Is the PlayStation 3 on its prime?

5 Years ago, the PS3 was launched at $599. Many refused to gave in.

With the 360 starting to dominate NA and UK with the 1 year lead, the PS3 went below Sony's expectation to gain grounds like the PS2 did. Then the Wii took Japan and the rest of the world easily.

3 Years later the PlayStation 3 Slim was released, its like a rebranding of the PS3. More importantly was the $299 price and the release of great exclusives.

Together with the new ad campaign for the PS3, sales went up. But still lagging behind the 360 and Wii.

A year later, the Jailbreak was introduced via a USB Stick to allow unsigned code. Then the private key was compromised so that theres no need for the USB Stick. Then here comes Geohot. Then the infamous PSN Outage.

Alot of folks said that the PS3 will never recover and it is compromised wide-open. Then Sony took its time and patched it up. They even handled the Outage fairly since most users came back.

And here we are now, with the release of shit load of exclusives every month, the PS3 is closing in the 360.

57.6M vs 55.5M (as of September 2011)

It's only a matter of time before the PS3 took it's glorious 1st place in the HD Console Market (yeah lol Wii can't be beat, but its not HD! :P)

So.. the question are:

Is the PS3 on its Prime now ?

Will it gain more next year and out ?
Or will it start to slow down ?

Is 2012 finally the year of the PS3?
joking here of course lol

Well, isn't it the most-sold console worldwide in 2011?

I'd want a $199 PS3 with an updated slim design to be even smaller than what it is right now.

Obviously PS4 may arrive before then..

If you've never owned one, sure. No time like the end of a generation to jump in and have dozens of AAA games to play for dirt cheap.

However, if by "in its prime" you mean "AAAs ahoy", no. There isn't jack squat coming out for any of the current consoles next year, because the next generation is almost here. 2012, like 2005, is an "interim" year. Thank god for ToR.

For PS3 owners, it's been a year chock-full of quality exclusives. I don't think any of the games are great, except maybe Little Big Planet 2, but the most of the PS3-only retail games have certainly been good. Add in the all of the wonderful multiplatform games, and it's been a very good year to own a PS3.

Oddly enough, it's also been the year that I've played my PS3 the least.

Why should I care how much money Sony lost?

The fact of the matter is that the console has really come into its own and has offered a ton of great games the past few years.
I find this such a cop-out argument, every other thread gets into the money debate while this is some sacred non-issue here.

Because its nice to have some metric to measure success and in business (which videogames are) profitability is the most important thing

That makes sense, my mind was totally boggled by the language in this post.

Perhaps some day you will learn that english is not the native language of everyone on the internet (which I would assume is the case here)

Maybe..but that's not saying much.

As long as it has no SMT games I won't buy one and will play the few exclusives (Ni No Kuni, Yakuza and Demon's Soul) when the PS4 comes out and hopefully has BC.

Gimme Persona 5 and I'll buy your ugly console Sony.

It's gloating time! My console is justified!

Lost billions, but it's all good.

What does the financial situation of Sony Corp got to do with the quality of games and experience on a console?

MS have lost billions in getting to the place they are now with their console, are the games or experience any less due to this?

Some people really try to hard!

To answer the OP, yes the PS3 is in its prime ........ decent price, great features and some excellent exclusives, I am glad I own one.

I must not be a gamer then because I tend to care about the profitability of products I like so that I may keep enjoying them.

Sony is certainly not making as much money as nintendo. But It certainly did not affect how many games they put out, or the level of support they give the system.

I still only buy just PS3 exclusives for the system. The 360 is still my console of choice for multiplat games, not to mention XBL type content.

For some reason, MOST PS3 exclusives just didn't hit home with me. They are missing something I can't put my finger on. The best PS3 exclusive to this day for me was UC2.

While other threads, focused on gamers, still get into the money discussion. Fine, this is some sacred thread where discussion isn't permissible.

The 'discussion' as you put it has nothing to do with the OP.

Simple as that, all it really comes across as is some rather basic attempt at trolling.

PS3 has The Last Guardian, Twisted Metal, Star Hawk, Tales of Graces F, Ninokuni, Final Fantasy vs XIII, Sorcery, Sly 4, Yakuza Dead Souls, Atelier Memuru, Journey ... (that's just the exclusives)

Did you not know, it supposedly has no games.

smh.

Ha, I'm trolling just because I said something that is fact. Dunno, these discussion happen in other threads fine without somebody called a troll. Dunno why people are so up arm on this, seems people are making my statement something bigger and "they do give a shit".

Gaming platforms still in their prime:
- Xbox 360 - Hit its prime when Modern Warfare came out
- PlayStation 3 - Hit its prime when Uncharted 2 came out
- iOS

That's about it.

Oh really? I'm the "cop-out"?

There are a ton of great games for the PS3.

"B-b-but it lost BILLIONS in its first few years!"

Who gives a shit.

I know what you mean. But I tend to pay passing attention to Sony's profitability purely because I'd like them to remain in that market. I'd hope that'd concern most gamers (again in passing).

But let's stick to the thread (as little as I think of it!).

Whether it is fact or not (obviously Sony have lost huge sums of money) it still has nothing to do with the question in the op ' Is the Playstation 3 on its prime?'

I would probably buy a second PS3 if this happens. I'm still using my 40GB model and it's going strong, but I'm a sucker for sleek redesigns.

Yep, some good stuff right there. But it's a little like 2005, still. Team Ico game, David Jaffe game.

I wonder if the God of War team is doing PS3 or PS4 projects, but I'm pretty sure Guerilla and Naughty Dog and probably Evolution Studios are all over PS4 dev kits right now. Sony need these titles at launch or in the same time frame.

Sony will probably have a new Santa Monica title out next fall and the PS4 will launch late 2013, if MS decides to move out the nextBox next fall.

Hey, atleast I tried to add something to the discussion about sales. This much backlash is kind of weird.
