Is Super Mario 3D World already forgotten?

My experience with it....is strange. I had a blast playing with my friend at the time. It's a very pretty/polished game. Enjoyed the hell out of it.

But I also agree in the sense that, once I was done with it, I never really thought about it again.

Yeah. 3D World isn't very memorable except for stuff like:

The awesome cat powerup.
The Super Mario Bros 2 crew back again for the first time since SMB2 with all of their abilities in 3D.
The amazing soundtrack.

Fuck yeah!

Man. So many good memories. So many awesome things. Very diverse. Most of the game is extremely memorable.

That's way more memoryable for me.

*Hopes there aren't many dead links*

I feel like I played a completely different game when people talk about how fun the multiplayer was. In my experience, it was nothing but a way to lose lives really fast. Went in with 50+ lives that I'd collected through single player, and we managed to get a Game Over.

It's actually one of my favorite Mario's. My boyfriend and I go back to it regularly, especially since its co-op.

Not forgotten by a long shot. Very replayable to me.

Limiting "Sunshine" to a somewhat run-of-the-meal tropical Island vacation theme was probably one of the most short sighted thematic/artistic decisions that EAD ever made.

That sounds like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. That game was infinitely harder with two people playing. On first play through's, there are levels that will kill you as you don't have enough time to react (especially with a second person also moving the screen).

I honestly, had no issue dying playing with people on 3D World. But I only played with 2-3 people with 3D World. Maybe it's worse with 4? I can imagine like SOME stages being kind of hectic. But for the most part, I really didn't have any issues doing multiplayer. That is the only way I played the game actually.

It was more ambitious and original than most of whatever 3D World is. 3D World retreads a lot of what 3D Land did, and a lot of gameplay ideas from Galaxy/2.. like the beat timed platforming sections, the lava sections, etc.

I think its selling points are also less compelling than the FLUDD suit that actually had moments of contemplation, where as the Cat Suit was typically reduced to just climbing up a wall or the cherry power, which is mostly pointless, is really only for accessing side missions.

What 3D world does have is the local multiplayer, which I am glad to have said is a huge + and also seems to make a lot of people happy.

Now I realize why Nintendo keeps shoehorning in gimmicks like cats and motion controls into their new games: they're just solid but forgettable otherwise without a gimmick.

If the cat power up is a gimmick then so is the fire flower. If the pointer controls in the Galaxies are gimmicks, then so are the analog sticks in Uncharted.

Considering I just beat it about two weeks ago, no. The game is pretty good though, but not as good as Super Mario Galaxy. I wish I could've tried out the multiplayer in this though. I have to go back and try and beat the post game world.

I kinda forgot about it, and I haven't even finished it yet. Meant to play another World on Saturday, but I've got too many other games on my plate right down that I've been more enthusiastic to play (Xrd, Kingdom Hearts 2.5, DMC Collection, Tropical Freeze, MGS Collection).

I'll defitintely get back to it eventually. Can't think of a Mario game that I left uncompleted. Probably in a month or two.

I just got a Wii U last month and started this last week. Have cleared all the levels except the last three challenge ones (all stamps, gold flags, and stars). I have been absolutely fucking addicted to this game for the last seven days. Fucking love it.

No, Mario games will never be forgotten, there is a thread for this game once in 2 weeks. Games like Darkstalkers, these are sadly forgotten, mostly because the developer doesnt create a new game in that franchise. But to stay ontopic, I feel like a main Mario game will always be remembered.

This and 3d land are the best Mario games since super Mario world. I can not say enough good things about this franchise returning to its former glory after years of 3d platforms masquerading as Mario games.

I love Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS a lot.

But for 3D World it didn't hook me as much and I don't know what it was.

Just picked it up over the weekend. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. After playing GTA and a lot of FPS', it's refreshing to get back to my Wii U and Mario.

Sunshine does have some pretty environments. The problem is that Sunshine only has 8 or 9 levels counting Delfino Plaza and depending on how generous you want to be with Corona Mountain. And all of those levels are tropical. Most of the missions in each area are just terrible, too. 3DWorld has a much wider variety of memorable levels.

Same here. I got passed the 4th world and felt like I was forcing myself to play so I just stopped. My gf not really into it either.

I'm one of the few that love Sunshine, but Jesus Christ was it a frustrating game.
I don't think i've ever raged to a game as bad as i raged with that one (except maybe pre-Black Ninja Gaiden on xbox).

3D World was a much more enjoyable experience, even when i had problems with a level.

Awful physics, awful camera, awful glitches, some of the worst missions to ever grace a Mario title (electric ray beach, pianta throwing bullshit, exploding watermelon rolling, etc). It amazes me that people consider the Galaxy games worse than Sunshine.

The bizarre pedestal that Sunshine has been put on by some since the day of the 3D World announcement reeks of the Zelda Cycle.

Yeah. Even 3DLand destroys it. I did love the FLUDD less levels--a precursor to Galaxy.

But the blue coins, the lack of Shine variety, the horrible sub worlds such as Pianta Village, the Amusement Park and the Hotel, the lack of sub worlds--only seven if I remember, Yoshi being terrible.

Ugh. What a disappointment after 64.

noki bay is a legitimately great stage surrounded by the worst stages in a 3d mario.

I remember it. It was awesome. Best 3D platforming in the entire series imo. I think the Galaxy games have way better spectacle, but I really appreciate the tightly focused gameplay of 3D World. I think purely from a level design and platforming gameplay aspect it may well be the best 3D game in the series.

I'm at world 4 right now and feeling the same, does the game get better later on?

spoilers for when you finish(yes it takes that long to get good)
you get one good post game world, star world. after that it's just a few rehashed harder levels with even stricter time limit.
3d world was very forgettable for me, it felt mostly uninspired... it was ok i guess but never as great as 64/galaxy.

Nah, 3D World was just about as ambitious as Sunshine; I think the only key difference is that EAD Tokyo and it's leads were a lot more thoughtful about their artistic/thematic and interactive decisions.
Also, 3D World isn't a rushed and repetitive "Action-Adventure Lite" experience.
:P

Edit: Also, Sunshine's theme was far from original; in most Mario games it would have been one world in a much bigger game, and it probably would have been a lot more surreal and engaging than the unfitting unnecessarily grounded "Isle Delphino".
In all honesty, Isle Delphino is almost as unfitting to the Super Mario Franchise as Station Square was to the Sonic franchise. "Sunshine" almost feels like what would happen if Super Mario was in the hands of a developer who doesn't understand it's true essence, it's core interactive and thematic identity. Sunshine just feels...off...and not in a cool Majora's Mask kind of way but in a weird "Why did the-why...why would they even do this I just wanted Super Mario 64 2..." kind of way.

I'd rather they (EAD) cut out the extra filler that has been plaguing the 3D games since Sunshine. Game is much better without it.

And the soundtrack is dope as hell.

So is there a way to tell which levels you've finished with all the characters? I tried finishing one with all 5 of them (Just to be safe) and nothing happened to make it pop out. How the hell would you know?

Also, the soundtrack is A-grade.

I can back this up; definitely my favorite soundtrack of the past several months. I actually went to eBay to buy the 2 CD soundtrack for this game. One of the best purchasing decisions I've made. Granted, a few of the tunes are remixes (Champion's Road is a remix of Gusty Garden Galaxy, the Plessie Slide song is a remix of the SM64 slide theme, etc) but even then they quite often surpass the originals.

Quite possibly my overall favorite game on the Wii U at the moment.

Once you reach the final world, you'll be able to see icons for each level telling you who you've finished it with so far. They didn't intend for you to play through the game that way your first time through.

I am in the final world....

Unless you mean the final world is those three levels you can only get to with all the stamps, stars and flagpoles. So I guess that means you don't have to complete this in order to get there which is good... because I still have a bunch of them I have to get before I can ever play Champion's Road.

Well, I literally just started playing it, so no, not forgotten!

Also, I find it very charming and I feel pretty nostalgic playing it, like I've recaptured some part of my gaming joy that I've lost in adulthood.

This has already been thoroughly hammered on throughout this thread, but --

If anything, it's not widely recognized as the absolute masterful lesson in level design that it should be yet!

Yeah once you unlock the world with Champion's Road in it, every level's world map display thing gains a little icon per character alongside the stars and stamp icons to record whether you've beaten that level with that character or not.

Literally the only thing the every-level-with-every-character thing gives you is 5 stamps. I have had the privilege of dying on CR tons of times but am nowhere near getting those 5 stamps (not sarcasm. Champion's Road is amazingly fun to me even while dying dozens of times).
