Is Monster Games working on a new racing game?

I'd love to see their Excite games on virtual console. The 2 Wii games and Excite World Rally ported to Wii U eshop.

I'd love for it to be Diddy Kong Racing 2 but I'm pretty sure I remember Liam saying on Twitter that never existed recently, unless he was just kidding around.

I don't really see why it's so inconceivable that a first-party NX game would use a middleware engine. Times have changed.

An engine that could be scaled between their next home console, handheld and mobile and used by all their teams....certainly seems to be what they want going forward. Maybe Unity is going to be that engine. Nintendo were certainly keen to get Unity on Wii U and New 3DS.

Here's what Shocking Alberto (this is his twitter right?) said in September 2015.

Oh yeah I remember that. Same logic went into that Wii Crush conversion of Project Hammer. I HIGHLY doubt that sort of thing would happen now. The fact they didn't make a new Wii-series on Wii U proves that phase is done, hell I'd even think they're done period since I don't think Wii Fit U, Wii Sports Club, nor Wii Party U did well at all.

Hmm...this combined with Unity and everybody always saying that they're too small to make a game makes me think mobile.

I dunno...Wii U was pretty half-assed. It didn't seem to have much of anything.

A Mii Kart Racer is kinda dumb, though.

I would love another ExciteBots, although that is not gonna happen.

It was the best racing game of last generation, after all.
Well, what other racing games let you throw pies at clowns, score a touchdown, and then cast a fishing rod, all during the final lap?

I highly doubt it's Excite, as Excitebots tanked at retail. I'd bet it's Wave Race or F-Zero.

A Mii racer would be the absolute worst-case scenario here.

It could be an eShop title. World Rally did well I think.

Also, the career and championship mode line is apparently gone now. So...

Excite bike Wii ware was amazing, why can't we get more of that

With al the respect in the world for Monster games, both Wave Race and FZero are a go big or go home games and are just going to be under too much scrunity for them to handle appropriately.

They're a really small team. I can't imagine this being a huge project, unless they've greatly expanded or are co-developing with another studio, like Retro.

They better be. They are such a waste for random Nintendo ports...

Their team size really hasn't super workable for large-scale projects. I'm not surprised at all that they became more of a support studio once Nintendo finally went HD.

Given the kind of experience they do have a result of those ports, though, I think it bodes well for them that they're better equipped to embark on something a bit more ambitious than they've done in the past. They may not have actually made DKCR or Xenoblade, but knowing how they work is a valuable asset for them, and it sounded like the bonus world they developed for DKCR3D was pretty well received.

Like I said in a previous thread, I feel Monster is handling the coding/programming of the game, while retro is lending out with track design and the art. This is what I assume Miyamoto meant when he said Retro was big enough for multiple projects; working on a major title and assisting on another.

I do believe Excitebike or ExciteTruck would make most sense given a "championship or career mode". Even then, I would suspect some other entity is helping them develop it.

I can definitely see it being co-developed by Retro since they have worked together with them in the past. The idea of Retro co-developing a racer may get some heat but Miyamoto did state that Retro is big enough to work on two projects at the same time.

Agreed:

- Unity's a poor choice for a F-Zero game due to the speed
- I don't think Wave Race would run well on Unity either
- Diddy Kong Racing wouldn't have a career mode, plus it's too close to Mario Kart.

I'm reading their website...I can't believe somebody actually has a worse website than what Retro Studios used to have. lol

Anyways looking at their past games it was a port and I think somewhere it said they did Xenoblade Chronicles 3D? Looks like they haven't done a console game (by themselves new game) since ExciteBots.

Makes me think they couldn't work on a F-Zero or Diddy Kong Racing 2. It's probably an Excite game for NX then.

I should add Retro Studios might be helping them (they worked on MK7) so it could be a bigger game.

Edit: Lets put the evidence together! Retro Studios worked on a racing game in Mario Kart 7. Retro Studios worked on DKCR and DKCTF. Monster games works on Excite series which are racing games. Monster games helped work on DKTF.

Retro and Monster games likes to work together and they each are rumored to be working on Diddy Kong Racing 2. The evidence shows they both have some expertise in "racing" and "DK" now. Retro + Monster Games = DK + Racing = Diddy Kong Racing 2 :D

They co-developed Mario Kart 7 and that turned out pretty well.

Assuming it's not Retro, I wonder who would be helping them out. The developer scene in Minnesota is a bit limited these days, and I can't immediately think of any other developer Nintendo has worked with in the past that they can call upon to help them.

It really could be anyone. I know the Nintendo thought bubble is small "OMG it has to be Platinum or Retro", but it really could be anyone. Every generation we've seen Nintendo contract different western and Japanese studios for work. Anyway, anyone following my posts might notice how excited (no pun intended) I was pondering if Nintendo would go back to tradition and release a Nintendo IP racer at NX launch. Excite would definitely be a great accompanying launch title. The year of Nintendo dreams my friends.

They could try to make DKR more "tricked out" with those terms meaning:

Career Mode = Adventure Mode
Championship Mode = Trophy Race

You never know.

It'd be cool if they made Diddy sort of that hardcore sport racer to differentiate him from Mario Kart which is more, well, Mario. :P

ARE YOU CHIMP ENOUGH?! RACE TO BE THE BEST, OR BE SECOND BANANA!!!

The Diddy Kong Racing 2 rumors made sense before Mario Kart 8 was conceived. Now that Mario Kart 9 will likely expand on the DLC/Amiibo all-star concept - there really isn't any place for Diddy Kong Racing 2 to exist. I mean, you remember it was basically supposed to be Diddy and a bunch of Kensuke Tanabe's mascots from a bunch of low selling games. So if the rumor was ever true, (i think it was a small prototype at best that turned into ExciteBots), it wouldn't make sense in 2017.

I never believed the rumor anyway because there is no way Nintendo was going to release Donky Kong Barrel Blast and then Diddy Kong Racing 2 on the Wii. People forget about the former.

Diddy Kong Racing NX hype starts now

Yes yes yes yes yes yes. Did anyone link to the OG rumors??

Career and Championship Modes don't sound very Diddy Kong Racing-esque.

More like Excite-something or F-Zero.

Assuming this is a game for Nintendo.

Ohh. True. Hype...deflating. That was a fun thirty seconds though, haha. I still believe we'll see DKR2 one day. And perhaps career is shorthand for adventure mode here. Perhaps....

My only thing is what if Nintendo wants their smaller characters represented in a racing game? Think of characters like Dillion or Malo from Pushmo. I don't see them ever getting Amiibo to be in a Mario Kart game nor do I want them there.

I like the idea of a DKR2. It has different modes and racing style from Mario Kart and it can be used to represent the smaller characters Nintendo has.

People would be PISSED

I see what you mean. Still, as Dark Cloud indicated above me, what DKR offers that Mario doesn't is the main Adventure Mode for SP. Until MK gets something similar, I'll continue clamoring for a new DKR. And if they could use the MK8 engine to make it, it could be put together more easily, no? And as Dark Cloud said, these are characters being bandied about who aren't as likely to get amiibo to begin with, plus the fact that MK only ended up getting tracks and amiibo for two non-Mario IP, though perhaps MK9 will go much further in that direction.

As the original rumor monger indicated, it's still noteworthy that Diddy wasn't in MK8.I realize I'm grasping at straws perhaps, but until I have more than that to grasp at, I'll keep hoping DKR2 or at least something like it does materialize. ☺
