Is The Last of Us overrated?

Couple hours in on my first play through I met Bill and now Runners and the combat is getting real old real fast. I'm just brute forcing my way through now that they can see me and just start running immediately. But it's quickly becoming less and less fun the longer this goes on and the more zombies they throw at me. No more strategy or hiding. Just kill the zombies to see the next cutscene. Gonna be hard to push through tbh.

Thanks for the tip lol I were right I started using shotgun and suddenly every fight I wound up with a bunch of shotgun shells to replenish my cache hah.

Unfortunately I'll just say it's not for me and leave it unfinished. I shotgun blasted zombies for a good while because stealth got way way harder to do and would be shooting then someone comes out of frame and kills me. Over and over I did this until I brute forced my way to the Bloater. I noped out and deleted the game after that unfun bullet sponge.

Good game nowhere near GOAT

I gave up on it on Saturday. I just stopped caring. The story is a mess. Combat is fun, but very repetitive. Graphics are nice and I appreciate all of the options, including the gameplay modifiers Naughty Dog provided, but I'm done.

I got Horizon Zero Dawn coming today which is also highly acclaimed but I see has far more an emphasis on the game aspect. So little time so many games I want to give this one a shot.

I don't hate TLOU but I gave it 5 or 6 hours of my life and had enough.

please, just don't play the game at less than very hard-ultra hard, you are gonna thank me later.

ultra hard is the right choice:lollipop_sunglasses: the combat really shines and you are forced to use all the tools, the armours, the elemental weakness and the upgrade system.

True ultra hard

I don't own a PS4 anymore so I haven't played part 2 (don't play to either atm). From the perspective of 1. I'd say so. It was carried heavily by its story, the shooting/survival mechanics/level design were all inferior to other games out at the time, what allowed it to be cherished was the relatable characters and great writing. I'd argue last gen it wasn't as hard to find good stories in games like it is nowadays. So while it was definitely in a tier above most games, I'd never compare to the franchises like MGS, Mario, GTA, etc... which have true universal acclaim in my opinion.

Around Bill you have mostly zombie to fight against. It can be done stealthily with the knife and the bow. Try the game in a lower difficulty maybe ?
i played it in hard and could do that part of the game with stealth . The clikers ( the zombies with the head completely not human looking and that you can't strangle) do not see . You can just walk past them slowly . But I can understand if you moved on . I did the same when I got the game in PS3, but for different reasons.

It's a great balance of stealth shooter and horror gameplay, combed with an amazing presentation. The story, music, cutscenes, dialog and acting do carry it moreso than the gameplay.

Still my favourite game from last gen.
Sure, there are games that do better at individual parts, but nothing exceeds the whole experience.

Although I might have to rank MGS4 better as a whole.

I know many people will not like this but most of the games from Sony's first-party studios are way overrated and this comes from someone who owns PS4 Pro and PC. Spider-Man and Bloodborne (which isn't from Sony studio anyway) are the only two exclusives I really enjoyed.

And now, for the most controversial part of this post, God of War is probably one of the most overrated games to come out on PS4.

A good story, great visually but with weak and uninspired game play. Like Uncharted games. I enjoy playing them for the story and the spectacle but for actually good game play I prefer something else.

To some people it might be a perfect experience. To others not.

Just like any other game thats considered a perfect game. Half LIfe 2, Zelda, Mario Galaxy etc

Nothing is perfect in reality but that doesnt mean 10/10 shouldn't exist. If you dont like the score, change it to a 9 in your brain.

10/10 means perfect to the reviewer, not perfect in creation and science and all the universal constructs

I consider the first game a masterpiece, especially its storytelling. Gameplay wasn't something innovative but it was still very good and very interesting. Which btw is why I'm so bitter they butchered the second game.

FTFY

If it is, is not by much. Is one of the greatest series of the last twenty years. In terms of storytelling, theres nothing like it.

The first definitely wasn't. It's an amazing game and an all time Playstation classic.

The sequel is overrated trash. The only good thing it has going for it is the graphics. Story is awful and the gameplay is nothing exciting. I was hoping for some improvements but it's basically just the same old Naughty Dog crap. It wasn't bad but they've just not done anything with it all these years later. The controls in particular are really bad and the animations look janky af at times.

I'm just gonna pretend the sequel doesn't exist. I used to laugh at people not wanting a sequel but they were right. I can't blame Sony for giving this the green light after how much of a success the original was but unfortunately Naughty Dog have lost their touch. I refuse to buy any more of their games until Druckmann has moved on.

How this got perfect scores is beyond me. Can only assume reviewers have been paid and/or are too scared to criticise it.
You not liking it doesn't make it trash

It's just not for you. I don't think it's perfect but it's great and it's unlike anything in gaming

good game, just wasn't as good as Uncharted 2 or even the best game that year IMO

Druckman has a hard time making the combat seem...diversified. same problem in uncharted 4. seems like it's like...okay cutscene/set piece is over. now....clickers! or cutscene/set piece is over now....stealth! he doesn't know how to mask incoming encounters, or know how to make them seemless so that you don't see the next encounter coming from a mile away. Uncharted 2 for example, did this extremely well for the majority of the game (until the 3rd act).

The bigger a game is in terms of expectations, sales, reputation, etc the more people will tear it apart.

Same with PS5 threads (variable clock and size). You see those pop up way more than any negative xbox thread.

The July xbox event and Halo threads should spawn some good ones.

Considering the sales of part 2 absolutely not. The game is a juggernaut and the second one is a juggernaut as well.

Now is it the best game EVER? Probably not, but it's one of those must-experience games for sure.

2 improves on 1's gameplay in EVERY single aspect. More varied encounters, more intricate levels, smoother movement, much more satisfying melee combat & stealth. 1 is downright clunky by today's standards.

As others have pointed out, 1 is carried by its narrative. I wouldn't recommend it to people if they don't care about story. The characters make the game.

Funny to point to huge sales as evidence it's not overrated when it's actually evidence of the opposite. There far are better games out there that don't get the sales. If it was underrated it wouldn't have massive sales. It being this all consuming juggernaut is part of why it is overrated.

Its like saying Taylor Swift isn't overrated because she sells a ton of albums. Like lol that is why she is overrated

Playing the remaster of the first one...got to the winter section with Ellie and I'm starting to get bored a bit, it's pretty long...Set up is nice and story goes along quite well, but then you start to see the...uncharted-ism of the whole gameplay.

-I knew exactly when a fight/stealth section was going to start once i see the "covers" around the whole map and even if nothing was happening, all the bricks and bottles were a dead giveaway that shit was coming
-Way too many times the cover system failed: sometimes enemies would just walk past me, other times they spotted me way before they turned the corner and the stealth kill was really just a coin toss
-Speaking of stealth kill, right at the first infected encounter, 100% of the time, the first runner would spot me right as i was approaching him from behind...the only way to kill him stealthly was to approach him from behind...in another room during his patrol...don't know if it was a bug or anything but their perception is very random...and it happened other times as well
-Success stealth 90% of a section, then a random enemy spawns on the floor above yours, notices a body and puts everybody on high alert...the fuck?
-Was...the Henry/Sam section really necessary in the grand scheme of things? I mean, obviously having interactions with other people is good and all, but they're forgotten as quickly as they're introduced and aside from a "shit happens, sad, but deal with it and keep moving foward" message, it was just pointless...they already delivered that message with tess...it would have been cool to have a longer session with tommy and maria
-Joel should have died before winter...before arriving to the university and while they're there, joel could have teach ellie more survival skills, bonding more and such, then BAM, dead, she goes to the fireflies alone, do some shit, run away and settles with tommy.....less impactful than the original plot? probably yes, but right now my feelings are mixed

I didn't finish the game yet, so my opinions can change, but for now I'm not impressed...it's a good game definitely and i see why it was praised so much but....eeeeeeeeeh, i guess not being my favorite type of games, it doesn't click with me as much as the others

I had low expectations for the first TLOU, thought it would be overrated, but when i played it ended up being one of my favourite games ever. The game is pretty much perfect.

TLOU 2 an amazing sequel, i finished at Friday night and i cannot stop thinking about the game. I'm playing TLOU Remastered multiplayer to fill the void left by TLOU2.

I'm hyped for Ghost of Tsushima, but not nearly as i was for TLOU 2. I am more hyped for Cyberpunk 2077. looks like it's a game that has the potential to make me fully immersed.

From a gameplay perspective, it might be. I get strong Uncharted vibes. Even in the first game, it just felt like I was playing a more serious Uncharted. The stealth, gun play, melee all feel like the Uncharted series.

To me though, Last of Us is story, atmosphere, camera work, graphics, sound design, etc. In that regards, it's second to none. Despite some of the hate part 2 is getting, they feel like reading good books to me and that's something that rarely happens in the video game world.

I haven't played 2, but taking away the story in 1, for me anyway, there's not a lot to the game. It's like a 7? Every time I hear about this series it's always about the story and characters. I'm down for a good story in games too (I really liked TWD S1) but the characters and story didn't hit me at all in TLOU1. So for me I guess yeah overrated?

Its already sold 4 Million copies... so no

I think that might be riding on the reputation of the first game though, along with all the shilling that's been going on.

But that wasn't the original question.
