Is Dragon Ball Z Super any good?

Not open for further replies.
Maybe it's all nostalgia and Goku originally always been like that (watched the dub) but yeah Super Goku is unbearable.

So ridiculously dumb.

It's pretty entertaining. I would watch the first 2 movies over the show versions though. The Future Trunks arc they have going on right now is super fun though. I've enjoyed it a lot. And yeah Goku is dumb in Super in a way he wasn't portrayed in the dub (which is what I watched) but the dub is really different from the japanese version apparently so. For example, Goku asking Krillin to let Vegeta leave earth is entirely different.

Also, we really arguing Goku is a rape victim now? Really?

yes absolutely

the current arc is one of the best db arcs ever

if you watch it skip the movie recap arcs though, and start around ep 27ish, that's where the new stuff starts

Do they not understand what it is? Goku is a dumb man-baby in super. At best he's incredibly naive throughout dragonball. For a 40 year old man to not understand kissing but understand sex is off to me. Not that he doesn't kiss, but that he is surprised by it. I'm meant to believe he is of sound mind to engage in and understand sex?
You are over thinking it.
Remember that he lives in isolation in the mountains, he was raised by a single old man til he was 6-7 (iirc)

Since fans keep asking why people don't like Super, I'll give my honest thoughts about the matter.

I don't like Super. The recent Arc with Future Trunks has been great from time to time but one great arc doesn't overwrite the 2 movie recaps, the terrible fake Vegeta or tournament arcs. The direction and writing is all over the place, (the constant going back and forth in time with hardly any plans, the majority of the characters not having a clue about what's going on for 20 or so episodes, it being about Goku and Vegeta again, the inconsistent power levels once again, and etc). A lot of Super feels like fan service towards Goku and Vegeta while abandoning the majority of the cast. While kid Trunks is getting some form of development, neither he or Goten have been anything like their Z counterparts. Even then, its nothing compared to what secondary characters in Z or the original Dragon Ball had received. They are essentially doing the same thing as GT but only added Vegeta and Future Trunks some what into the mix.

Zamasu, Beerus and Whis have been great new additions, and the whole concept of multiverse is great but the execution has been some fan-made nonsense. I don't know if anyone of you have seen the fan-made Dragon Ball Multiverse, but the whole tournament arc and the build up towards the next one is literally the same nonsense, only not as interesting. Goku Black/Zamasu is a great villain thus far, but he's been the only big threat since Majin Buu and it took them 3/4 arcs to get to this point. Then you have Goku becoming even more stupid than he was in Z. I know he's always been a carefree character but its becoming absolutely ridiculous how he's being portrayed lately. Really need the dub to fix it some what.

Now I haven't even mentioned animation and art, because it's inconsistent as hell, but comparing the awful looking episodes to a 20 year old anime in Dragon Ball Z's poor episodes is logical fallacy. You should expect better, and I'm sick and tired of people just accepting Toei's bullshit. Like Z, it can improve overtime, but the beginning of Super is just so poor, its no wonder people think GT is better.

Speaking of GT, its terrible but I don't think its worse than Super thus far. The rest of the cast did more in GT than in Super and their characterization, while I was not a fan of it, were direct continuation of how they were previously. Vegeta was inconsistent but he had admitted at the end of Z that Goku was his superior. It's Super that decided to go back to Vegeta wanting to overtake Goku plotline once again.

Overall I don't hate Super like I did a year ago, but I don't exactly love it or like it. The Future Trunks arc is good, but I'm having to struggle through the awful writing and direction. It's making the trips to the future and fighting Goku Black less interesting. The transformation that Trunks experienced makes less sense than any of the transformations in Z or GT, especially with the lack of training. (Yeah sure, Vegeta beating on his son for a few minutes was enough for Toriyama I suppose).

My biggest disappointment here is that everyone complained that GT was bad because Toriyama wasn't involved. That was the excuse that they gave me when I didn't like it either. However, Toriyama has been the biggest reason I'm not liking Super thus far.

Best wishes.

The path to enjoying Super:

1. Watch the Frieza movie.

2. Read the manga version of the Tournament Arc to save time.

3. Jump right into the current arc, which so far is the most decent one.

4. Enjoy the God-tier jazzy episode title jingle. Ba ba ba ba dadadadada ba dadadadadada da ba bababa daaa daaaa daaaaaa!

Yes, and since then he's gathered gathered a dozen friends, a wife, two kids, and a grand child. He didn't understand what a woman was at 7, understandable. He doesn't understand what kissing is while having a wife and kids, not understandable.

Why is this overthinking?

Edit: he married chichi in his late teens/early 20s and is now in his 40s-50s. He doesn't understand kissing.

I haven't watched it but to me it feels a bit redundant to go back into more Z style story arts by the time we got the the Buu arc things got ridiculous with the power levels so that being the last story made it ok but to continue from there? I don't know. I'll watch it all once it's finished airing but I do feel it seems unnecessary. For the record I like GT because it didn't take the Z approach for the most part and aged characters to at least give us something different and didn't last long enough to overstay its welcome.

Lol at the GT is better posts. Only watched up to
Black getting sent back to his own dimension
but it's already much better than GT at that point.

people don't seem to realize that goku has always been portrayed this way in the original jp dub of dbz. funimation and other dubbing studios changed his character to be much more heroic than his original bumbling idiotic self.

that's not to say that you can't dislike it, it just means that you dont actually like goku, which is fine too.

Spoil tags images doesn't show on mobile but good shit on a gif fron which I think is an episode that aired hours ago. The animation has had good moments as far back as Battle Of Gods arc. There was really know reason to respond to the dude posting episode 5, just the standard drive by shit posting.

i was just joking. Honestly speaking, DB super is actually better than DB GT with its gags and throwbacks to the classic DB. Its spiritually the real sequel whereas DB GT is a tired rehash.

Another reason to prefer the dub I guess.

He really shouldn't be as dumb as he's since he was smart enough to learn reading and math as a kid.

It was never specified or implied in the canon that he understand the concept of kissing, either as an effusion or a greeting gestire.
There are culture that don't practice "amorous" kissing but still have sex, obviously. So him not understanding it is not an implication of being violated.

Christ, not understanding kissing doesn't mean not understanding consent.

It gets pretty great, the best way to get into it would be to watch the first 2 episodes, then the movie Battle of Gods, then episode 15, then Ajay's Resurrection F Super Cut (it's a fan edit of the movie Resurrection F with lots of Super stuff put in) and then pick the show up at episode 28. The tournament arc was pretty good, but the current arc is really awesome.

Can you stomach these art quality?

i prefer the dub version of goku too tbh, but i get that this is his original personality, and it doesn't really hinder my enjoyment of the show.

i don't watch db for smart protags, i watch it for the sick fights lol

But they still understand what it is. Why are you lumping in cultures that don't practice an act with a man that doesn't understand it? Why is it so illogical to think that a man that doesn't understand the basic concept of kissing wouldn't understand the basic concept of sex?

Lol @ people posting 10 second gifs and saying the animation is better. Super has been mostly crap, but the current arc is OK. At this point it just seems like their making stuff up as they go along and just trying to have fun with this series.

If your expecting classic dbz, your going to be mostly disappointed OP. Just watch the current arc, and see if you like it. If not, then just drop the show cause I really don't see it getting better then what is now.

Dragon Ball GT didn't know what it wanted to be. The first half tried to be Dragon Ball and the later half tried to be Z.

It's not the worst thing ever, but my age also isn't the single digits like it was when I watched z, and I'm definitely feeling the fact that I'm way out of the target audience for the show.

There's nothing super does that hasn't been done far better by other anime that are just as easily accessible nowadays. I can stomach the occasional episode but I think I've managed to watch maybe 5 episodes all the way through.

The current future trunks arc is decent.

I basically skipped to the black saga/future trunks

The latest saga is great imo(black saga/future trunks). Up there with Saiyan/Freiza/Android sagas. Beucase of that I watch it.

I still think the last transformation should be Super saiyan God(red) and not Super Saiyan blue.

Red looks way better and it seems too little time was spent with that transformation. Red also looks way better

Totally stealing this amazing gif.

No. I think it's pretty lame with all the hair color changes, weird power boosts and I find it confusing who is stronger than who. There are some highlight fights and scenes but that's about it. You could look at that on YouTube.

I like it.

It´s a weekly, long-running shonen anime. It´s gonna have some parts be badly animated, some decently and some great. DBZ wasn´t any different. Beerus is one of the best additions to the cast ever. Dude is hilarious but can also be an absolute bad ass. What i actually really like about Super is, that they bring back stuff from DBZ and DB.

As for watching it. Watch Battle of Gods, then episode 15 because it´s hilarious, Frieza movie and then from episode 28 forward. No legit way of watching it right now outside of Japan. For good subs, DragonTeam or recently Batman subs if you can´t wait for DragonTeam legit.

It´s more Dragon Ball. That´s enough for me. At least check it out to see if you like it. In the end people are gonna post that they like it and others will post that they don´t. Decide for yourself.

I'll never understand the hate for SSB

SSJ2: He gets so powerful he looks the same...but with flashes of lightning every now and then!!

"SO AWESOME!!"

SSB: He uses a different type of Ki when becoming Super Saiyan, so he gets Blue Hair and a shinning aura instead of the normal yellow.

"Deviantart shit"

Overall I like it. It's style is kind of halfway between the fantasy and martial arts styles of dragon ball and the sci-fi/power levels of dragonball Z. There's lots to complain about, especially in the first two recap arcs (watch the Battle of Gods movie and skip that arc, the Frieza arc is better than the movie IMO so it's up to you), and the Pilaf gang is just annoying to me. The tournament arc was cool, but kind of a copout.
You can stop time, but I can move anyways because power levels!
The current arc is really good though, lots of world building and awesome new characters.

Because it's new and they aren't kids anymore

Whats up with Super Saiyan God. Why did a transformation get surpassed in such short time. Super Saiyan God>>>>Super Saiyan Blue. I'm sorry but it looks like ass. Trunks transformation is nice though. Super Saiyan god is also really good.

God is temporary, only reachable through the ritual. Using it allowed Goku's body to get used to God Ki.

To master it he trained with Whis, and the result was SSB.

Vegeta was so determined he jumped straight to blue, without needing the ritual first.

If you like dragon ball you will definitely find things to enjoy in Super, I think the new arc while decent is being massively over hyped on here though

It's a good show. Of course it has it's flaws. The art at times isn't the best, and yes before somebody posts do stufff. It has great moments of art quality and action as well. However the new era of computer animation just doesn't hide it as well as hand drawn does. It's slowly but surely been getting better and. Better, and the newer arcs reflect that.

It's okay. The episodes that recap the movie are atrocious, so make sure you watch the movies and skip to episode 28 when the first "original" arc starts.

Why would you prefer the wrong portrayal of a character?

Because it's not wrong. Even in the original manga, Goku wasn't a complete moron. Naive and arrogant (at times), but ultimately someone with a good head on his shoulders. DBS Goku feels like Luffy.

Animation has gotten better but it's still shit. A lot of times Goku and Vegeta look off character which is weird since they get more screen time than anyone else.

people who hate it dont watch it.

it's great. GT doesn't even compare to this.

I would recommend watching the Beerus saga, skip the movie, watch the Freeza movie and skip the freiza saga.

it's good. watch it.

Wayyyyyyy better than the garbage that is GT.....the only thing good about GT was it's opening. As for Super, it's not up to the highs as DB or Z but it's still enjoyable to watch as a DB fan. The arcs aren't as long as DBZ and the pace seems quicker but there are some pretty hype moments that happen here and there. Only 3 downsides is that it's animated by Toei which means some episodes look pretty bad and some looks really good. The 2nd is that a lot of DBZ characters don't really do much in Super since it's mostly Goku/Vegeta with Beerus/Whis doing stuff.....also RIP if you a Gohan fan lol. 3rd is that the power levels are all outta wack....it's like they don't even know what is what anymore.

If anything or to cut time short, watch the Battle of the Gods/Resurrection 'F' movies and skip to the Universe 6 vs Universe 7 Tournament Arc which starts on Episode 28. The anime goes through the movies and there are some pretty big differences between them just to let you know but again if you want to cut time short, just watch the movies. Also surprisingly, Super has a lot of pretty good/funny filler episodes to be honest....had a lot more fun with them than DBZ fillers.

You can tell who've watched the first 5 or so episodes to those who've watched it all by a lot of the replies in here. Watch it and judge on your own, just know that the beginning is pretty rough and it just gets better along the way.

Shonen escalation is a hard trap to escape.

Anyway, that's pretty much why we don't see anyone other than Goku and Vegeta playing a main role. The others would get smushed really quickly. But at least they got some screentime fighting Frieza's horde of mooks.

(I know that's from the movie, but it happened in the show too.)
