Is Switch potentially becoming the main console for many now?

Yes it will when I buy it. Not the main platform though, since I do have a PC. But for consoles yup, it's the best (only) choice for me.

The portability is a plus, most interesting line up of exclusives, great to play with friends. Zelda alone wouldn't sell me a console. And my most recent Nintendo home console was N64. I've had Xbox, PS1 and PS3 after that. Except for Ps1, those never got the same amount of playtime that my Nintendo consoles did. I feel it's time to return "home". Also keeping my fingers crossed for Wii U ports, great lineup of Nintendo published games there.

Following the responses to posts in this thread (sorry for not being quicker replies it was late in the day when making the OP)

The title of the thread should have changed by now for all so hopefully it'll be more clearer.

As for people asking for proof to some of my points - this was mainly just through observations in the various Switch threads (and in other forums) so figured it'd be good to see if it'd be a good point of discussion.

:)

As someone who loves handheld gaming and Japanese games...I still don't see the Switch becoming my main console lol. It's just missing and going to miss too many games. Making a perfect secondary platform though is a Nintendo tradition at this point.

It's a good secondary platform as it has a relatively unique but small lineup & functionality (and is generally lacking in the areas that usually dictate a primary platform).
A typical Nintendo console in other words.

Nintendo machines are usually my mains, slightly less so with the Wii U, but the handheld form has guaranteed Switch being the primary.

This kind of observations would make you think every Platinum game is a multi million seller or everybody out there think Uncharted 4 is shit.

But what's been even more bizarre is the frequent number of posters amongst here or elsewhere who have stopped gaming on PS4, Xbone, etc. and started played exclusively on Switch. Why could that be?

I still believe this is a wrong observation.

Those who have invested in the Nintendo Switch (me included) has had good experiences with the few games it still has, but by no means has it taken over, replaced or become the primary gaming machine compared to PC or PS4. I haven't had the same observation, and would like to see examples of this.

I like it as my portable and love playing Zelda on it, but the third party support has been even weaker than on the Wii U which surprises me a bit. I'm very much of the opinion that this will end up as a great secondary platform for most people on here, while the casuals is a bit more of a tossup but I still believe PS4 would edge it out with families.

I don't know how that's even possible when there's so few games to play, and that's real talk. As an example my birthday's in a couple days and the wife wants to get me a couple games. I'm considering Yookah & Laylee and Prey. I'd grab Yookah on Switch, but it's still not out so I'll probably just pick it up on PC along with Prey which obviously isn't on Switch. If I decide to pass on Yookah there's a slew of other big games I'm considering (EDF, Onechanbara, Yakuza Zero, NI-Oh, Horizon...), none of which are available on Switch.

So to become a main platform? You've got to be joking. The GAF bubble isn't anything to go by.

Switch is my default console of choice now. I love that I can play something in handheld form while the kid is watching Disney Jr or my wife is watching one of her reality shows. I hate taking up the living room with video games. Botw was perfect for this. I would explore on the handheld and do boss fights on tv mode where I wanted a grander feel to it.

My PS4 and xbone time has severely diminished, now it's PC for third party AAA, switch for indies and Nintendo games, and then the other two for who knows what reason. The PS4 is basically my psvr box and my Xbox has really just been a glorified Apple TV at this point.

Its definitely the console I will use to buy all the indies, because of portability. Apart from that I'd say the main is still PS4 Pro, since it's got many more games at the moment. When JRPGs start to appear on Switch that situation may well change.

Heck no. I am going to assume the OP is being serious here. I have only turned my Switch on once in the last few months and that was for good luck during the E3 spotlight. I can not take any console seriously that I can not play my anticipated third party games (RDR 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Anthem, etc.) on. I will play a handful of Nintendo exclusives and I am glad so many people are enjoying their Switch but until Nintendo gets serious about their hardware and starts getting third party games that I actually want to play which is most likely not happening they will always be a distant third to me.

Personally speaking, it can't become my main platform console this gen because 1) I have no use case for handhelds
except when I'm on the shitter
, 2) I'm too much of a graphics whore, and 3) multiplayer with my friends is not happening on Nintendo systems.

I can definitely see it becoming a main console (at least in terms of sheer time played) for people who regularly use handheld systems - doubly so if they have a powerful gaming PC available.

Personal note, I haven't turned on my Switch since I finished Zelda.

I'm only there for the exclusives, so the next time will probably be with Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

And no, def not my main console. Sorry.

I can definitely see some casual gamers moving across to the Switch. Outside of that nope and definitely not core gamers, since the Switch isn't catered to that audience. Main console will always be XB1, especially PS4 for the majority, with the Switch to supplement them.

Nope. Not in the sense the majority who go to Sony/MS for big third party AAA or their main online fix are going to change.

The demographic for Switch like Wii I'm sure will be different. Nintendo fans, mobile gaming fans and as a second console to PS/MS consoles or console with PC.

Really nothing much changes except Nintendo should see much better sales from that demographic than they did with the Wii U.

It's still too under-powered and is going to get too little AAA third party support for much to change.

Not sure. Still love my PS4. But I gotta admit the portability is a killer feature for me and there are lots of great games coming that I am really looking forward to, so I keep coming back to my Switch pretty often atm.

how is it not? only aaa cinematic blockbusters count as core games?

If Switch was as powerful as PS4 and had third party support then sure. No reason to turn on the TV when you can sit in bed and play.

Casually walked by the console isle yesterday. Saw switch in there, looks good. Eyes glanced over the games pricing, 70€ for Zelda etc. No thank you, bye.

But it does look like a nice console.

It is for me as my main platform is the PC and the other consoles make far less sense as a secondary platform because of a) less appealing exclusives and b) lack of mobility.

This will probably be me in the future myself. As much as I enjoy the PS4 - the only games which are on the radar for me are Spider-Man and Shemnue 3.

I just discovered the origin of this gif and now I can't stop laughing.

When a game that I can enjoy single player comes out on it, then it definitely is my main console. If it were able to do multiplatform releases and the choice was between the PS4 and Switch version of such games, I'd go Switch all day. I can't afford the monopoly on the TV screen nor do I actually like it. Playing handheld "hadcore" games is where I enjoy gaming the most.

It's definitely a question of available games more than it is about the console itself. Looking at the August -> December releases, it'll see a lot more use from me than my PS4 simply because Mario+Rabbids looks interesting, Odyssey of course, and Xenoblade will be worth a shot of the exploration is half as good as the original. But right now? It's the MK8/Arms/PuyoPuyo versus match machine, played before I dive back into Horizon :/

I dont think so (but it is a question of personal taste, of course). Many games you can play on Pc4Box are not available on the Switch (and the other way around), besides Indies (I guess). I can see myself buying games for the switch just to play them outside of the house. But using it as a mainconsole? Not so much.

If it launched in any other year, it would have easily become my de facto main platform. I play very few western third-party AAA titles, and those that I do I play on PC. However, there was a glut of must-haves on PS4 this year after years of very little output I couldn't get on PC, so I have actually done a ton of PS4 gaming this year as well with Nioh, Nier, and Persona 5.

Tastes how do they work?

Obviously there will always be people main-ing the smaller consoles instead of the bigger ones, i'm a constant example, psp and Vita over the ps3 and now i'm just with the GPD Win, but that means nothing.

I guess we could talk of vocal minority.

From my observations the Switch seems like a very popular console over here at GAF, if this site indeed represented the majority of the gaming market then the Switch would be a worldwide phenomenon that was changing lifes left and right.

Yeah, GAF is far from representative of the mass market.

I loved my vita when it came out for the same reasons people love their switch. I was just part of the niche that like what it did. At the time I really appreciated what it could do as I was due to have my son so when he was born it came in very handy as a method to play games when I had a bit of time. Once my son got a bit older and the Vita had basically died I moved back to my console on the TV.

The switch is a cool console. If it got all the 3rd party software as well then those who want off TV play would surly start using it as their main machine. But that need is not so huge in the west as it may be in somewhere like Japan. People like playing on their huge TV's. Especially the younger generation who have this set up in their bedroom.

First year excitement for a new Nintendo system is standard at this point. Judging from the rampant requesting of Wii U ports from the Switch fans on gaf you'd wonder how many of them are loyal Nintendo fans and how many are tech enthusiasts on an early adopter kick.

For me it's a secondary system to PS4 and always will be. I love Nintendo's big first party exclusives but their 3rd party support, lack of power, pricing structure, lowly populated online community and lack of a trophy system makes it an easy decision for where I'll be playing games released on both.

For me in 2017 definately. The second half of 2017 doesnt look as good for my PS4, no games that will compete with Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, XC2, Mario+Rabbids for me.

2018 is up for grabs, but looking good for my PS4. Nintendo needs to deliver some great games for it to compete with that lineup.

My main console is always the one I play on the most with.

2017 it's the Switch.
2016 it was my PS4
2015 it was dead even between my PS4 and Wii U
2014 it was Wii U
2013 was a dead year. Didnt play anything because of a total lackluster software lineup for the Wii U and the Twins.

Without Netflix?
Lol no

hehe..still intrigues me that this is such an important app for so many on gaming consoles :P

I can't see a situation in which Switch will ever be my main console, but that's fine. I knew that before I got it. PS4 is destined to be my main console just because of the range and quantity of games available on it.

Switch will be a secondary machine for me, which I likely buy a half a dozen exclusive on a year, and that's totally ok with me when the exclusives are as good as Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart. Metroid etc

That said, the second half of 2017 arguably looks stronger for Switch than PS4 for me personally.

70 million people bought the 3ds and wii u not caring about third party support. Why wouldnt "many" of that combined audience do the same with Switch? It's the only option for the many nintendo only gamers.

Not even close. I'm a fan of the Switch but it doesn't have anywhere near the amount of games coming out on it that the PS4 does at this point.

Not for me, but I never expected it too when I bought it so it's not an issue at all. I just have way too many games on PS4 and PC to play vs. the fairly limited library of the Switch for the latter to become my main console.

Just my opinion, but if it is to be successful for many years, and appeal to the mass market. Then it absolutely does.

Nintendo consoles thrive on the gimmick and strong first party support. The Switch has a GREAT gimmick that has it flying off of shelves and so far the first party support has been incredible.

Biggest learning point for you OP, when in an echo chamber, assume that everything you observe is exactly how it is in the real world.

Nah, but I expect it to finally be a worthy GC successor, meaning mediocre as a main console, but thanks to great first party and a few but excellent exvlusive third party games brilliant as an addition to a PS4/5 Xbox.

I'd say so far the third party support has been worse than the WiiU. The WiiU launched with 23 retail games andhad many AAA third party games out in its launch window. Here we've only seen indies so far. Capcom and EA have shunned the system. Activision as well. Ubisoft are trying as usual, I'll give them that, but no AAA ports this time. Not a lot of big Japanese third party games on the horizon either.

I haven't touched my PS4 since Persona 5 so I guess....yeah? I've been using the Switch pretty much every day and I'm still in a bit of a backlog with it. 25 games now with Mario Kart 8 and ARMS being played frequently. Going back to Zelda when the DLC hits in 4 days. Puyo Puyo Tetris is also wonderful.

well it is to be expected that after the desaster that was the U, third parties are even more reluctant to develop anything for a Nintendo system. But since the Switch is off to a good start that might change. But I still don't expect anything above GC levels tbh, which would be perfectly fine for me. I'm used to owning multiple consoles..and they're really not that expensive if you think about it(especially in a day and age where people spend double that money on smartphones they replace every 2 years)
