Is Overwatch going to be popular on consoles?

They are also pretty much releasing the full game for the Beta are they not? If nothing else that says volumes about their confidence in what they have made. My short time playing was enough to get me to preorder on PS4... probably going to double dip on my PC as well.

Yep, we've been playing the entire thing since the beta started (obviously they've added more over time, at a pace I consider good all things considered), and everyone I know that's spent more than 5 minutes with it has already preordered it. Literally nothing new coming that isn't in it (or at the time of launch isn't in it anyway) and it's still an impossible game to stop playing.

I wont be buying it unless the price drops significantly, just can't justify the 60 dollar purchase with f2p games like Gigantic and Paladins on the horizon.

god I hope it will be. I really tried playing FPS with m+k but I just can't do it. I've no idea why.

But I know playing with a controller on PC I'll lose, so my only hope is my ps4 >>

They are literally not remotely the same types of games.

That's like saying you might as well not buy anything ever becuase Candy Crush Saga exists.

Depends on how long keep support for those versions and how good it plays with a controller

Those two are the things that killed CSGO and TF2 on console, but CS on console was always a bad idea anyway

What's the pricing structure for this game? $60 or free to play with heros you can purchase? Somewhere in between?

The game certainly has my attention and I'd likely buy it if the price was right. Either way I think the console community has potential to go either way. It's not like Blizzard is completely unknown on consoles, the Diablo 3 console release is great and did quite well I think.

If you enjoy being limited to a small roster of heroes unless you grind for hundreds of hours or throw down real cash, then yes it doesn't make sense to get Overwatch when you can play Gigantic and Paladins.

I personally don't like that experience and I'd rather pay up front to have access to all heroes and maps.

The short answer is yes, I think.

My two best friends and I are jumping in to fill the particular Timesplitters itch we've been chasing across similar games, and Overwatch has it in spades. All three of us are snagging it for PS4.

The game oozes charisma, and seems like the kind of thing that presents itself well to non-players (via Twitch or YouTube or even the casual observer) and given it has more emphasis on each player adding to the team rather than on MLG kdr battles, I feel like people won't be daunted by jumping in.

Also - correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe it has an offline mode, too? With bots? Seems like a great game to load up with a friend and just mess around with, which is a staple of console shooters of yesteryear (Halo, Golden aye, Timesplitters, etc)

This thread reminded me I haven't played the beta in 2 days.

Gotta fix that. It's been a while since I really got into a multiplayer game like this, and I honestly feel like the quality of the game and the backing of Blizzard will undoubtedly lead it to success. It's a super-tight game.

I think it will be fine on all platforms, and if the consoles can get cross-play with each other, it'll be really good.

I thought this was going to be a free to play game, where you can buy other characters but get to play as a different one every week for free. If that's not the case then I'm personally not that interested/ not yet convinced. From what I've seen of the game so far it seems like a team fortress 2 clone.

I don't think so. But I'm sure it won't be too bad to find matches on console a few weeks after launch hype.

It's like TF2 if TF2 had more characters, had kept evolving and had better gameplay. So yeah it's exactly like TF2.

TF2 is old now, this is the next logical step for that type of game and we know Valve aren't going to release anything soon.

If it's fun, interesting, and feels good to play, it can be successful even if it's just multiplayer.

If they can capture the magic of action combat in vanilla WoW pvp, it will be a hit.

There's only one Hero Shooter coming out this year and that's battleborn.

Paragon is a MOBA.
Paladins is in beta and it doesn't look to have a full release anytime soon.
Gigantic is a MOBA, still in beta.
LawBreakers? Early 2017.

Overwatch literally has no one competing with it but Battleborn.

I honestly don't think most audiences will take the time to see the difference. The pitch of 'shooter with multiple characters & "eSports" ' is all the mainstream audience is really going to perceive. Standing out is going to be a challenge. Right now, 2016 has Paragon, Battleborn, Paladins, Lawbreakers, Dirty Bomb, Super MNC, Gigantic, and possibly Battlecry competing for that marketshare. Plus established franchises like CoD & Rainbow Six: Siege adding in modes that ape the format.
Even if these games aren't releasing in 2016, you can be sure they'll roll out early access betas and promoted streams.

I'm not saying Overwatch won't win this fight. But there WILL be a fight.

The Blizzard moniker alone is safe enough to declare it the clear favorite in this fight.

About as popular as other shooters with no single player like Rainbow Six.

well, to be honest R6 has quite a healthy community on consoles.

I think it will all come back to Blizzard's support. if they cut content on consoles or just stop releasing updates like they did with Diablo - community will forget the game very quickly.

That being said, I think there's a new generation of (console) gamers not familliar with Blizzard's games.
So they will have to go extra mile to gain their trust. It's all in the hands of Blizzard.
I wish it would do good.

They haven't stopped releasing updates for Diablo though.

I'm excited about it, and will be checking out the beta on consoles. I do wonder about how much content is going to be there though.

I guess the value comes from how many heroes there are, but I wonder how many maps/modes will be there at launch.

Don't understand why people keep saying MP only games won't do well like they aren't the best selling games. Overwatch is going to be perfectly fine.

TF2 has evolved over the years by making some classes much better than they were at launch. I dont see why both games cant co-exist because its obvious the strategies employed in each one are completely different.

Im honestly glad the two games are so different cause if TF2 had mechanics like Medic being able to revive teammates outside of MvM i would be very upset.

It must be running at 60fps and 1080p on PS4 I think, I play it on medium settings 1080p and 70fps on my laptop when not at my desk, it seems to scale pretty well.

It does scale pretty well. When I played the open beta I could play it on the 2nd highest settings 60 fps no problem, and my cpu is 6 years old and graphics card 4 years old.

I honestly think this is going to be one of Blizzard's flops, at least on consoles. PC it may have a small following.

The streams of the game just looked boring. The game lacks diversity in play type.

Edit - It also should have been free to play like Hearthstone and HotS. Free to Play would make this game huge.

F2P would split the base and kill the game on consoles. PC playerbase will dwarf consoles either way, but they seem pretty serious about making an equal effort with the console ports.

Aye I guess I meant if that sub genre had evolved at all.

You are correct though it's not really all that much like tf2 for me but it's about the only thing it's comparable too.

People seem to forget 8 years ago tf2 cost money to play and wasn't full of micro transactions either.

It will have his niche player base, but it won't explode or be anything close to CoD popularity or anything. I say that because after extensively playing Overwatch and also trying out the game pad control scheme (no, not in a real match, I'm fully aware of the controls discrepancy between mouse and game pad) I feel like this kind of game doesn't translate well with joysticks. Why do I say that? Well console shooters uses lots of subtle tricks and design decision to accommodate the control scheme and make it feel as natural as possible.

Design tricks in most console fps:
  • The base movement speed of players is fairly low.
  • The action is mainly in the horizontal axis (few reasons to shoot up or down, even Blops3 reigned that down following AW which did not have that design).
  • Most console shooters favor hitscan, or if not at least very fast projectiles.
  • Bullet magnetism and aim stickyness makes aiming pretty pain free.
  • Most shooters on consoles feature aim down sight, which is often coupled with a target snapping, making it easier to engage mid/long firefights with having to be super precise with the stick.
  • Turning around with a joystick is often awkward and slow, so map design and sprint lets you disengage instead of fighting back if flanked.

Almost none of those design tricks are present in Overwatch, making it feel like a PC shooter shipped down to consoles. Characters move much faster than your typical console shooter, and some are particularly hard to hit like a good Genji. There's barely a horizontal line for action. You have to look up past your maximum vertical field of view at the default view angle for Mercies/Pharahs, high perched Snipers or people on rooftops while you can't go there (say your Tjorbiorn vs a Junkrat). You also have to 180 turn from time to time, like against dashing/recalling Tracers or Genji dashing through you, which is awkward with sticks. All of the above makes it much more frustrating to be efficient at both aiming and looking around.

Regarding aim assist mechanics like aim stickiness, it's there but with slow projectiles characters like Lucio or Mercy that mechanic is a trap. You have to actively move out of the stickyness zone if you ever hope to hit someone that is ADADing, else you will never hit them because you have to actively lead and predict, but now you have to fine tune your aiming with a joystick out of the sticky zone. It feels really awkward. The game also lacks ADS which isn't a big problem since very few heroes are designed for mid-range fighting but it does make McCree and S:76 harder to play with at those ranges.

All of those above makes me think that while the game will be a huge success at launch on consoles, the huge population won't stay and people will go back to what they are comfortable, feeling like they have trouble getting kills and playing good in that game without really knowing why. I predict it will have around BF4 level of population past the initial hype, which isn't shabby.
