Is it possible the PS2 is the worst PlayStation console?

GTA was not a PS2 exclusive. For a lot of games Xbox, Gamecube and PC ports were much better

Well, you're technically right that there was the GTA Double Pack on Xbox, which was technically superior, and really crushed the PS2 version with the triggers which worked just phenomenally.

However, it came so late that only the few latecomers who missed the games years earlier on PS2 (like, me) played it. So, it was a PS2 franchise for most people.

Can't remember if SA ever made it to Xbox. Not at least at launch I don't think.

The reason I think the PS2 may be the worst PS console is that while there was a ton of different games, there aren't many I actually care to play again. I find the libraries of games I treasure larger on both the PS1 and PS3.

Well, it's possible that it's the worst FOR YOU, but not on a objective level.
To me, the worst playstation console is the ps vita. But I cannot reaaally say which home console is the worst since (as far as game libraries go) the ps1 was great, the ps2 was great and the ps3 was great too.

After SEGA announced that it was pulling the plug on the Dreamcast in January of 2001, I angrily took my entire DC setup (hardware/accessories/games), put it all in bags, and drove it to my local video game store to trade it in towards a new PlayStation 2.

It turned out to be the best move for me. Since then, PS2 has been the most consistently used console in my library. Lots and lots of great games exist for it, and its backwards compatibility with most original PlayStation games made it even more valuable-- although I did (re-)buy an original PlayStation this year for the 20th anniversary.

The PS2 is at the top of my ranking list for Sony consoles, and sits at #2 in my ranking of favorite consoles of all time (behind the NES). Thanks to the inexpensive nature of the used games market for PS2, my library of games for the platform has jumped past 770 titles this year... and it's still growing.

So I keep coming back to this thread and reading a couple posts on the last page. Has anyone actually agreed with the OP? Cuz I haven't seen any.

I've seen people agree with the OP, yes.

Honestly, this isn't a matter of objectivity :v SNES and PS2 don't HAVE to be the best platforms for everyone, DS and PSP don't have to be the best handhelds.

Yes and your opinion is your own as well. Why do people bother stating things that don't need stating and then claiming they have no opinion themselves? There is not a single objective measure I can could use to gauge how great a console is aside from game count and if that's the case IOS or android are the best gaming platforms ever. So everyone saying PS2 is by far the best are merely stating their opinion. Now it seems most share the opinion but that doesn't make the preference the "correct" one. The minority view is just as valid as we discuss preferences. There is no right or wrong.

I purposefully left out handhelds cause I don't have them and I don't look at them the same way as the numbered home consoles.

Going to have to nitpick this. My love for OG XBOX and where it got its foot in the door in the west is because PS2 didn't really do shooters that well at all, whereas XBOX not only had Halo but pretty decent and faithful PC ports, like Wolfenstein when PS2 only got butchered version. Looking back I think PS2 is great but at the time when I was in a heavy shooter mode PS2 was a dust collector.

That's why last gen MS had all the deals and rights for things like COD because the perception at the time and for quite a lot of even the PS3's lifespan even though it did them fine was that PlayStation sucked for FPS.

Despite the superiority of the Xbox and the Windows version for a lot of games, all you'd hear about was the PS2 version:
COD, Max Payne, GTA, FIFA, Pro Evolution, Medal of Honour, Hitman, Bully, Manhunt etc
Granted, the PS2 had some unique exclusive shooters like Killzone, Cold Winter, Black etc that used the hardware to the limits. Games like Ghost Hunter had also nice graphics.
Though this trend was justified since stability and gamepad support were not at their best on computers. Xbox was not as popular
PS2 not only dominated the industry. It also made dual shock controllers more popular than ever.

Well actually... Ps2 emulation brought about ways of doing things on actual ps2 hardware like obtaining true 16:9 along with progressive scan for games that did not support it. You had to sometimes patch the ISO's or use a boot disk, or even a combination of the two, but the ps2 was entirely capable of progressive scan for a lot of games. You can also just run the emulator on a good pc and up the internal resolution. A lot of early games were field rendered though.

I remember in the early days of PCSX2 when emulator could run mostly Japanese games since they were easier to emulate, the forums and the developers were branded as anime weeaboos
This disappeared later when western games began to get emulated too.

In ten years if we discover the PS2 gave us all cancer, then yes, it would be the worst Playstation console. Barring that, it's pretty unlikely.

It's possible.

It's also probable that it's the best.

Best genre variety, had enough power to do 3D gameplay right, and 3D game design was finally fully established and properly playable. We got new awesome franchises all the time. It brought DVDs to the masses. It was relatively cheap.

So, it's possible, I guess.

A lot of what you said applies to other consoles, and I still don't get why people keep saying genre variety. it had no more genre variety than later consoles, just the genres switched.

Example, the PS2 had many Action Adventure games, arguably the largest genre, and had a decent amount of shooters, while the 360 had this in reverse.

Also it brought DVD's to the masses is a heavy hyperbole piece implying DVD would not have taken off as it did without the PS2, even though DVD was already rapidly popular before the PS2, and that DVD players were already in a bundance during the PS2's first few years.

I think people look at PS3 and Blu-ray and apply that ot the past for revision.

I remember every weekends me and some pals used to go to my friend's country residence in the countryside, leaving the big city. Amazing time.

Playstation 2, movies, TV series, soccer, basketball, I'd take the dog for a walk outside etc
We preferred to have an actual DVD player for movies since the PS2 was so slow in fast-forwarding and would not display some DVDs correctly on a 20 year old CRT television set.. But sometimes the PS2 came in handy. Still you could get a DVD player for 70 Euro back then very cheap.
