Is The Last of Us overrated?

Do you feel the same for members of a sect that blindly follow their leader? What about the kids raised in a sectarian movement, they are brainwashed from birth, they depend on the movement for their ressources, their loved ones are most likely in there as well, are they any less responsible? the dogs could run away too.

Or SS in the second world war?

So on and so forth, we are not so different compared to other animals. Dogs certainly act as ass holes toward other animals all the time, no need for a master to be around, they hunt for fun, they bully each others... etc. Their master only make them suited to live in society, assuming they were not trained to attack.

Either way, intent is not the issue here, the idea is to move into the future without dying.
i think every human with a functional brain can still choose his actions, trained dog are literally killer machines without sentiments because they don't have our same perception of good and evil or the ability to reconnaise a bad man from an innocent child, they kill at command.

even the most brainwashed man (still in the limit of realistic brainwashing, so no mind control or scifi stuff) can tell the difference between a grown man and a defenceless child even if they don't care about killing them.

it's a complicated discussion, i give you that.
like i said, killing animals with realistic violent details and sound effects is kinda of a novelty, not many games have this stuff so people get more emotional (at least some people).

I love the game, but it gets more points for narrative, world building and its technical chops than it does for its gameplay. I don't think the gameplay is bad though. It's fun and has a good sense of tension, but the way the ai can interact both with your crew and in general is laughable at times. But still, great game.

But, in the end, I love it for what it is. It's not crème de la crème on my list of all-time favorites, but it *is* on the list.

I have played TLOU only recently and although in the beginning game was difficult to me I keept playing it until I have learned survival strategies. I think combat in TLOU is really fun but you have to learn how to use your weapons and environment to your advantage, becase then each enemy encounter requires strategy and looks a little bit different. Also graphics in TLOU is still good considering it's age and with amazing story on top of that it's probably the best PS3 game I have ever played. Of course not everyone must share the same opinion, so if you think TLOU is boring I can understand you.

It was not the first game to have high quality cinematics and a serious story. Eg few years before TLOU there was LA Noire that had also very good reviews while earlier Mgs4 provided its own unique story, which had its roots in mgs3, though fans were split on it. Then there was also Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls

But for various internal and external reasons only tlou stayed. Probably post-apocalyptic World with mutants is easier to enjoy. There were also similar movies on cinema back then and aaa American video game industry is tied to and supported by hollywood
-Or- it really is a good piece of gaming

Its a very good game but i was disappointed when i played it.
I read so many personal reviews from people stating it was so amazing

It is probably my fault that it did not meet my expectations due to my obvious hype before playing.
I would give it a good 8/10

The dlc however was really really good, i would go as far as saying that was a 10.

Saying all that i do look forward to the sequel.

Gameplay - meh. graphics - decent but not nearly as great as some like to claim. Ellie - meh to annoying.

Although a lot of people like to rag on the story or call it cliche, I really liked it and found it to be above average especially for ND. Maybe not so much the plot but the way it was told and I loved Joel. He made up for putting up with Ellie. Joel and the story kept me engaged and made the game enjoyable.

Is it over-rated? Oh hell yeah, but to me so is RDR2, MGSV, UC4, BotW and even TW3. The last game that got a really high score and as much hype that I agree with is FO3.

For me it's good game and the only game besides HZD that I really enjoyed when I had a PS4

Naughty Dog has a history of good to great games, and the last of us world is unique to them, it's not my favorite Naughty Dog but a lot of people feel its the best game of all time.

Frankly, I have nothing against it. The story telling, characters and visuals are outstanding.

Gameplay? Not much. I feel like you spend 90% of your entire game slowly crawling.

I love the gameplay. It opens up environments and let's you tackle things how you want. Every encounter feels significant as you conserve resources and scavenge for supplies and craft mid battle. Playing on survivor is the best way to play

I thought TLOU was a really excellent game. The mechanics were tied to the story and lore very tightly - to the point where ND took all that talk about "ludonarrative dissonance" to heart and wanted to build a game with both totally in sync. The only flaw was when the AI partner just walked in front of a zombie and nothing changed. I also liked how understated the crafting/upgrade system was and, again, how it tied directly to the story.

And the whole infection/disease struck me as very logical, more so than in other zombie stuff I've seen. The locations were really interesting and the progression of time was well done. I have nothing against TLOU, it's a 9/10 game in my book.

joel was by far the best character in the game, simple but brutal and effective.

Although I didn't connect with it as deeply as many.... I felt it did do great things for dialogue and story telling in games.

Some people are complaining that the 'story was disappointing' but this wasn't meant to be some M Night Shyamalan type thing that set out to defy your expectations or subvert the viewer... that is cheap compared to a well told story.

The start was amazing and deeply impactful and the end was tense and unrelenting.
Other highlights for me were the two brothers and leading up to winter and just after winter starts.

The University part for me, it felt to drag and I didn't like the repetition of crate puzzles. Also the clickers just seemed to walk towards me no matter how slow or careful I was moving, which annoyed me...

Anyway, I think it deserves to be in the 90's as much as any other game in that territory, like Breath of the Wild or The Witcher 3.... all have issues and can be criticized but that doesn't mean that they didn't add something greatly needed or brought an aspect of gaming to a new level of excellence...

I'd rather play GOW myself, as the tone, gameplay and world suit my tastes but I really don't gravitate towards horror or zombie games as a genre.... but the quality is unquestionable.

Honestly I thought it was a good/great game but not revolutionary whatsoever. The characters and story telling were the best part IMO. I remember them praising the combat and stealth mechanics and honestly they were pretty damn linear. I think I noticed it about half way through the game, and a lot of the hype was wearing off.

Never quite understood the whole OMG reaction to be quite honest. I felt like the hype was misplaced. So, yeah, I guess I do think it's overrated. I mean, people talk about it like it's something that changed video games, and I don't think it did at all. It was just a good game. But to each their own!

I wasn't hyped about the second one, but figured I'd check it out at some point.

i literally don't care about fallout 3 and halo reach :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

The story exceeded my expectations, especially when compared to other shallow zombie games or the far more over-hyped, boring-ass UC4.

Yeah, it was another zombie game but I think it was told so well and there were some really great and moving moments (if you can get past the early parts without killing the oh so annoying Ellie). Sure, there are a lot of games that have better stories, but for me at least, it was definitely above average for a video game narrative.

Yep, The Last of Us is overrated. Story was decent, good graphics but gameplay was okish... it's not the great work of art some claim it to be.

All in all it's a good game, nothing more.

I found the game incredibly boring and the story is unoriginal, however, the attention to detail and acting were superb. That being said the art and locations were very well done.

Normally i would pop in with a "Any popular game i dont care for is overrated."

but the thing about TLoU is, aside from a hugely impressive opening, the gameplay is fucking boring. Felt like if you took the combat of uncharted (ps3 versions specifically) and took a watered down item management system from Resident Evil, a spice of occaisonal interesting set pieces. I got about halfway into the game before i stopped.

its certainly not the worst TPS ive played, but i find it more in the middle if not slightly below average. And i have very little interest in TLoU2 because of that.

The first two hours were so awful I can't believe I actually went back and finished the game, but when I did I started to like it. Turned out to be a good game with fantastic pacing, but outside of that not great and definitely overrated. I'm not hopeful of the sequel, the lead developer from what I've seen doesn't care about gameplay and wants to make 'intellectual/artistic' game but I not only don't think gaming is the medium for that but druckman just doesn't have that kind of ability. Then again so do most of the hacks that get jobs in hollywood.

I'll be getting the sequel, just not at full price. Mostly out of curiosity and for the multiplayer.

I am going with NO, its not an overrated game. Universally praised TWICE. Is it the greatest thing since sliced bread? No. (that Internet Porn) but damn is it a good game. And the sequel looks amazing and one of my highly anticipated games this year.

So you never played TLOU huh there's a lot of gameplay and it's cheap now you should buy it

Tried to complete it but while it actually was quite good the slow gameplay eventually made me drop off and play something else instead.

Should complete it, but it's like 3 years ago since I played it and it's just too much to go through everything again to keep up with the story

Sure ;)

Yes, when some people say it's their best game ever or in last 20 something years, yea, it's way overrated when you talk like that. It's game created in Uncharted mould but apocalyptic and more grounded. It isn't breaking any new barriers to be honest. Story is by far strongest part of the game, especially ending. Certainly must-play for any gamer but its fantastic MP shouldn't be overlooked, spent 10 times more time on that than on SP.

So, overall, is it a tad overrated, yes, I think it is.

Im just waiting for this game to be realesed on *insert your favourite platform* so everyone can agree finally that is an incredible game.

its just not possible that you played Last of Us and weren't captivated by the incredible gameplay

And there we have it, sonygaf in all its majesty. Where we go crazy over a white controller and call everyone who doesn't get captivated by Sonys games a liar.

I think it would be better without human fight encounters. Who wants to have firefights in a Survival Horror game? That and I really don't like how Ellie can just run past everything and be invulnerable (also Boy from Daed of war is like this too) as it makes escorting her fairly pointless gameplay wise and ruins immersion.

They could've made a tense survival horror game about protecting the only immune person on earth from mushroom Zombies but because of focus testing they made a middle of the road, easy to digest, 3rd person shooter featuring Zombies. There's just not much tension in the gameplay.

But hey lesbianz tho 10/10

I was using stealth only in the beginning. On normal difficulty I had many weapons and ammo later on, so I started killing everyone on my way. My favorite weapon in this game was brick or bottle (throwing weapons) + pipe (melee weapons), because if you hit enemy with a bottle you can then instakill almost everyone with a melee weapon (no shiv required). Unlike weapon ammo there's a lot of bottles and bricks in this game, so that strategy works great.

I see you're a man of culture. Those are my favorite weapons as well, make things a lot easier.

Another thing that I don't like is this "shiv" mechanic. Whats the deal about it? Feels like this weapons(not actually weapon though) it treated as a god item. I feel like there should be more opportunities to deal with zombies and open things other than just using a shiv.

I hope they unlock harder difficulties from the start and don't make you play through the sequel multiple times to unlock them all.

Another letdown. Although, honestly I was more looking to the trophies.

The DLC is arguably better than anything in the original retail version, too.

DLC was amazing as was the opening 15 minutes because there was no combat. It is hard to have a well written game when you have to shove 300 murders in between every cutscene.

My favourite bits were things like Ellie reading jokes or encountering a giraffe or Joel getting a watch as a gift. The actual gameplay was a depressing slog. 2 looks like they are doubling down on violence and grit, and not making it something like the DLC, so I'll be passing.

But if it turns out that 2 is like the dlc, and there is only like one hour of combat, I'm in 100%.
