is Itagaki hinting he has no information on a new HD Nintendo system?

More mysteriously, Itagaki said that the game could be released on platforms in addition to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. "We're developing it so that it can be brought to as yet unknown hardware as well. Specifically, the various areas of technology are scalable."

Impress asked if this means Nintendo 3DS and a next generation PSP are included in Itagaki's sights. Responded Itagaki, "More than that, although I can't say this easily because I don't have any information, it's possible that Nintendo could release a higher end console. Something like that."

ummmm

Could be, or he could just mean that the games so far from completion that Nintendo could toss out something new by then.

Anythings possible

All he's saying is that the technology in his upcoming game scales well, and if Nintendo did release an HD console it could probably run on that too.

How is he hinting if he openly admits he has no information?

Edit: Beaten.

well he said that he wants to release his game on other consoles that's not out in the market yet, and it's not a portable!

He said it "could be", in the sense that he's covering his bases by having scalable technology.

'our game is scalable in case Nintendo releases a more powerful console, or it could work on PC.'

There you go. Drama averted.

It's at least interesting to see how little developers know about Nintendo's next home console.

Truly kept behind closed doors.

I don't think Nintendo even care . Only way a 3rd party dev would have a clue would be if Itagaki had a friend or insider working at EAD.

Nintendo would obviously want 3rd parties to begin working on titles for the launch of the console as soon as possible. You'd expect dev kits to have already been handed out if they were preparing for a release within the next 6-8 months. Seeing as he's openly confessing how little he knows on the matter here, this could be very telling of how far away we are from seeing the successor to the Wii.

Either that, or he's under the strictest of NDAs and he bluffed through that question effectively.

you would think that but in the past nintendo has been known to surprise developers at the last minute with new hardware.

imo nintendo needs to hold off on a new system until the others are ready to be announced as well. the system specs and online needs to be on par with the others so that developers can port easily. i dont think the next evolution of motion control is going to sell the system or have developers/hardcore gamers interested.

the upcoming 3DS event is going to be very telling on nintendos willingness to improve. if the words "friend codes" is mentioned i think it's safe to say nintendos next system will also be a generation behind the competition.

Devil's Third is a long way from being done. It's currently planned for release in March 2013. That's a goddamn eternity.

If that's the case, anything could happen with any of the console makers between now and the game's release. It makes sense to be prepared for anything if you're trying to be multiplatform and planning that far into the future.
