Is Super Mario 3D World already forgotten?

Not forgotten, but I doubt that 10 years from now we talk as much about it as we did/do about Mario 64, Mario Galaxy or maybe even Mario Sunshine.

The multiplayer is a blast, but aside from that, I don't think it does anything better than previous 3D Mario games. Which doesn't prevent it from being great, of course. It truly is.

Judging by the amount of threads dedicated to it last week, nope. It's still the best 3D platformer this generation so far, but then again it doesn't have much competition.

This game single handedly got me back into Nintendo games. I felt like I was 5 years old again. Definitely not forgotten! I just don't bust it out very often.

I still play it from time to time. I haven't beaten champions road yet, so I've still got plenty of challenge left in the game.

Lately I've just been playing around in various levels, looking for shortcuts and seeing how quickly I can finish them.

My friends and I had a blast with it, but yeah, I don't find it very memorable. Like I couldn't tell you what levels are in which worlds.

Really would like to have another 3D Mario like SM64, where there's a strong sense of place.

I practically no-life'd this game up until the 7th world, but took a break to play some other games I got. Truly reminds me of the platforming glory days.

For a 3D Mario game, it's one of the least memorable to me. It's still an excellent game but I won't be nostalgic of it. It lacks a world theme and is not a coherent adventure, just a succession of disparate levels.
Isn't that kinda what Galaxy 1 and especially 2 are? Like yeah, space, but could you tell me which levels are in what world/dome thing? Sunshine was pretty much the only one that was coherent in that sense.

I got bored of it pretty quickly. I think I got to the world in the clouds before just not picking the game back up again. Didn't enjoy the feel of the game anywhere near as much as Galaxy, despite it being charming and having some nice ideas.

I think ultimately it came down to the controls and the more traditional platform structure (timed racecourse type affair) that just didn't do anything for me.

Galaxy is as good as Mario has ever been, for my money. Better than Bros, Bros 3, World and 64. Although i have no problem accepting that people really got on with 3D World, I'm hoping for a swing back in Galaxy's direction next time.

We get threads about 3D World all the time, so the answer to your question is no.

I know it's hard to follow up to one of the best games ever made: Super Mario Galaxy 2, but 3D World is still a brilliant game regardless. I'd probably put it as my 3rd favourite Mario Game.

Probably not.

It's okay. I really hate the idea of making most of the game piss-easy and adding some annoying collectibles to provide some challenge.

You can tell OP is trying to hard when even Pie and Beans' backup post comes off rather bland in comparison.

Best 3D platformer this side of Alpha Centauri.

..And here comes the 'I've finished the game - I beat Bowser!' brigade.

Nah. Let's see, off the top of my head:

Cat powerup allowing more vertical levels.
Sliding through an ice level inside a boot.
Those train levels.
Oh god the music.
Dem Toad levels.
The postgame that
simply refuses to end
Miiverse messages throughout the world map and after levels
Multiplayer
Those baddie parade levels.
The shadow levels.
The asian level.
Characters that control differently,
including Rosalina
Stacking propeller/cannon block on top of powerup.
The Mario Kart level.
Getting into a Koopa shell.
That level where the flagpole
runs away from you

I'd say it was plenty memorable.

I'd also argue that, for what it's worth, this game has utilized Miiverse better than any other game so far, unless you count the Pic of the Day.

It's as memorable as Galaxy to me, especially levels like Mount Must Dash, The Great Goal Pole, Beep Block Skyway, fucking Champion's Road (which I still haven't beaten)

It was the perfect mix of the things I love about 2D and 3D Mario games.

No I can't but the space theme was enough to make it coherent, after all, there are billions of different planets in our galaxy. The launching ring stars were enough to link all the planetoids together and everything was a strange planet. In SM3DW, the cubes are just there...a shame.

I think that's part of it. But I feel like, at least for me, another part of it is how I play games these days. Or I guess I should say, how good I am at games these days. Back when Mario 64 came out, I was pretty young, and it took me a long time to finish games because I wasn't very good at them, and they were a little more difficult than games these days for the most part anyway.

Like, Mario is a lot harder to control in 64 than in 3D World, so to me it was harder to do things with him, even though he was technically more agile.

So basically, it took me much longer to complete games back in the day, whereas these days, I can breeze through games like it's nothing. I could beat 3D World in a weekend if I had wanted to.

And I didn't have much money, so I would only have a few games, and play them over and over even if I had already finished them.

I feel like all of these things add together to make most games these days far less memorable than they used to be.

That's why I actively try not to buy too many games each year, and why I actively pace myself out (even though I could complete 3D World in a weekend, I deliberately chose not to).

So I got a pretty memorable experience out of it, but it wasn't natural like it used to be.

That and, yes, older Mario games did have a better sense of place.

It's the only 3D Mario I didn't feel like finishing (only finished due to christmas and co-op) and the only 3D Mario I really feel no interest in replaying.

In fact, it was so disappointing it made me question if I still can honestly say that platformers are my favorite genre. Luckily Tropical Freeze came along and made me realize it's was all just 3D World's fault. Sure, the game looks great and the levels are interesting... but controlling the characters just isn't fun and that kind of ruins everything.

I think it will be fondly remembered, but never thought of as iconic due to the lack of a cohesive theme or aesthetic outside of maybe the jazzy soundtrack. It's really just a succession of well designed, arbitrarily themed levels.

In 5 years or so, we'll realize how infinitely more replayable 3D world is than the Galaxies.

I love the Galaxy games, but they had padding and tutorials slow the experience down. 3D is instantly enjoyable and with up to 4 players.

So, in short OP, no. Absolutely not.

I've 100%'ed the game and I'm still playing it (almost put 80 hours into it, so far). I certainly haven't forgotten it.

Disagree. 3D World was great, and my wife and I still play it fairly regularly. I will agree with someone above me that I couldn't tell you which levels were in which worlds, but I think that's more a lack of cohesive world design than it is about the game itself being memorable.

Oh please don't put words into my mouth. I'm not an idiot that doesn't know what happens after the credits. I played through the first world after the main game and it did have some suitably challenging levels. The world after only had some rehashes of older levels so I stopped there. It's been a while so I might be off but that was definitely the cause for quitting the game.

That doesn't change the fact that a very big part of the game consists of going through easy levels and collecting 4 items.

I feel the same way, I'm up to Bowser World 6 and am finding it really hard to get motivated to finish the thing when with previous 3D Marios, I couldn't put them down.

3D World is just so boring and repetitive, especially after the NSMBs and 3DLand. It just feels like more of the same 'flagpoles and timers' stuff.

Nah. It didn't quite have the same impression on me that Galaxy 2 did, but I still play it occasionally and it still pops up in discussion from time to time. I think the game had plenty of memorable stages and much better platforming and control so it has that going for it. It's also one of the only platformers I've played with functioning multiplayer. I still want a Galaxy 3 next though.

There are like 12 world,s and believe me, you stopped right around the point where it gets way, way better.

World 7-12 in 3D world felt like a beautiful return to Galaxy in HD.

Just do it.

Super Mario 3D World's soundtrack > Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack

fite me
I'd agree. I mean both are great, but...
I clicked on the World Bowser YouTube link on the first page. So good.

I'm also surprised to hear so many people mention the timer. I honestly couldn't have told you that there was a timer in this game. Does it ruin the game for a lot of people?

Uh, I'm already past that. The Bowser world is World 8.
