Is it possible the PS2 is the worst PlayStation console?

When I think about it most of my favourite Vita games are from the PS2, Persona 4, MGS HD and FFX HD. If only I could play Silent Hill 2 on it.

I'm enjoying my PS4 as much as I enjoyed my PS1 when I got it all those years ago, which is encouraging as we come into 2016.

PS2 still reigns surpreme atm tho - soooo many hours lost to GT, Mercenaries and Rex, among many others. Amazing console.

PS3 am cry a little bit, but that's not to say it's a bad console...

I heard the PSX had a pretty dreadful fail rate, so I'd say that one.

Also, you're smoked, dude. You should probably play some new PS2 games instead of relying on replay nostalgia.

The PS2 was a surprisingly unbalanced hardware design and most games looked and played better (analog triggers for racing games, load times, hdd saves, online mp!) on GameCube and Xbox. Even dreamcast ports looked worse on PS2. So if you remove every multiplatform game with a superior port from the PS2 you get a very j-centric unique library and especially the Xbox does not compare bad at all (with those multiplatform titles).

PS2 also served as a popular entry base into video games.
Dreamcast and Gamecube were rather for more experienced players that knew their games. PS2 reset their audience with new franchises and also quality sequels of existing franchises. It just took few years.
I remember I had a Dreamcast and I learned that my friend got a PS2 in late-2003. He was not a JRPG fan at all, neither was I. Till then he was into PC gaming and FPS and sports titles. He had very few clues about console gaming. For months his main games were The Matrix and Minority Report. While I had games like Jet Set Radio, Soulcalibur, Sega Rally etc. So my opinion on PS2 was rather bad. It looked ugly and its games were ugly. Even in 2004 I was bringing the Dreamcast and we played Jet Set Radio , a game the PS2 did not have. GFX quality in the first years was bad and unoptimised. It took some months till he began discovering games himself and buying PS2 classics and exclusives. PS2 graphics began to get better and optimized after 2004

In the West it did not turn popular due to JRPGs but mainly thanks to multiplatform, FPS and sports titles

It is the only console that started bad and reached the top, mainly thanks to the games. Because it was one of the ugliest consoles I had seen.

The hell? PS2 was a phenomenal console that gave us the templates for many games we are playing today. Many of the ideas were trialled on PS One, but only with PS2 they really got the formula nailed down:

- Brought video to consoles with DVD
- Kicked off with phenomenal graphics and gameplay, as in TTT, SSX, RRV
- Introduced us the modern cinematic MGS formula with MGS2&3
- Introduced all time horror masterpiece with SH2 and Siren
- Introduced the modern epic GTA formula with GTA3 & VC & SA
- Introduced us to the modern epic FF style with FFX
- Introduced Ico and SotC to the world
- Nailed the modern GT and Prologue formula
- Introduced gesture gaming with Eyetoy
- Took games online with Twisted Metal

I'm sure there are countless more examples, this is just from top of my mind.

GTA was not a PS2 exclusive. For a lot of games Xbox, Gamecube and PC ports were much better

nah my PS2 still has more games to play and both my PS3 and PS4 combined, I wasn't really into gaming when the Ps1 was out, only had had a couple of games

and about 80% of my PS2 library is nothing but JRPGs(my favorite genre) so I don't think it will ever be beat

PS2>PSV>PS4>PS3>PSP
You love JRPG and PSP is last? PSP arguably had the best JRPG of any PlayStation system if not any system ever.

Is it possible that the OP is the worst ever gaming OP to be on GAF? Most likely. I know opinions and all that but I just really don't see how one could come to this conclusion when the PS2 has probably the best library in all of gaming.

Going to have to nitpick this. My love for OG XBOX and where it got its foot in the door in the west is because PS2 didn't really do shooters that well at all, whereas XBOX not only had Halo but pretty decent and faithful PC ports, like Wolfenstein when PS2 only got butchered version. Looking back I think PS2 is great but at the time when I was in a heavy shooter mode PS2 was a dust collector.

That's why last gen MS had all the deals and rights for things like COD because the perception at the time and for quite a lot of even the PS3's lifespan even though it did them fine was that PlayStation sucked for FPS.

To me that's probably a purely subjective thing, I actually agree with the initial statement but only because I was never deep into the PS2's library, I've only played the big names on my brothers PS2 back in the day and while there were some things I remember with a smile, most of what I've seen I wouldnt want return to at all.
I've heard the PS2 was way better for Jrpg fans than the PS1 but that's not really my kind of genre so it did nothing for me in that regard.

If you can can come up with a reason that is not subjective to your own experience with said machines and games then it can only be the historical context, the first Playstation being the first and successful entry of a new console competitor and bringing many new and unique games with it, that is was the first real 3d console generation was helping too.

Outside of that context it doesn't really mean much I think. While the big names of games on that system are still fonfly remembered by older gamers, they lost a lot of their impact due to time and younger people don't really care about them any longer. For example, if there ever was a new Colony Wars game announced, it would have all my attention. But most people on this board wouldn't really care at this point... I believe.

The PS1 and PS2 are deadlocked for first. Too much good on both systems. I'd put the PS3's library up against the PS4, but when it's all said and done I think the PS4 could become better than the PS3. They are all excellent consoles though

PS3 and PS4 are the worse, they're not even in the same league as the PS1 and PS2. PS4 is still relatively new so it has time to redeem itself, plus it has quite a few decent games coming out for it.

PS2 had the most diverse library out of them all, it was similar to the PS1 but just better.

Well..the only reason I can see this being a thread is if you didn't have a PS2 at the time. It was, by far, the best console at the time, and it is easily the best PlayStation console. It's...not even a question. That console housed MGS2 AND MGS3. That is enough.

Nope. Not by any objective business criteria. You can have your own opinion in terms of preference but by any sane criteria PS2 is a resounding success and far from being the worst PlayStation console.

The wide range of content on PS2 is staggering. It literally has every type of game from AAA to weird low budget obscure titles. Adding the PS1 backward compatibility also builds on that.

I think although the PS2 was a great console. Aside from some JRPGS, many of the great PS2 games are now PS3 HD remasters which I actually prefer to play.

Although this might be seen as cheating slightly, I feel this makes the PS2 hardware less important as a day-to-day games machine as the PS1 or PS3.

Although I have a PS3 that is hacked and have many PS2 and PS1 Iso files on, so maybe my view is based from a different perspective.

I don't really think there's a best/worst Playstation console, but the PS2 is admittedly the one I have the least amount of love for. Its biggest problem for me was that the OG Xbox existed and that was where I spent the majority of my time that generation. Between ballsy shit like Steel Battalion, online games where I built lasting memories, (Mechassault, Crimson Skies, Wolfenstein, Moto GP, Halo 2, and the list goes on and on...) and running/competing in Halo 1/2 tourneys I adored that system. Every weekend my roommate and I would have people over to drink/play. We owned 5 Xboxes/TVs between the two of us and had our attic completely decked out with stuff from EB Games/Gamestop. (standees and the walls completely covered with promo stuff) Such amazing times.

But yeah, the PS2 was fine as was the Gamecube. They're just completely dwarfed in my memory compared to the OG Xbox. Too bad the 360 fizzled out so quickly for me. (dearth of variety)

I fully expect, even appreciate crazy threads and I understand people trying to have unique opinions. But this takes it a bit too far.

This is literally the worst question ever asked in the history of humankind.

I would congratulate you OP if I wasn't so horrified by it's mere existence

The worst thing about the PS2 is not having a clean progressive picture for all its games. You can play an original Xbox game now in progressive mode and the picture holds up well. The PS2 doesn't.

Everything else though, from game variety to game library etc, as street fighter 2 puts it best:

Well actually... Ps2 emulation brought about ways of doing things on actual ps2 hardware like obtaining true 16:9 along with progressive scan for games that did not support it. You had to sometimes patch the ISO's or use a boot disk, or even a combination of the two, but the ps2 was entirely capable of progressive scan for a lot of games. You can also just run the emulator on a good pc and up the internal resolution. A lot of early games were field rendered though.

its a premise i have a hard time believing.

it is probably the the largest, deepest and most diverse library in the history of video games. there were periods where it was absolutely impossible to keep up with the sheer number of playable titles.

god forbid what you think of all the others that were no where near that class.

bizarre thread.

Owned a PSone since launch (still got it), PS2 for 2 months, PS3 for 6yrs (still got it) and PS4 since launch.

OP is correct.

Technically PS2 was the worst.

It had a lot of ugly games for its time.

That was what I first thought OP was referring to...

But to criticize the sole reason it had any success (besides the name obviously) is nuts.

I mean just think about it:

It was technically inferior to it's competition.
It was expensive as shit

And yet it easily outsold both rivals.

I'd say that PS4 is already starting to surpass PS3's library. PS4 has superior remasters of most of PS3's best games like The Last of Us, the Uncharted trilogy, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, God of War 3, and Journey.

PS4 has been getting a lot of cool games like Bloodbourne and Until Dawn, and 2016 looks crazy with The Last Guardian, Horizon, Uncharted 4, Street Fighter V, and many others.

Sorry to disappoint but I did have a PS2 and looking back there aren't as many games I treasure as other PSconsoles. I'm also not comparing it to other consoles of its time Im comparing it to other Playstations. You say it's not a question but there are other people in here that prefer the PS1. Having a giant library doesn't mean it's the best for everyone. I'm also not calling it bad I'm saying that among the other PS consoles it's the worst for me even though the ps4 could take that spot.

My rankings are

PS1>PS3>PS2>PS4 (Not fair yet, but just putting up there)

I actually think PS4 will surpass PS2.

Again, the PS2 is an amazing console, but it didn't connect with me as much as it did with others. Not to mention I wasn't playing as much during that time.

PS2 was 3rd that gen, in my opinion, behind OG Xbox and GameCube. Xbox for online play, and GameCube for that controller and exclusives I preferred to PS2.

Let's see

I'm more bullish on the PSP's RPG library than most people (Ys! TITS! Wild Arms XF! Half Minute Hero!) but how do you figure? Especially compared to the PS2 and the godly PS1.

The sheer amount quality and diversity of the PSP JRPG library is staggering. Also Fat bottomed girl, Jean D'arc, BBS, FFT, etc.... I just like the PSP library better. The JRPG support for the PSP is larger, as far as I know, than either PS1 and PS2.
