Is it possible that Titanfall will tank/underwhelm sales wise?

a few? lack of singleplayer at 60 bucks will hurt sales, maybe if they do a good demo or beta

If I recall, Respawn has said that they will be releasing singleplayer content as DLC down the road. As the game stands though, despite my aversion to most multiplayer-only shooters, I'm really looking forward to Titanfall.

No single player might turn off a lot of people.

A lot of people don't even realize that it has no single player (mainly due to how they presented it and not being clear about it). I won't be surprised when people buy it day 1 and find out that they can only play online. The salt will be flowing.

I'm 100% sure its gonna be the new COD in terms of sales. That is unless EA screws it up with their free2play features on a retail game practices. You can't have your cake and eat it too EA. People put up with free2play bs because the game is free. That crap doesn't fly on a retail game.

People sure like to be cynical about TitanFall, but so far it's shown very well and the demo plays really nicely. Loved what I got my hands on at PAX.

Like Call of Duty 4, it could hit that sweet spot of mass appeal and uniformly excellent. Fingers crossed, I guess.

The "manufactured hype" argument is so overblown/off-base it's really getting tiring at this point.

Tell me about it. It's always amusing seeing people act like there is some big gaming media conspiracy to prop up this game. Can't be that they played it and really liked it. Nah! Can't be it. Also lets all ignore all the non media people who played and had fun with it as well. Their impressions mean nothing, clearly.

I've got you down for a "no."

Thanks

Next . . .

lol, whatever you say.

Even if its literally dog poop it will sell really well because the media is hyping it up like crazy and we all know how big Microsoft's and EA's marketing budget is (now combine those budgets together)

The big problem is branding. If people don't know what Titanfall is, they're much less likely to buy it. CoD sells so well because it is a very well-established franchise. If the first game is commercially succesful, I can see the franchise really taking off, though.

Still, as we'll get closer to launch, EAs marketing muscle should have no trouble creating enough buzz. Tbh, the final game would have to be a lot worse game than what has been shown so far in order for the game to tank. The only other thing I see impacting sales is the game's timed exclusivity. Titanfall is never going to be EA's CoD if it isn't released on all platforms at the same time.

After playing it at PAX and hearing the buzz all around the show floor, I'm pretty certain it's going to be huge. Even the guy at the security checkpoint in the airport was talking with me about it, and I was scared I was going to get flagged because he was telling me about throwing grenades in Titan cockpits.

The initial reveal didn't have me super excited about the game, but now it's all that I want to play.

It looks great. I think it will easily do Gears-type numbers on 360. I am really curious to see if the PC community picks it up and how many Xbox Ones it will move.

No dedicated campaign will hurt sales much more than people realize.

You realize MILLIONS of COD players never touch multiplayer right? (Many also never touch single player).

It will do fine. I really don't see it moving Xbox One's off shelves, though and NPD combines all versions so there won't be a way to tell the difference sales wise unless EA breaks it down for us. People are perfectly happy with playing a product on a current-gen console if it means they don't have to blow $500. So long as they play the same and are just as smooth, the lion's share will be sold on 360.

Don't expect it to sell more than Call of Duty or Battlefield though. Maybe Titanfall 2 or whatever...

I don't see why so many people post about the 360 version.

1) It's not being done by respawn, it could very well suck. It is the source engine after all, I highly doubt they'll hit 60FPS when Valve didn't for Orange Box/Portal 2

2) I highly doubt it comes out at the same time as xbox one and PC.

Will Destiny triumph over Titanfall in terms of mainstream recognition and/or sales?

Of course it will, Destiny will be on PS4 and xbone and therefore sell more copies.

I'm going with a PS4 and so are all my friends and family. We can't buy Titanfall because of the Devs deciding not go multiplatform. Definitely a mistake, because they went with current gen assumptions of 360 shooter superiority. IMO, and based on all the preorder indications PS4 will outsell the xbone, and these guys are leaving a bunch $ on the table.

The way the press is hyping it--no way. They don't even have to market it since the press is doing it for free.

I bet a bunch of people will buy it without realizing that it's mp only.

It won't be dog poop though.

Respawn knows what they are doing, Modern Warfare 1 was freaking amazing on all fronts when it came out. I have faith in them.

Not to mention everyone who has played the game has loved it.

The hype around Titanfall is real, no reason to think its "money hats" or "corrupt media".

The game will likely be very good. People just need to deal with it.

It brings the effective x360 install base down from 76 million to around 35 million who have connected online. I know the numbers aren't exact but it's something to consider.

Not really. The money comes from the long tail on COD games, which is maps.

Wasn't there a study around the time BLOPS2 came out that said less than 20% of players had finished the first BLOPS campaign?

It'll definitely be big sales wise even if it turns out to be an undewhelming game later on (doesn't look like it though). Probably gonna come in 3rd place when it comes to shooters after COD and BF.
The hype surrounding it is just too big and so far everyone is praising it's gameplay. Don't see how it couldn't end up being a success even if it's only on three platforms.

Yes.

This has been another edition of Simple Answers to Complex Questions®.

In all seriousness, it's hard to see how it won't with all the money poured into it. That may not mean profits are as high as they might want, but it will probably still sell a few millions.

I just think the Xbone version will massively underperform compared to what EA expected before all the machine was revealed and the PR catastrophe/preorders being surprisingly much in Sonys favour.

I think EA expected X1 version to be huuuuuuuuuuuuge but I think 360 version will surprise compared to how much MS wants to pretend it doesn't exist.

I mean it WILL sell really well to the X1 crowd obviously but I think that crowd will be much smaller than they anticipated (or anyone anticipated) before MS showed their cards to the public.

Depending what kind of deal MS and EA have EA might not even care.

If the 360 version sucks and the xbone does poorly due to its high price, then I guess maybe it could under perform. But I think it's pretty unlikely. Game looks really good, I can see a lot of people picking up the new xbox for it.

Yeah it's a shame a promising 3rd party title got bought up like this, but to be as big as cod you have to be on all platforms. So I can't see this exclusivity deal with Microsoft will last very long, and if Microsoft want to keep on to it longer its going to cost them way more considering the sales they will loose not selling to ps4 ... Of which is having most preorders , Europe etc. pretty bad way to let destiny take all the market share. I actually think its a really bad idea for a new IP lol

The "manufactured hype" argument is so overblown/off-base it's really getting tiring at this point.

The hype is absolutely manufactured. There's zero doubt. It's practically part of Microsoft's entire marketing pitch from the get go. The media press run around like circus monkeys and squack at the latest thing, they're practically paid performers at this point. I can't tell you the number of times games got glowing previews and ended up being fucking awful.

Now, please read my entire statement because it's important you understand the nuance of my argument:

But just because hype is manufactured doesn't mean the game isn't good or doesn't deserve hype. It just means it was obviously planned to be this way in a very deliberate fashion, engineered to push just the right buttons so we have this fervor.

My point is that people are pretty sure about this doing spectacularly, and realistically, it's still going to have to come out on the market on a system that may or may not be performing well at the time, and it's going to have to speak to a wider audience and demonstrate that hype is warranted. And my comment is about why people seem so sure this is guaranteed. I wouldn't say this about any new IP, it's always a gamble.

I have zero interest in it, but I firmly believe the amount of advertising money that gets put behind this game will make it a big seller. Don't know if this first iteration will be profitable, but it will definitely sell a lot.
