Is Crysis 1 still the best looking PC game?

Crysis 1
Metro 2033
The Witcher 2
BF3

Are probably the top 3. Crysis 1 with mods is absolutely ridiculous. Metro 2033 is actually pretty unoptimized.

I personally prefer the look of The Witcher 2, but I don't really know much about the technical side of graphics stuff so I'm just going by perception.

In what aspect? Best looking water, most realistic look, best art style?

Project Cars is slowly becoming a contender quickly for graphical / realistic look king.

Eh, I actually think DX11 Crysis 2 looks much better overall. I suspect Crysis 3 will become the new king when all is said and done.

The Witcher 2 doesn't really compete simply because the animation is rather flimsy.

You should probably be more specific when you say "best looking", since that's kinda vague and allows personal opinions about the game's art style and such to be factored into the answers you'll see. At this point, Crysis 1 isn't the best looking PC game (speaking technically), the sequel surpasses it, but I do prefer lush jungles to war torn cities.

I personally think crysis 2, witcher 2, and bf3 look better. I always thought it looked rather bland. I think people like the fact it still needs a hefty system to run well. Heck I think Rage looks better in sections just because of the smooth framerates and the unique backgrounds.

Technically Crysis 2 certainly has better graphics but because of the art direction I still think that Crysis looks better.

In downscaled 15 megapixel bullshots that don't have any aliasing in the foliage it is, but if you play it at a realistic resolution it isn't. Witcher 2 looks better.

RAGE, Mirror's Edge, and BF3 were probably the best-looking top3 I've seen in a while

Forgot about Mirror's Edge. I am going to pick up Rage eventually but I'm waiting for it to fall to the $5 range.

Battlefield 3 really does look amazing, but you have to remove the hud to get a real feel for the game.

Dark Souls art design actually is reallly amazing. Not the best graphically, but with the PC fidelity settings it really comes into its own at times.

No. I replayed it recently and it actually looked surprisingly dated, especially the lighting. Some of the textures were pretty blurry as well, and it has poor IQ because it doesn't let you combine hardware AA with software transparency AA (so you're stuck with either jagged objects or jagged foliage). Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, and The Witcher 2 all have it beat by a noticeable margin.

Still, it's a great looking game. Remarkable how well it's held up considering it's just about 5 years old.

Battlefield 3 has better looking natural environments.

Crysis 1 is in an odd place of being the only game with full dense jungles like that, so while it is visually inferior to other games, there isn't something to directly compare it's particular strength to. Given that, it still needs mods to be seriously considered.

I actually find vanilla Crysis kind of ugly. The textures just aren't that great, and when your entire world consists of poor looking leaves and grass it really takes me out of the experience. Mods help, but fucking hell the engine is terrible. I still can't play the game comfortably at high settings with mods because it's so poorly optimized.

And yet, I can play Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 no problem on the same system, both games which I believe are better looking.

Crysis 2 modded in particular has to be the most graphically impressive game out there today. Some people's irrational hate of it seems to keep them from giving it the credit it deserves.

Yeah Source engine can sometimes look great. :)

That's not Source. Mirror's Edge runs on Frostbite.

First impressions are everything, and when the game came out, it was in a pretty poor place.
