Is Dragon Age Inquisition PC version unplayable with Mouse and Keyboard?

Thanks to the OP for this thread, had no clue about proper controller support. Played for a couple hours with K+M yesterday and everything felt super clunky.

Used Xbone controller today and everything feels just right. 100% better experience
it doesn't sound encouraging at all.

I'm thinking of just giving up on my free PC version I got and just go pick up a PS4 copy honestly...

I dunno if you have played it yet, but with some control tweaking, you can mitigate most of the shittier control issues.

It is not ideal, but it it is functional enough that you eventually get used to it.

..huh?

I have been playing with keyboard and mouse for 40+ hours with zero problems whatsoever. How can you even play with a controller effectively when you have 10 spells per-character? Seems incredibly counter-intuitive.

Been playing nothing but KB+mouse since starting with controller and really missing the flexibility of a keyboard.

It took some getting used to but I'm 100% fine with it now. It is perfectly playable with the KB+mouse and even superior in a lot of ways (the hotkeys, quicksave, the mouselook > analog look)

I enjoyed playing Dragon Age Origins with keyboard and mouse and was expecting the same layout but was sorely mistaken. It was nearly impossible for me to click on things like ladders and rifts unless I was lined up PERFECTLY. It became so frustrating I gave up after 20 minutes. People liken it to MMO controls, which is completely valid, and a large part of why I never got into MMOs. Ever since switching to the Xbox360 controller it's become clear this was primarily designed to be played on controllers.

I switched to gamepad from keyboard / mouse and will probably stay with it, even though I usually prefer kb/m.

Since I spend so much time wandering / navigating and harvesting materials, etc., controller navigation is just easier rather than pressing directional keys all the time in addition to jump / search / interact, etc. (all with one hand). If right-clicking with a mouse had proper auto-movement attached it wouldn't be as much of an issue, but since the game currently requires you to position yourself right next to every object you want to interact with, it's easier to just use analog controls for positioning.

But some parts of gamepad control feel like a downgrade. Navigating menus, definitely (though selling items is now less cumbersome). Using abilities in combat also - I hate holding down RT to auto-attack, then also try to hit RB to use an ability. Also, the number of times I've wanted to hit LT to bring up my secondary list of abilities, only to hit LR which pauses the game and brings up the potion menu...

Also, for some inexplicable reason the game no longer shows you info / health on the enemy you're attacking when you use a gamepad, so I have no idea half the time what level of enemies I'm fighting unless I switch to tactical view and highlight them.

Started this with a m+kb. It wasn't the smoothest ride I've had but by golly, I am happy I dug up the PS4 controller.

This is absolutely playable with m+kb but with a pad the game just doesn't feel such a chore anymore.

Yeah. Spread the word.

Tried with keyboard and mouse the first hour but I couldn't handle it with the terrible tactical camera so I switched to a controller and it plays alright with that.

Still, Bioware seriously needs to consider doing a UI rework for the PC, it is pretty terrible.

I've only played MP so far, and so far it's not bad. Thank you for keyboard shortcuts such as F to loot/open doors.

I don't know whether to play Single Player of DAO first or shoot straight to DAI :\

Necrobump I know, but I'm LTTP on this game and found this thread.

I guess BioWare patched the PC controls sometime after launch or after this thread was made, but after just now trying the game out I don't think the MKB controls are unplayable, just a gigantic disappointment compared to the previous two DA games. Yes, even Dragon Age 2. But in their current state I actually still prefer the MKB controls over the gamepad controls.

At first I found BioWare's decision to have A and D turn the character instead of strafe to be baffling but I just changed the key bindings. Apparently you couldn't do that at launch? With a few other changes the controls became acceptable for me. I prefer MKB to gamepad because a lot of things like the map, inventory, and equipment are accessible either through keys or icons on the HUD, as opposed to going through the pause menu on gamepad. The real issue is just that tactical mode feels pretty useless on MKB. BioWare later let you zoom out farther but just like DA2, it's still nowhere near the isometric mode the PC version of Origins had.

Game so far overall is okay, but chock full of the most mindless style of fetch quest design. I can see why people were blown away by Witcher 3 after playing this. It's not even the same ballpark.

They patching in a rather properly functioning mouse look is the biggest change here since the release version. Game is mostly playable without issues with a constant mlook on now (F is the default trigger key). This is completely non-DA-like though but I think that it's generally better than what DAI had for K+M previously.
