Is DOOM the most technically impressive game out today?

Have you played an FPS at the pace of DOOM before? 60FPS is vital and it should be aimed for as an absolute minimum. 144FPS is ideal but harder to achieve.

i tried it at 144fps but it looked too floaty and uncinematic

the game looks much better at a smooth 28 than 144. your mind does a better job filling in those frame gaps than the designers do. much like horror movies, the mind's imagination is better than what the silly game designers actually fill it with. they should have just locked it to 30 and called it a day rather than waste time with their inferior optimizations.

Nothing like some good old fashioned trolling eh?

Yes. I bought the game 3 days ago after there was a gmg rebate and i heard about vulkan support added, i played it fully in vulkan on my AMD setup and it was amazing, sooooooo smooth. The gameplay is fantastic too, really a good return to fps mazes, the map designs are top notch.

You made that one a bit too obvious.

As a quotient of graphics and performance, probably. There are likely a few games that overall look better and might use more effects, but don't run nearly as smoothly.

Pretty limited scope (which is perfectly ok for the game, mind you); you rarely see big open environments.
.

...
so what, not every game has to have big, open environments to be good, or well designed, or technically impressive, or even ambitious.

DOOM works and looks well as it is, regardless of the "sacrifices" they had to make, im sure the dev team is happy with the result.

I know it's a completely different game but... GTA V in 4K max settings is like experiencing moving art. The sheer density of textures at such a clarity, it is the most I've ever been impressed technically by a game.

...The question of this thread is whether it's the most technically impressive game in the history of the industry, at which point these kinds of details do become very important!

If the thread was entitled "Hey is this game technically impressive?" this would be a different discussion.

I just beat it around 3 this morning. Definitely one of my favorite first person shooter campaigns in a long while. The last fight wasn't as fun as the first boss fight though I guess it didn't seem to fit as well. Nevertheless, I still had a lot of fun. I wish ID would release the soundtrack. Having that soundtrack shredding while I ripped through the hordes of demons was so gnarly.

Battlefront looks better imo.

Battlefront kills it in the outdoor environments. Doom has the amazing indoor environments.

I think outdoor is a little harder to do though as you have to worry about things like foliage, water, etc. Things that Doom doesn't have to worry about. But god damn does that stuff look good in Battlefront. Amazing lighting too.

From the PC Screenshot thread ^^

From Berdu ^^

In terms of pure visuals, I'd have to say no. It's competent, but it's not really doing anything groundbreaking, IMO.

Where it truly shines is in the engine's performance. It runs far better than it has any right to, with all that's going on, and has the highest framerate of any other current game on my system at max settings. I'm giggling like a schoolboy watching it run at 100+ on a regular basis, even in the middle of a big fight.

It's very enjoyable, but I'm not really being floored by its graphics.

Of course, that may be because I'm playing it in 1080p on a TV.

The game definitely looks great but playing on doom computer monitor vs a AAA console game on a big screen means you lose some of the immersion and visceral impact in a comparison; something you can't overcome with numbers.

I just saw a video on Digital Foundry with the game running on Vulkan, game set to max (no Nightmare) on R9 Fury X on 4k. Was hitting a playable 55-65 fps. No v-sync on in the video so there was tearing, but it'd be pretty smooth if you had a free sync monitor. Fucking crazy.

I think a distinction needs to be made between "best looking" and "most technically impressive" and a lot of people aren't making that distinction. Are there games out there that look better? Maybe. Technology wise though, I can't really think of another game that does the stuff the new id tech engine does, with the performance it has.

I don't even know what this means
Since we all know that it's impossible to connect a PC to a large display, and since Doom definitely isn't available on PS4 and XB1, it's completely impossible to experience Doom on a large screen. Therefore AAA console games are more immersive and have greater visceral impact.

ok,

of course, its not the best looking game ever made, but they were talking about the sacrifices to make the game run at 60fps. wich, to me is very impressive as graphics can be a lot of things, including framerate.

but true, no point for that in this thread,

Are you for real? Ever heard of a HDMI cable? Or steam link? Or sitting less than 2 feet away from a 30" monitor with a better response time, refresh rate and better colour accuracy than what you could get on the vast majority of TVs?

Lol.

Yeah it probably is one of the most technically impressive games out today.
Some people in this thread think "technically impressive"="good looking". Well that isn't the case, and DOOM is certainly not the best looking game out today.

Please be sarcasm, if not then holy shit...2016 and people still unironically believe this? HDMI how do they work?

Don't know about you guys, but I sit about 2-3 feet from my computer monitor when I play games. It takes up more of my vision than console games do on a MUCH larger screen 7-8 feet away. So.... my PC monitor still feels larger and more "immersive" in that sense.

Seemed like a completely random and pointless argument though. Anyways....

I'm not exactly the most knowledgeable when it comes to graphic rendering techniques so forgive my ignorance, but can someone explain why Doom is more "technically impressive" than something like Battlefront? Because to me, Battlefront seems to have some of the best foliage, particles, lighting, and realistic materials that I've seen. Doom has great reflections, particles, decently high-poly monster models, and... blood? The TSSAA is nice too I suppose. Not sure what else. Enlighten me.

No. Uncharted 4 occassionally tricked me into thinking I was watching live action footage. DOOM is great, but not something that immediately stands out technically.

It sounds like you're only looking at these games from a graphical perspective. Uncharted 4 is probably the better looking game but DOOM still looks great and runs at 60fps on consoles. That's honestly more impressive to me.

Nothing earth shattering. I guess what you people like is the artistic direction, because technically it's not that amazing (mega texture is a very inefficient technique for meh results but id is committed to it for some dumb reason).

If you want something that's really technically on top, check out Frostbite (Battlefront and BF1).

How so? It was my understanding that it's very efficient(since you avoid loading in most non visible texels), unless you're talking about disc space, the most boring measure of efficiency lol.

It's about as impressive as Wolfenstein The New Order running at 60fps on consoles before Doom and Rage running at 60fps on last gen consoles before that -- that is to say, "eh, I guess?"

Doom looks WAY better than wolfenstein and runs at the same framerate.

Rage looked good, but didn't really compete with the best looking games at the time. Doom does, in spite of spending 1/2 the time rendering as most other games.

I still haven't played it but just from watching visuals its easily up there. Not only does the game look insane but its also 60fps everywhere.

Fucking crazy

Battlefront on PC is still the most amazing thing I've played though

didn't say it was :P
And 1080/60 on consoles, looking like this, is a big deal.

Visually DOOM looks incredible even on YouTube. I was playing the demo on my PC and was shocked at how good it looked while not on the highest settings.

The game looks visually amazing, but there are games have better animations and seem to have more destructible environments, which can add a lot IMO.

Being the first game I tried right after buying a GTX 1080, Doom blew my mind at 1440p maxed 100fps.

Ran great, looked and felt beautiful, it sure impressed me.

Is DOOM the most technically impressive game out today?

Doom is great, nice balance of tech and visuals... but it is really nowhere close to the technically excellence that can be found in Uncharted 4 and Order 1886. Tech in those game is really on a level above not only Doom, but almost all other games. They excell in not only enviroment visuals, but have industry leading animation systems, charachter rendering, seamless switches from gameplay to realtime cinematics. The scope of those games is much larger than what Doom has to offer.

There is a case though for Doom winning the "technically impressive" award against other 60fps games.

Uncharted 4 easily, people think that if a game looks amazing at 60 it automatically wins, U4 looks absolutely incredible and by a significant gap from DOOM, so obviously they used the extra rendering time very very well.

For me nothing touches U4, there are moments that I feel like I'm controlling a moving concept art.
