings showing on your phone when you take the case off. I don't really get it.

It's a case more for personalising and style, rather than dust/dirt-proofing - it's plastic phone, it doesn't need it at all for that! If rings appear when you take it off, just wipe it.

It will provide some protection from bumps and opportunities for scratches (like setting it on a table).

But again, yeah, I don't care either way since I wouldn't use it.

It's funny, i like the yellow one so much, I'd consider getting it over a 5...but I wouldn't put a yellow case onto my 5 :/

Worst color combination ever?

iphone5c_cases_gallery_yellow_pink.jpg

That's Connect Four.

I still don't really see why they're releasing this thing. I mean it's not budget or anything so is it purely for people who want something small and colourful?

So im guessing no one preordered this thing and its going to be a madhouse next friday for 5s?
I actually know a few people who really want the C and preordered tonight. I originally was one of them but then decided to get just a regular 5 for half the price (upgrading from an 8gb iPhone 4).

The contract prices for the 5C are ridiculous! Why is it so much more than last year's iPhone 5 contracts? I'm scared to think of the 5S prices...

What are you talking about? Contract pricing on 5C is 99. Half of what iPhone 5 was. 5S is 200. Same as iPhone 5 was.

I'm just happy to see Apple selling a dock again. Won't have to use my makeshift OG iPhone dock with Lightining connector on the 5 anymore!

In the UK the contract price for the 5C is more than last year's price for the iPhone 5. On my carrier it is about £6 a month more for the same tariff.

http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Devices/Apple/iPhone_5c?tab=Features.&memory=16&colour=Blue

Last year I paid £59 for the iPhone 5 and I pay £34 a month. The same tariff is now £41 a month and the phone is £49 upfront

So, are any of the regular posters in this thread actually buying the 5c?

Because the tech-minded side of me wants to to get the 5s because it has the better insides.

But the practical side of me knows that the 5c will be more than suitable for what I actually will be using my phone for. And, if I had to be honest, I VASTLY prefer the 5c's design.

Besides, just putting it out there, but all the articles I've read about why nobody should "waste their time" with the 5C and just sound like tech masturbation that won't matter much in actual, real world usage:

--"The 5S has a 64bit processor!!! Sure, most apps won't be able to take advantage of it, and despite our best pandering it's going to suck your battery dry, and it'll be YEARS before we see anything more than minor speed bumps in real-world applications of the phone, but man! 64BITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think of all the next-gen fitness apps!"

--"THE CAMERA HAS BIGGER PIXELS! Sure, other than that it's the same basic camera and any sort of bump to its performance is going to ultimately be lost when those photos you take get run through Facebook and Instagram's shitty compression algorithms. BUT BIGGER PIXELS."

--"FINGERPRINT SCANNER!!! Nevermind that plenty of laptops have fingerprint scanners that go unused because they're annoyingly unreliable. FINGERPRINT SCANNER!
"

Coming from the iPhone 4s, there's just nothing in the 5S that screams MUST-HAVE FEATURE, meanwhile you have to put up with that mediocre design and $200 price tag. Seriously, all the excuses for why the 5S is worth it sound like the same pleading we got two years ago over how Siri was going to CHANGE HOW WE INTERACT WITH EVERYTHING EVER. Fast forward to today, and Siri is just another in a long line of voice-recognition software that doesn't get used.

The iPhone 5C might be my new iPod Nano. And fuck, I loved my iPod Nano (3rd gen master race, homie).

How do you know the A7 chip sucks battery life? Apple says it's at least as good as the previous model... and the journalists who tried the fingerprint scanner say it worked well. How can you complain about articles which are unfairly biased against the 5C when you seem to be at least as unfairly biased against the 5S?

This is probably the worst post I've seen against the 5S so far

I'm not biased against the 5s. Honestly, both phones are in my price range. I'm skeptical of the 5s.

Apple didn't say that the first 5 would have terrible battery life, but that seems to be one of the biggest and most wide-spread complaints against the phone. Apple says a lot of things.

And journalist also said Siri would redefine how people use phones. Journalists say a lot of things about Apple phones when they're announced. I'm basing my opinion on the fingerprint readers I've used irl.

I'm with roy. What I really wanted was the 4/4S shell with the 5S internals/screen size because the 5/5S are butt-ugly. The 5C is much more appealing to me in every aspect but specs (but seriously, who complained about the 5's performance?), and the bump in battery life over the 5 is a nice bonus.

Specs are so off the charts nowadays on all these new phones that the physical design of the phone is more important than what's inside anyway. My hands need to be happy.

The rated battery life is improved compared to the 5. The CPU and GPU are rated at double the 5 speed even with that improved battery life.

The camera is better, especially with the dual flash and ability to take burst shots and 120fps video. Instagram and Facebook filters won't change the fact that you're getting better colors indoors, the ability to take multiple shots quickly is great for movement (I take many photos on a bike or in a moving vehicle), and 120 fps camera will be great for things like Vine.

The fingerprint sensor works much differently from those laptop scanners. You aren't swiping your finger for one, you can use it on different finger angles, and you can pay for stuff with it.

- The A7 isn't just about 64-bit. This is a 100% CPU and GPU speed increase. This affects things as basic as web page rendering to something as intensive like games and photo editing. And battery life is unlikely to be compromised, since it's most likely built on a smaller manufacturing process.
- It's not the same basic camera. Things like a larger sensor, larger aperture, and auto image stabilization will make clear improvements to photos. Not sure why Instagram or Facebook is relevant. People post DSLR photos to both sites, too.
- The fingerprint sensor is nothing like the cheap stuff used in existing laptops.

--Gaming and photo-editing, exactly what I'm doing on my cell phone. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that a lot of these improvements look good on paper, but won't amount to a meaningful increase in real-world usage. HEW is doing hardcore photo editing on their damn phones? And I say this as someone who edits photos for a living. Anybody who is doing any sort of serious photo editing is not using their phones to do it in any capacity; and for the average person who wants to quickly touch up a photo and add a filter before uploading it to Facebook/Twitter/Instagram? Hell, the 4s is still MORE than adequate.

--I appreciate the improvements to the camera, but the average person isn't using their phone's camera to take the sort of pictures where those small improvements would really matter, imo.

--we'll just have to see about this.

Personally, the 5s comes off as the phone Apple HAS to make to preceed the phone that will really shake things up and so they can have something to attach the $200 price tag to. But, until we get that phone, I think I'll be more than comfortable with the 5c.

Amen, sis.

Preach it tho

5C is going to sell gangbusters, and specs war is over everyone. It's about battery life, personalization, and (vaguely defined) user experience now.

The most popular phone-related threads on GAF are the monthly iOS gaming threads, and games are the most popular apps on the App Store.

Many people take indoor photos.

I think increased battery life and faster web browsing are not just stats that look good on paper, something you seem to ignore.

CPU: Who said anything about hardcore photo editing? We're not working with raw here. I'm talking about basic adjustments you can do in iPhoto or VSCO Cam. That stuff is definitely not instantaneous on the 4S. If you don't care about speed improvements like that, then this phone is not for you. But don't assume that everyone has the same standards of what's adequate to you.

Camera: People usually don't know what they want until they see it. A friend was perfectly fine with her 4 until I showed her how much better the 5 is in low light. Every improvement makes a difference.

So yes, I do think the 5S will make have noticeable real world differences to the 5C. It's just a matter of judging what you're content with. Going by your post, where you say the 4S is more than adequate, the 5S is not for you. That's not true for everyone else though. It's hard for me to even go back to A5-based devices because the difference is very noticeable to me.

The only thing I'll say is that Flickr just updated their app to support live filter viewing on even the 4s. So if people can't get that to work on the 5? they're shitty coders and the app probably isn't worth using.

And I think you're right: the 5s isn't for me. But I have to agree with Leona: I think phones have progressed to a point that I don't need (or even find the value) in forking over $200 for what is ultimately just a minor spec-bump for a phone that, when you cut through all the fat, has the same basic feature-set as a phone that came out two years ago. This is especially true for the person who ALSO has a tablet.

Honestly, this would be a tougher decision to make if Apple also made the 5s with the 5c's design. I've always hated the look of the 5 - it really lost that simple/streamlined design that Apple's known for. The 5c is simple, straight-forward, and gorgeous. I just love the look of it, it'll be more than capable to handle anything I would use for, the price is appealing, and my hands need to be happy.

I'm just past the point of feeling like I need to drop $200 dollars on a phone just because it has a slightly better camera, or a slightly faster processor. Once we get to a point where we're once again introducing devices that truly do represent a huge break from the standard, then I'll jump in.

It sounds like a simple "I don't like the look of the 5" instead of trying to downplay the changes probably would have avoided the back and forth you guys have going. In that case, I'd say yes the 5C definitely sounds like it's more for you. And I imagine it would be a cheaper purchase as well. Personally at this point (obviously I'd have to see it in person) I have no real interest in the look of the 5C and think the 5 design is excellent. But to each his/her own.

Not really, because it's the perceived value of those changes that make the 5s so unappealing to me. :/

I kind of agree with Roy and Leona tbh. I love the look of the 5C. (But i'm partial to bright bold colours especially dat green) The only thing that I really care about on the 5S is the fingerprint scanner because I hate typing in my itunes password.

So either I shell out an extra 100$ now to be able to scan in or wait till the 6 or 6S where it's been more streamlined and tested in the real world, and avoid the early adopter headaches.

(I'm also going to be switching carriers. My cellphone and I are a mess atm)

If the decision would actually be tougher simply if the phone had the 5C shell, then yes I'd say it's influencing your 'perceived value' quite a bit.

But regardless, I'd imagine that is part of the point of the 5C; a completely different option that may better fit the needs of some users. Nothing wrong with that.

I feel disgusted about myself, but after the inicial shock at the 5c prices (because my - and everyone else's - expectations were that Apple was gonna expand their market with an aggressively priced, albeit plastic-made, iPhone), these:

Just look genuinely great to me.

I'm on that metal-made iPhone (5) master race, but I'll be slightly jelly of people with these. Great set of colours if this photo is any indication. Gotta see them live.

I definitely start to see why Apple did this. Further differentiation for the flagship (otherwise more people would be like "meh, I'll just take the 5"), and the slightly cheaper version also has its unique characteristics that can potentially call some more costumers over, like the hipster tumblr crowd. And happy colourful people in general for whom the iPhone so far looked like a very boring phone.

I still want to see Apple going for the killing with a $300 iPhone one of these years.

Never happen. Apple always have and always will go for the almighty margin.

Apple as a whole or Apple with the iPhone?

The $329 iPad, the $200-$300 "one celular chip short of being a phone" iPod touch are still Apple products, not subsidised and they still have healthy margins.

The thing is, Apple still has that much power over the phone market. But I believe their "iPhone mini" moment should still come one day, just like it came in pretty much all their other products.

The iPhone5 and 5S design is super elegant, but ever so slightly pretentious. These colourful plastic iPhones make them even more pretentious in a way. Just kind of too fancy for some people.

These phones are much more 'everyday, everybody' phones. I like them a lot.

You are right.

I cringe every time I see a teen with an iPhone 5. It just doesn't compute.

Ah man, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. I don't think so, but well...who knows.
No, I was not. Haha. But I definitely can see it.

It's true though. Case in point my sister (or half-sister) has a 16 year old girl cousin that sports an iPhone 5, black at that. It's like a small girl wearing a big man's watch.

Not that teens parents should give their kids crazy expensive phones to begin with, but none of that is my business of course.

i'd pick the 5s just for the better camera and fingerprint scanner...but i'd say the white 5c looks pretty good to me. 5/5s feel worse in my hand than the 4/4s. almost too thin...that i think i might drop it easily.

I'm assuming not many people here ordered one of these. I got a shipment notification for the one I ordered for work! Wooo!
